Embolo signing for Atlanta (Daily Record) 11:09 - Aug 21 with 6231 viewsNorthSuffolk

Haven’t seen it reported anywhere else, but Daily Record transfer news has just updated this morning saying Embolo is now close to Atlanta move.

Hoping this is because we’ve opted for another target rather than him rejecting us. Or that the report isn’t true.

Enciso as the 9?????? Really?

Not his primary position, he's more of a 10 or 2nd striker but he has played through the middle in the 9.

I think we'll certainly favour a more physical 9 in the Emersonn / Embolo / Delap mould, but I think Enciso gives us an option.

Ultimately the point is Hirst was always leaving. I don't think him going before we've signed a replacement is particularly problematic, he wouldn't have featured anyway.

What gives you confidence we'll get another number 9 through the door? We've failed to sign the requisite number in every summer transfer window since Gamechanger came in.
[Post edited 21 Aug 11:45]

Because we're clearly a lot better at getting suitable signings in now, whether that's because our recruitment team is better, or we're just a more attractive proposition now. We're also clearly not afraid to splash the cash.

I think saying "we're never good at getting number 9s in because last year and two years ago and three years ago" is a bit like saying we never win at Bolton* because three years ago and five years ago and twelve years ago" - there's no real specific relevance when things have changed a window or two down the line.

* No idea if Bolton is a pertinent example

I think I would struggle a bit with the decision-making if we brought e.g. Ueda and Palacios in close to the deadline.

If we get all our business done early, it gives us a massive advantage in terms of staying up, and if that means paying a few extra million I think it's definitely worth it. People turning up for training first time in early September when we don't know what shape they're going to be in and how they are going to fit into the 11 could easily be the difference in a few close games in the first half of the season.

That might be a bit naive, but there are obviously lots of players who were available for earlier transfers, because we've done a lot of our business in a good time - so if Leverkusen or Rennes want to go down to the wire, then I think we would be better to walk away and find someone else, rather than doggedly pursuing the same target, knowing that our biggest signings aren't going to be properly ready to go until October.

I think we'll see Enciso playing the 9 role a few times this season. Probably more often as a 10 but think he's someone who can play anywhere in attack. Might be more of a withdrawn 9 or false 9 but definitely an option in my humble opinion.

Indeed. Having a flexible approach suggests that playing with a false 9 against certain opponents might well be the way to go.

I know what you are saying but Hirst looked OK last time up top when we did have striker injuries. We were right to make sure we got some money coming in rather than keep loaning out players.

To his credit he did do OK for us, but it was in the context of a side that was well short. I've got a lot of respect for his contribution at Town but the fact he's gone to Stoke probably tells the story of where his level is. If we were relying on Hirst this season we're in a world of trouble.

I think tomorrow he'll go with Emersonn, with Akpom among the subs. Possibly the same at OT. I'm pretty confident we'll have another option by the time the window closes and Liverpool come to town.

If Emersonn or Akpom or both get injured or niggles, then not having a third striker will be a huge mistake as we know Hirst can do the job, if not perhaps at the desired level currently.

Enciso is not a 9 in the PL. He's just not.

I worry we might look desperate now.

I think it was on talking town they were talking to a journalist who has seen him play for his last two clubs, he said he was better in a team playing two up front and he played just behind, he said he was a good player but not prolific and from what he said I don't think he thought he would suit Ipswich.

I'm very confident we will.

We have to sign 3 very very good players to get us up to the level required. If we don't then the investment made so far this window has been a waste of time, IMO. I am sure the owners are very aware of this and will have given MA every chance to accomplish it.

Or the info is simply out-of-date/recycled. After all, he was "close to moving to Atlanta" some days ago, before our interest surfaced.

I don’t think a Scottish tabloid talking about international transfers would be the most reliable. This part of their site (transfer feed) is mainly click bait anyhow.

Although I did think I saw something late last night on X that suggested Atlanta were still hopeful.

I share those concerns. Seems like every summer we struggle to get striker/s in, and then have to loan someone in January.

That’s a little unfair as every club is looking for strikers, and the window doesn’t shut for another 10 days, but still.

We need another couple of players, striker, midfielder and maybe centre half to take us to the next level. The team as it stands is good, but isn’t good enough to keep us up.

We were decent at getting suitable signings in at a lower level every summer - except for a number nine. Every season we've chased in January because we failed in August. I think recruitment failure is different to on pitch "bogey" teams, which I agree makes no sense when saying we don't ever win at X, Y or Z, especially when there's a clear pattern of our approaches and subsequent lack of request.

But there is over a week left so hopefully we'll succeed. I'll be disappointed if out options heading into September are Emmerson and Akpom plus, where required, Enciso, who is a better number ten.

Definitely disagree on this. Theres 10 days left of the window, you don’t move onto lesser players just because it could run late into the deadline. If you have an opportunity to get high calibre players, you get them whenever you can, not move on with such little time left as it is

Me too, I just don't know if our interest was real. If we wanted him we could match what Atlanta offered surely given the fee is a record for them and one of the highest in MLS. Surely he would want PL football and a chance to get a bigger move than play for a team already bottom of their MLS conference.
