Thought Flemming deal was agreed ages ago anyway?

Context is Sunday and getting ripped apart- 3/4 defenders from 2 years ago is not going to cut it.

Or the previous weekend when they weren't.

You are hard to please.

Three number 9s, a World Cup winner, Encisco, Fatawu, Maeda, Diop …

It just doesn't tally with what MA has said about the owners pushing the club to go to the limits. Why aren't they questioning why we're not using the loan spots that would only require salaries covering? Surely we'd want to cover as many bases as possible...

We can only assume that we've been knocked back by quite a number of targets. I guess we shouldn't forget Kipre, but like Greaves IMHO he's inconsistent at best. I'm personally not (yet) convinced by Outtara either. There appears to have been an overload on midfield, and personally I think Mehmeti's been treated badly - we'll see, he's not yet gone out the door. And not signing a striker means we're paying over the odds for Flemming, leaving us short of cash to spend elsewhere.

Does the loan window not stay open later ?

That stopped being a thing years ago (except for youths and goalkeepers under specific circumstances).

We've had a great window but only one signing at centre-back is gross negligence to me. Both can be true!

You think recruitment haven’t bothered looking or trying?

Does that mean that we're robbing Peter to pay Paul a little when it comes to contracts etc.,?

I appreciate that, to a degree, we need to pay what we need to pay in order to get good players through the door. But does that then jeopardise us a little further down the road, when players end up on decent contracts that they won't get elsewhere, and decide that they'd rather stay at PR and 'fight for their place', despite probably not ending up in the 25-man squad?

We’re probably finding that some of the players we want to move on have had significant increases in their contracts due to being promoted.

I can see the challenge there. Mehmeti as a case in point.

Decent player, signed for a very good fee, but only really there in order to secure promotion. You get him in, he helps secure promotion, and then you can't shift him because of the promotion increase.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, and I'm not sure what the alternative is.

Taylor I think would have gone to Birmingham but is a couple of weeks away from full fitness. Wonder if someone might still come in for Mehmeti late on, but has had the feeling that the only ones out would be Humphreys, Ogbene and Mendel.

Bloated squad with a lot of them not close to playing anytime soon, going to need a few more windows of PL to fully recycle, I guess.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Is irrelevant as someone still needs to move on to make spot available in the squad.

Not convincing players to move on or selling players at a cheaper price could end up to be quite costly!

I think it's a bit risky to not sign any other defenders than Diop though, For sure an international market there, as Sunderland proved last year and even Hull this summer to some extent.

I understand why some are frustrated about our lack of depth in defence especially, I think it is worth keeping in mind that we have already made 13 signings, to get to a point where we are happy with the depth in every position we would have to go full Demolition Man again. Having said that, there are zero excuses if we don't get another striker.

Not sure we'll be as reactive as determining our transfer strategy off the back of 1 game away at Man United. At least I hope not.

Gross negligence

I would agree with the original poster.

An injury to O'Shea or Diop and we're having to play Kipre... he's looked even more lumbering in possession in pre-season than last season. He's so not a PL defender.

I mocked Coventry for signing Ethan Pinnock a couple of weeks ago. I didn't realise we'd not even look to improve our cover options.

Unfortunately, seems from another thread that Ramazani is a winger, not cf.

Tension back up again then :(

We’ve had a good window but I’m not sure you can call it amazing if we end up with 6 centre mids and 3 number 10a, while only having 1 left back, 1 left footed centre back and 1 proper right back (plus Outtara who nobody actually knows where his best position is).

It’s incredibly unbalanced

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

It's not even a question of overall quality, if O'Neil persists with playing 3 CBs, bringing in Kipre would leave no CB on the bench.

Strawman fallacy in full swing

It’s not automatically a strawman just because someone draws an implication from your words or challenges your framing.

When you call it “gross negligence”, it reads like you’re accusing recruitment of a serious failure of duty and potentially that they didn’t do enough work to bring in another centre-back. However the fact we’ve only signed one centre-back doesn’t, by itself, prove they “haven’t bothered” or “haven’t tried”; it only tells us the outcome.

They could have tried and failed, been priced out, had targets choose other clubs, or prioritised other areas.

So the stronger point isn’t “strawman”, it’s that the claim about lack of effort isn’t evidenced by the signings alone.

Were people really expecting us to flip a full 25 man squad in 1 window?

I'm no Kipre lover by any stretch but we've spent £15m on Ouattara, that could free O'Shea up centrally. It's equally true that an injury to Scherpen and Walton is starting. An injury to Fatawu and McAteer starts. An injury to Enciso and we're relying on Egeli. I'm not sure they're any less concerning, more in some instances IMO.

Isn't that just the reality of being a newly promoted side? We've got versatility, we've had a good window, and we've made a decent start to the season. Lets attack the next 17 games and see where we are in Jan.
