Parking fines 15:05 - Aug 20 with 1917 viewsZapatasMoustache

Here's a good one. Every morning I drop my son off at the station to catch his train to school. Most afternoons I pick him up, unless he's feeling particularly energetic. I've just got back from holiday and found a stack of PCNs dating back months claiming I've parked in Ipswich drop off car park from 7.30 to 4.30 without paying on many occasions. I'm sure this will be appealed successfully, but staggering that such a shoddy system - where my corresponding exits/entries must be there on the same camera feed - just churns out fines and passes on info to debt collection agencies. Numpties.

I guess on the days that he is feeling energetic and you don't make the return trip, they just presume you entered the car park but never left.

The appeal process for private parking fines is very opaque these days, so make sure you get everything organised. The "court process" is nothing more than a paperwork exercise due to the fast tracking through a dedicated court. Good luck.

Weirdly I got no fines for those days. They could have cleaned up!

It’s a horrendous system. An exploitative, punitive and generally scummy system run by cowboy operators and couldn’t-care-less landowners.

It should be open-and-shut, but never trust private parking firms to accept obvious evidence such as this.

If you have any trouble convincing them, I'd recommend the forum at www.ftla.uk/private-parking-tickets. They're absolutely fantastic at this sort of thing, and will be able to guide you with precisely what to say etc.,

This has happened in some Tesco’s and McDonalds, seen it in the news, someone used say Tesco one morning, then again on the way home from work, got a fine for being in there all day. Like you say it’s a rubbish system. Think the same happened at Cardinal Park in Ipswich.

I just ignore private parking fines, know it’s not for everyone as some worry more than others, but they’re vultures most of the time.

My Mrs had this recently. Went to a gym class on Thursday evening, then again on Saturday morning and they tried to give here a parking fine despite her using the car in between the 2 gym sessions.

Ridiculous system. I can’t stand private parking in this country - it’s a total farce.

Happened to my daughter, oop North at Asda.
Popped in on the way home from work and then again the next morning.
The system assumed she was there all night.
She appealed successfully.

Ignoring is generally considered outdated advice now - it's pretty much a one-way ticket to a CCJ.

The main experts here recommend engaging with them, even if only to show that you're not an easy mark who won't turn up to court, and let them have a default judgment.

A friend successfully appealed a PCN with a letter saying something whilst they are the registered keeper of the vehicle, you are not willing to, nor under any obligation to, disclose who was driving.

I should stress they got this from some forum about PCNs from private operators, and that you need to find that and get the wording spot on.

The law says that if you do that they can go after the registered keeper.

Take it to the Ipswich Star, they love that sort of thing. Practice pulling a really sad face for the camera.

Also they have to notify you within 14 days of each incident.

There is a minimum "no return" time limit on most supermarket car parks (although I would imagine most people's working day would far exceed that limit).

What evidence would be sufficient? Dashcams? Witnesses? Receipts for parking elsewhere?

Happened to my sister. Went to Tesco before and after work and got a fine assuming she had been there all day.

This is what I'm wondering, in case the appeals fail. I'm sure I will have evidence of having done a 'big shop' (i.e. one that needs the car, but that's not definitive) for some of those days, plus maybe an after-school care worker would say they saw me pick my daughter up (but did they see the car?!). Most days I'm working from home though, and without dash cams or some sort of google tracker (which some people have used to get out of these) I might be stuck. Let's see.
