Will be interesting to see how they're compared to environmental groups who did the same and who mainly showed their faces. Were anti terror laws used against them in the end? Weren't there calls by certain sections on the right to run them over?

Let's wait and see.

is there a right to protest anonymously?

Interestingly, the Police and Crime Act 2026 does not apply to Scotland but the general position in England and Wales is that anything is permitted unless the common law or statute prevents it.

On the face covering provisions more generally, this is an interesting article but maybe only to a lawyer.

https://ukconstitutionallaw.or

"Protesters still have doubts over whether they can trust the police. Even before the advent of live face recognition technology, the police have consistently taken photographs and videos of peaceful protesters, including children. In one instance, the police admitted to sending the Department for Work and Pensions video footage of a disabled anti-fracking protester in an “apparent attempt to have their disability benefits removed.” The nature of this pervasive surveillance was fully exposed in the case of 94-year-old seasoned anti-war campaigner Mr Catt, who had discovered the police had 66 record entries of his attendance of protests. The common law provides the police the power to obtain and store information gathered from surveillance for policing purposes, including the maintenance of public order. In Mr Catt’s case, evidence of his peaceful, anti-war views ended up on the National Special Brand Intelligence System (known as the “Extremism database”)."

interesting, but that's the police abusing the law rather than the law itself

also a massive difference between one or two people wearing face coverings and the entire march. can only imagine it would be to stop their outing as violent criminals and domestic abusers as has been the case with recent, similar marches.

So your problem is with immigration in general then, not the legality of the means.

The UK is ~36th most densely populated country in the world, so there's definitely room for more people.

And no, I'm not sure where you've got that from.

Maybe we could take some on in favour of those here who are net drains on our society, you know, like pensioners who drain the NHS.

It's okay folks! I'm just doing a hilarious extremist views 'bit' which everyone will weirdly put up with.

The possibility of abuse might well persuade me to wear a mask were I to go on a protest, but I still come back to the principle that one shouldn't be arrested for wearing a mask but should be for committing an offence, whether with or without a mask.

Having said that, I seem to be ploughing a lone furrow on this issue on TWTD, as I often seem to be.

Does Bentley need a 43 acre village green? Could easily give up half for some new housing for asylum seekers.

With our increased life expectancy, are you up for banning people having children then? It's just that your mob were talking about heavier taxes for childless people not long ago, so it doesn't feel like they think we're full...?

I don't think that's what Stokers is getting at. It's more that certain individuals are quickly on here when someone from the left does something wrong (i.e. we saw a lot of it when Corbyn was Labour leader) and then seem to drag their feet to comment when it's someone on the right. Well that's the perception anyway. It's not quite as much as you and Ryorry are suggesting. Some posters seem, shall we say, a little unbalanced in what they want to talk about.

I think with Farage and Reform, especially, there's a lot of distraction and hoping things blow over, much like Trump's America.

As it gets more awkward and embarrassing for some of the less extreme right wingers to comment on the latest antics of F*r*ge, Lowegrade, etc, they stay away more than they might otherwise have done.

Even now we have people campaigning for him and saying he didn't/doesn't mean the things he posts.

I understand you are keeping a level view of all protests, whilst I am being blinded slightly by the approach taken by, usually, far right protests where people so often want to air a grievance but not put their name to it. I wish I could be a little more balanced with the subject, but I am conscious, just with yesterday, how disruptive it was to the people of Dover and, more importantly, how it's partial intention was to intimidate and isolate a segment of our society.

I understand where you are coming from, and share your intense dislike of the far right.

It's just that measures against far right protests can equally be taken against protests I might support. Antifa protesters, for example, often wear masks. And don't forget the Guy Fawkes masks worn during the Anonymous protests.

I’d rather we didn’t have thousands of males coming into the country illegally at all tbh.

Yes I know it’s s much of the last Governments fault as it is Labours.

Why does that worry me ? Why shouldn’t it?

We don’t have thousands of males coming in illegally. It’s not illegal to claim asylum. Only if and when any application has been refused and they overstay their welcome (or came here undetected and haven’t claimed asylum) do they become illegal.

You may even have encountered some refugees when the NHS recently saved your life. It’s very likely non-UK borne people would have been involved even if not former refugees. Does that not make you stop and think that the attacks on migrants in the UK may not be ok?

Given they were all masked, all in black and are a self identified army, could a case be made for this being their uniform, which would be explicitly banned under the UK Public Order Act 1936? Which was passed in response to uniformed fascists on our streets coincidentally enough!

Actually socialism is driving the population increase. Capitalism can survive without it - as was the UK model pretty much up to the Blair years - the idea being the growth comes from 1) making us individually better off (until we printed billions of QE) 2) it’s a global economy. Though I accept the Tories most likely aimed to also keep wages down by creating such an unlimited labour pool (and no doubt the same for Reform, look at the donators).

What CAN’T survive without significant population growth is the state pension, which requires ever more tax payers to cover an increasing number of retirees. It’s the ultimate Ponzi scheme.

Other than that I avoided this thread as it’s another that just turned into another one of personal attacks and arguing!*

*Edit - so much so, I forgot what the thread was about!!
