I think Scherpen is a great keeper 16:18 - Sep 12 with 3003 viewsMullet

Or at least has all the tools to be one, but his kicking is so off. Either we adjust our tactics or we give him extra work to do outside of training.

Can't go through 30 odd games with so many giveaways unforced.

What ever you do, don't post that on the site. It seems quite a few want him hung, drawn and slaughtered, and you'd probably get the same treatment! There always has to be a scapegoat, even if you do well. He's the next one off that particular conveyor belt. He should have a word with Aro Muric and Kasey McAteer, they'll tell him what he's got to look forward to.

He really should have saved both goals today. Needs to use his feet more. Too static and by the time he has dived to save it, the ball has already sailed past him into the net. OK at 6ft 9” he ain’t going to be the most mobile of goalkeepers but he is slow to get down. It’s almost like he dives a second or two too late!

I dont think he's " at fault", as in making mistakes. But he just doesn't seem to save shots I'm expecting him to save... Liverpool game, and again today, im left thinking, "Why the hell didnt he get that"?

Thought he had an ok game today. Don’t blame Nike for either goal and no one’s mentioned the crosses and corners he dealt with well.

He was mid dive as the first one arced further off the deflection, so I’ve no idea what you’re talking about here

Mick mills says….i know he is a legend but he’s been notoriously critical and fixated on certain players for a long time.

Just quoting his opinion doesn’t add much when you’re denying a fact that the first was deflected so he’d already dived etc

We’ve had a great win and still people are being Monday and hyperbolic instead of rational

No idea why this has been downvoted because you're spot on. Allow me to correct the downvote.

The hyperbole is off the scale and starting to take the shine off a fantastic win.

For the umpteenth time, Scherpen was not at fault for either goal. Really wish those would give the bloke a break.

Heard their equaliser on Radio Suffolk and listening to Mick Mills thought he had made an absolute howler. Having now watched the highlights I’m absolutely baffled, its an excellent finish from Strand Larsen

As for the first, mental to think he was at fault

And I say this as someone who thought he was at fault for both against Liverpool

I think he has all the tools, and agree his distribution has been really poor. It's a big step up and sure he'll be able calm his nerves and sort that out.

Neither goal today was down to him, a deflection and a perfectly placed shot. Diop perhaps had to put Strand Larson off his stride but the finish was pretty perfect.

I think he gives corner takers a headache, pretty sure many will go near post. Don't know if that Palace corner second half that went straight out was a mishit or frustration at not knowing what to do against a tall keeper

Important thing for me is we give him time to settle and if that comes with a few hiccups then sobeit. We know what Walton's like, he has his own foibles, perfectly fine as cover but no more than that in the PL.

Probably just needs a solid game or two and more experience/ understanding with the defence. Bit more patience required.

Mick Mills says Scherpen should have reached the first. Said second wasn't hit hard and again saveable. I think the Liv 1st near post hand-height was an easier save than either of the ones today, but I think most Prem keepers save at least one of those. Let's say we're up to four now:
1. Utd 5th: off his line, didn't get there, lobbed.
2. Liv 1st: near post hand-height. Through his hands.
3. Liv 2nd: Off his line, no-mans-land.
4. One or other of the two goals today was reachable

Warnings signs were also there vs Rayo Vallecano pre-season too. We've conceded second most in Prem and nearly half those goals are GK errors. I think GK position has gone backwards since last season.

Frankly, Mick Mills regularly talks total sh1te. I know he’s a town legend, but it’s remarkable he’s kept that job.

He has not been good so far. I dont think that is at all extreme to say. He looks extremely vulnerable to low shots, his kicking is atrocious and im not sure the defenders look confident in him.

We won so happy days but he was not good today, was nearly at fault for a goal when he simply gifted it to Wharton under no pressure at all. He needs to improve, fast.

Genuinely can’t believe this is some people’s assessment - appreciate you’re not alone in it, I do feel he could have done better with the two Liverpool goals, but everything else feels like a form of hyper criticism that just isn’t fair or based in reality.

The man was top of the premier league saves chart before the game, to put that into context, last time we were in the premier league, our goalkeeper was top of the ‘errors directly leading to goals’ chart lol

I try not to compare keepers to Muric if I can, bless him.

He certainly has good aspects to his game, a couple of big claims today to relieve pressure. Im also not in the camp he should be dropped or we should write him off. Walton is a solid keeper but he becomes better when he's not in the team.

I think he has some pretty blatant areas to improve though. His kicking short and long is inviting a lot of pressure, whether its a shank off the pitch or a pass to a defenders weak foot its really not great. Im also not sure on his saves down low, a lot of his good saves this season have been at areas I would expect a keeper to make, but the low ones I personally think he looks fairly susceptible to.

Can you link some clips of Premier League keepers saving low driven shots into the corner of the net? I would like to see what sort of standard some are expecting from our keeper.

I'm confident the passing and communication will improve with time. He generally commanded his box well other than the one chance that fell to Khalili, so it's not all bad.

The shot stopping worries me though. I think the median Premier League goalkeeper saves every single one of the last four goals we've conceded.

Mate, every shot that Scherpen has faced this season he would parry anyway. Basic keeper.

His height may be a disadvantage when analysing him.... he probably suffers from the fact that he gets closer to great finishes suggesting " he should do better" when other keepers get nowhere near them.
He does need to work on his positional play but his throws are very accurate in the main and when he kicks long its very long. He gets my full backing .
For the record Fatawu made the same mistake today as he did against Liverpool, today Palace were not good enough to take advantage, £125m Isaak gobbled up his chance. Not really seen much criticism of that which illustrates why keepers have it so tough, their errors and misjudgements are laid bare on the scoresheet when outfield players get away with quite a lot!
Stick with him guys and chsnt his nsme just like we did at OT when Nunez mucked up.

4 games in to a new season, in a league that's miles above what he was facing before

Sunderland - no one's quoting anything there

Man U - tbf we'd have conceded about 10 if it wasn't for him, and by the end lob, how well had the defence done to stop that situation?

Liverpool 1st goal - "hE sHoUlD hAvE sToPpEd It" - he did ridiculously well to get his hand anywhere near that excocet missile

Liverpool 2nd - not the best positioning, but Greaves I'd argue to be more at fault, but, yeaah, let's only blame the GK

Palace - a deflected shot when he had already dived and a great finish into the bottom corner.
On a 10/10 day he saves the 2nd but reluctantly give the striker credit

The cross flap - that could and should be improved on

Overall for first 4 games - has he "done a Muric" and cost us points? No

Do i feel comfortable with him in goal? Yes... for now

If he can learn from and improve then he's got potential to be great

Absolute nonsense.

In what world is it nonsense? Some fans just don’t seem to be willing to give any criticism. He looks sh!t. He can’t get down to any low shots, parries everything. Leif looked visibly annoyed after he flapped at the cross which they should’ve scored from after it went to 2-2. It’s blindingly obvious he isn’t good enough.

It's nonsense in the real world, not in your head. Happy to hear constructive criticism, but comments like "he can't get down to any low shots, parries everything" are laughable.

And the only sh!t I can see is what you are typing. That's blindingly obvious.

People seem desperate to make out to be the second coming of Muric. He had a shocker for both goals against Liverpool but I thought he was great today besides the pass out to Wharton.

He claimed a couple of balls that Walton wouldn’t even catch in his own dreams. Mad that people think Walton is a better option.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.
