| Palace game a must not lose for me 06:28 - Sep 8 with 5098 views | Blue_Heath | I honestly don't think we'll get anything against Everton so we really need to win this one or at worst avoid defeat. Hoping that Flemming and/or Maeda will break their ducks this weekend. | |

| Palace game a must not lose for me on 10:06 - Sep 8 by baxterbasics | Palace and Everton both quite winnable. Doesn't mean we will win either, of course. But I'd say 4 points should be the realistic. However, if we fall short, I won't be throwing toys out the pram. |
We’re still going to be clear underdogs for both, so I wouldn’t call 4 points a particularly realistic expectation. More a ‘if we play out of our skins and they have off days we may get something out of the games’ type fixtures.

In my opinion that a tad overly negative. If we play for a full 90 minutes as we have for good periods in the Sunderland and ManU games, we can definitely beat either. It’s a big if, but definitely a possibility. Both are dangerous in attack, so we also can’t ‘lapse’.

| Agreed on 08:45 - Sep 8 by Dyland | You have to wonder where points will come from if you aren't looking for ones against Palace. Early days of course, and Palace may finish 8th for all I know. But it will be disappointing to get nowt in the next two, and all too reminiscent of two years ago when for me it was the games (albeit at home) against the same two opposition when I thought ah sh1te, we just can't compete properly in this league. Sure, if we play well, compete well, and are unlucky it's a slightly different story... but back to point... then where will the points come from? Us being spawny? Think there've been some bizarre reactions to the United and Liverpool games though. |
I think our home form will be key to staying up. To win away against PL sides that have been up a while is so damn difficult. Target home games against the likes of Palace, Fulham, Bournemouth etc. as must not lose and hopefully pick up the odd wins way to keep us up.

| Palace game a must not lose for me on 12:22 - Sep 8 by Billywitch | I honestly think this is one of the most naive things that is said on here, especially considering the league we are currently operating in. Lets be honest, there isn't 105 points to play for, there are games that we simply aren't getting anything out of, no matter how hard we try/well we play. Palace, with no disrespect to them because they are what we should aim to be, are a team where we can aim to take some points, and if we don't, that's a huge negative for us in terms of the seasons final points tally. |
It's obviously tongue in cheek and nothing about what you've written makes the palace game a "must win" I completely agree we should aim to beat them. But we're not relegated now if we don't.
| Palace game a must not lose for me on 07:38 - Sep 9 with 1369 views | Bluemike31 | Seven points from every batch of Six games is the minimum target to survive, with that in mind we need Four from these up coming Three games, matters not where they come from, we just need to get them. For me I can see Three at home to Fulham and a point at palace, job done. | | | |

Probably more like just over 6 but the point is it doesn't have to be so formulaic. There may be the odd time we get two wins on the bounce or 4 games unbeaten with a couple of wins and some we lose 4 in a row. Any talk before Christmas (unless we have completed Imploded) of must win is counter productive. We know a lot of games are important but not do or die. Reality is if we lose against Palace and win at Everton then we are on 6 point through 5 games and we probably go up a place or 2.

| Palace game a must not lose for me on 09:37 - Sep 9 with 1296 views | Blue_Uprising | https://theanalyst.com/article Posting in the other thread some interesting data behind past performance. To be fair to the OP the title says must not lose not must win which seems to be the phrase being repeated. A strong start definitely a strong indicator of survival for promoted teams. And picking up points in the fancied games a must whenever and wherever you can - rather than hoping for jam tomorrow. | | | |
| Palace game a must not lose for me on 11:09 - Sep 9 with 1255 views | gordon | Our business was pretty decent, but the gap between a lower-mid Prem team and a newly promoted team these days is still going to be massive - we under-estimated the difference last time, think Coventry are probably under-estimating the difference this time. Players like Wharton, Timber, Pino, Sarr and Mateta are in and around the best international teams in the world. We've potentially got Palacios in that kind of league if he settles in, and maybe Enciso too, but with our back-line of O'Shea, Greaves, Diop and Davis we're going to struggle to keep clean-sheets / pick up points away from home a lot of the time. We've definitely got a chance, but talk of expecting 4 points from the next 2 games, or saying this is must-win is a bit over the top. We need to turn over quite a few teams at home, like we did against Sunderland, and then we need to pick up a few lucky points / surprise wins away to bolster that, and they could come anywhere, really. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

FWIW I personally believe that Coventry failing to beat Hull at home last week was the moment they were relegated this season. Two games in, wild i know. But this league is unforgiving

Home form will be key. 7 home wins gives you a really good base to work from. Our big problem in 24/25 was we only won once at home and picked up 7 points which was dire! Away from home we actually did alright generally.

Yes definitely. Home form is key. Win 7, as you say, draw a few, you're up to 25 points. I hope for the away games we get a bit tighter and not so open as against man Utd. Obviously still want a threat, but the midfield did look open at time.

| Palace game a must not lose for me on 06:58 - Sep 8 by Backtoblue78A | They'll be buoyed after scoring three at Fulham and Selhurst Park has a way of intimidating us into sitting back. Hopefully GON gets it right defensively and at least gives us a chance for someone like Clarke to play on the break. Would bite your hand off for a 0-0 at this stage to get that points tally one higher before the break. #COYB |
You must be delighted with the win. Surprised to see you not saying anything other than criticising Scherpen. 6 points from 4 games is a good start, isn't it?

I've said it before, but people need to have higher expectations and greater ambition this season. Games like yesterday ARE must not lose games if you are aiming to survive, or better. It doesn't make sense to me to think otherwise. [Post edited 13 Sep 17:22]

Yes indeed, any bonus points against the better sides welcome but it's what we do against those outside top8 that counts.

I don't get those statements at all. If we have higher ambitions than simply staying up, we will be getting plenty of points against other teams meaning that any individual match is far from a must not lose. Or are you saying that if Man City etc lose to Palace away they will be relegated? No team is relegated (or even wins the league) due to one result alone. It is about how they do over the course of the season that determines it.

It's about a lot of things, last time in the prem we were as good as relegated by end of October having failed to win a game. Momentum for one, consistently getting points on the board, Palace and Sunderland two tough but beatable teams and to get two wins here is a real confidence booster, especially for the defence that got destroyed in 2024-25. Palace were there for the taking with no Mateta/Saar new manager etc and you have to take advantage of these situations. These are the games that count anything we can get against top 8 is a bonus in my book. International break coming up soon, the players/fans/manager will be in a much better place if we are mid table rather than lets say Cov. I could go on but we must be more ambitious this year. We were founder members of the prem and we are long overdue a sustained run in this league such as the likes of Bournemouth, Brentford, Fulham etc. Last year I got accused of being negative and when I am positive I still get criticised, you can't win on here lol.

None of that makes an individual game a must win or a must not lose.
