Early days but he looks a runner to me. Not a huge amount of skill, ability to beat a man. Would be surprised if he gets 5 goals for us this season.

That run and shot in behind vs United was brilliant. With Ronald Araújo playing deep as a defacto CB it made it tricky to replicate that kind of threat.
| Clarke to start against Palace? on 10:28 - Sep 5 with 2197 views | Guthrum | I'd say Clarke offers most coming on later in the game, when his harrying and ability to get shots away can improve our results. He has the aggressive intent, but not the pace of Maeda to catch still reasonably fresh defenders on the hop. | |

| Clarke to start against Palace? on 10:36 - Sep 5 with 2142 views | pointofblue | For me, it's tike to switch a back three - Ouattara for Maeda, Nunez for Fatawu and Flemming for Emmerson. Start with two tens but, if we're struggling defensively, Nunez can drop back into central midfield. | |

To be fair to Maeda, he was not going to get any joy out of Ronald Araujo. Though a CB, Barcelona routinely used him as RB to stifle Vini Jr in el clasico games and it invariably worked well.

Whether that’s the case or not, I’ve still not seen anything in the games so far to suggest he has the skill level to beat someone through technical ability, pace and getting in behind I agree he can do that and do it and we need different types of players but I’ve not seen enough from him yet to say to me he’s a premier league level player. And before anyone says I’m writing him off I’m not, he may well come good and I hope he does. [Post edited 5 Sep 10:58]

You are not going to see that Dav, he is not a technical winger like that .. It's not his game to beat 2/3 men and whip it in the top corner. He's a second striker type winger, he's going to want to combine and run in behind, to be the second or third man in the box at the back post. Watch the highlights of the first two games back ... that is the type of player he is.

Would that be in a 3-5-1-1 formation then?

| Clarke to start against Palace? on 15:12 - Sep 5 with 1764 views | Nutkins_Return | No chance. Clarke is an off the bench man and Maeda will be a big part of Clarke playing/looking better when he comes on. Maeda is relentless up and down. May bit have excited people last night but a big part in how we didn't ship a lot more. Clarke up against that Munoz would have been complete care crash. You just can't afford Clarke from the start against the best teams because out of possession he's very very poor. I thought Clarke was really positive and really good when he came on though. That's his role or at the least until Philogene is fully fit. If Clarke can impact though I would like to see Philogene given another go on the right in the same way coming in for Fatawu. | |

Maeda gone in behind multiple times against united. Running power and speed plus just making clever runs. Really good player. No he is not a tricks guy but he's very good. Absolutely brilliant out of possession. Everything we lack from Clarke in that regard. Maeda to be effective and do the tough grade. Clarke to take advantage and use his skill set last 20-30.

Did Clarke do that much last night? Thought he put one of our best openers straight out for a goal kick and ran into defenders a few times. Was ok on the ball.

More 3-4-2-1. Surprised at the number of down votes regarding the idea, to be honest.

Yeah all understood and I get his style. I think you need more than that to be an effective prem player. I hope he puts egg on my face!

His work rate is something else, he never stops. I'd also suggest we're not getting the best out of him with the Leif overload. Let Maeda do his thing like Fatawau and his quality will shine through.

You missed the run against Man Utd then when he got around the defender to the byline and crossed it into the middle. He did exactly what you've said you haven't seen him do.
| Clarke to start against Palace? on 08:15 - Sep 8 with 558 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | With a player like Maeda, you have to play to his strengths. He's a mobile, pressing forward with a pace threat in behind. It is early days and we do have to remember this is his first taste of PL football, but I wonder if he would be better off more centrally to bring out his strengths. Clarke is the opposite, he is more of a technical winger who likes to carry the ball, go 1v1, take more risks etc. The issue is, he does lose the ball a lot for me and then the play is turned over as an attack has broken down. But like I said, his game is about taking more risks with the ball. | |

I think Clarke has always been more effective as an impact sub as he comes into his own when there is more space & he can use his skill to beat a man. Maeda is more of a runner & worker so ore suited to the hurly-burly of the first hour.
