Reading the wording on the official site, it seems like Ashton offered the contract so could well be that it was a club offer rather than a manager offer and GON didn't have plans.

| Wes Departure Confirmed on 18:01 - Aug 6 with 1427 views | DJR | 30 goals and 30 assists in 164 appearances is some going. Without his coming back around the turn of the year, I don't think we would have been promoted last season. | | | |

It doesn’t read like that at all
| Wes Departure Confirmed on 18:12 - Aug 6 with 1282 views | Westover | Good luck to our legend, with Chappers also in the Leicester side we will probably have to like them 🤔 well a little bit 😂. | | | |
| Wes Departure Confirmed on 18:14 - Aug 6 with 1263 views | JammyDodgerrr | Really sad to see him go, but equally Leicester are crazy to offer him a three year deal so I'm glad we didn't stand in his way. | |

| Wes Departure Confirmed on 18:20 - Aug 6 with 1224 views | BloomBlue | A wonderful rock to everything we've achieved recently. Delighted that he did at least play some minutes in the PL, he deserved that. I had already assigned myself to him leaving Town so was pleased when he signed a new contract but always thought with the squad changes it was going to be difficult for him to play many minutes. I'm guessing he decided at this stage in his career playing was more important than training and playing 15 / 20 mins here and there. That tells me everything about the person as I'm sure he will be taking a wage cut. Thanks Wes, you will be talked about in the same way people like me talk about the players from the 60s/70s/80s | | | |

| Wes Departure Confirmed on 18:21 - Aug 6 with 1224 views | skinnybob72 | Sad to see another one of ‘that team’ leave. Unfortunately we’re moving towards a faceless cast of thousands model for the PL where characters are replaced by a more robotic type of player. | | | |
| Wes Departure Confirmed on 18:30 - Aug 6 with 1163 views | itfcsuth | Forever a legend of the football club. A magnificent footballer, an ultimate professional and remarkable person. Has been front and centre of the past 5 years, and has delivered so much. Truly wish him all the very best in the future, and will forever be welcome at Portman Road. | | | |

Why ? We had the best out of Wes and Chaplin. They aren’t getting any younger, hence we move on. No room for sentimentality in football or you get left behind.

I'm of an age that I remember being devastated when the 81/82 were dismantled player by player. So I've seen a few come and go. The likes of Chaplin and Burns will always have a special place in my heart but time and progress catches up with everyone. I still think it's pretty amazing that after back to back promotions, a relegation and another promotion, we still have players on our books from the League One days.

| Wes Departure Confirmed on 19:30 - Aug 6 with 850 views | DanTheMan | I think out of that special group of players, he was my favourite. For no good reason that I can think of. This sucks, but I'm glad he got himself a nice deal at the end of his career. Hopefully we'll see him back in some form in the future. | |
