| Young Players you thought would be good but left on 10:27 - Jul 26 by rkc123 | That Irish left back we had in about 2010? O'Connor or something like that? I think he had been in the Liverpool youth system, and he had one or two games where I remember he looked really promising. |
He was brilliant in the Leicester snow game!

But Dobs was the last straw, for me, in regards to relying on our academy to get us out of the doldrums. Went from possible Premiership move to Naional League freebie very quickly.

Was in the Mexico world cup squad until withdrawing through injury, so not doing too badly.

Actually did well at Man City, highly rated until a series of injuries intervened, barely playing for 3-4 years as a result. Must have been mentally tough so good to see him having some success at Cambridge.

Yeah I remember him. Got his autograph when he was getting off the team bus at one of either West Brom or Birm.

Canada World Cup squad, not Mexico, although he had won friendly caps with them previously. Suffering the injury literally the day after the squad had been confirmed.

| Young Players you thought would be good but left on 10:22 - Jul 26 by ParisBlue | Tony Vaughan, the next Terry Butcher. To be fair we got a decent price, but the delay in the tribunal cost us buying Kevin Phillips who went to Sunderland instead. David Johnson arrived a couple of months later. TWTD (almost 30 years ago now...) |
That was going to be my suggestion, an all round disappointment with him leaving and us not getting KP over the line!

A real shame for him and Canada, I think he'd have had something to offer that squad!

No way. That’s Bishop’s full appearances after he left us? Wow, that’s a real surprise. I obviously didn’t follow his progress, but I’d have put money on him carving out a solid Championship career. Dean McDonald. Loads of hype moving from Arsenal. A few promising appearances and then disappeared into the ether.

Cheers for that- remarkable, isn’t it? Don’t think I’ve ever seen a player so commonly used, complete so few full 90 minutes.

There was a full back called Seb Dunbar who always looked the part in academy games but he didn’t really make it which surprised me at the time. Hyam was around the same age group and by comparison I was amazed at the career he had as thought he was bang average all through the year groups. Shows what I know. Slightly different but I thought Bowditch would play at a much higher level than he did. Matt Bloomfield had a very decent career but again I think he could have played higher.

Interesting you picked those two out, as Carson was dating Dunbar’s sister for a good wedge of his time here- anyone that ever saw Carson on an evening in Ipswich can probably understand why his career never took off…

I think it was partly as a 15/16 year old he was such a unit he was far more physical than others he age but of course they caught up and also injuries poor lad.

He was supremely talented as a youngster. Got some really unfortunate injuries and crucial times, and lacked physicality. Hell of a finisher though.

Agreed - does show how we tend to over-rate our home grown products.
