I characterise it as the human race having to decide whether it wants to stay true to its roots as a cooperative social animal, or whether it wants to continue the ego-charge and split into smaller and smaller competing factions with more and more powerful weapons until... One way, let's call it 'socialism', holds out the possibility of a cooperative shared future, tuned down to fit into a functioning planet, the other, let's call it 'competitive hoarding', doesn't.

Imagine you wanting to frame the situation throughout Europe as a Muslim thing! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art https://www.theguardian.com/wo “The Portuguese social class that pays taxes, that which keeps this country going, is under attack and is losing its rights, notably its right to housing,” said Elena Costa, a 46-year-old social assistant. “So we are all here together to try to explain that we are suffocating.” Antonio Margado, a 52-year-old engineer, criticised the centre-right government for “a total liberalisation of rents; owners are protected more and more, while tenants who need a house are those who are protected less and less”. Neo Liberalism the rebrand of neo Conservatism is reaching it's natural conclusion. [Post edited 18 Oct 19:13]

If you think the violent, destructive riots currently going on in France and several other European countries are “student protests” about “classroom conditions” or “the cost of living”, you’re as stupid as the mainstream media thinks you are.

If you’re going to be critical of someone for believing the ‘mainstream media’ you should check your sources. You now regularly share tweets posted by far-right commentators and try to pass them off as legitimate. You simply amplify anti-immigration rhetoric that is all.

Did you bother to check any of these Tweets? The posts from Paul Amar have been widely criticised in France as having no supporting evidence, he only cites vague "sources". In fact the president of the CRIF has disputed the claim saying the looting and vandalism were widespread and don't seem to be targeted. The SPCJ have made a similar statement. I don't doubt that a number of Jewish shops were attacked and I don't doubt some deliberately targeted them but to try and make this into some Muslim-based conspiracy based on your echo chamber without more evidence than you've provided isn't helpful. Hopefully you have some more solid evidence to backup your posts in this thread rather than just claiming it's a MSM conspiracy. SB

Unfortunately there are a couple of posters who post from that account on here. Wasn't that long ago one posted a video claiming to be of the immigrants entering the Spanish enclaves which turned out to be a video of a completely different place from a few years back. If it suits the narrative that is enough for some to post and perpetuate it. SB

Limoge has been affected. A lovely place. My best friend is permanently moving about 25 miles away from there next month and I’m hoping to get over to see him and his wife sometime in the new year. Have visited a couple of times in the recent past and there has always been some protests or other going on though has always been relatively peaceful and calm until now.

You’re describing a structural problem with X. It’s full of propaganda, as that’s what Musk bought it for. People re-posting this sort of stuff may not even realise they’re recirculating propaganda and having their brains scrambled. It’s beyond time to get off X people. If the content wasn’t bad enough already, Musk restricting Ukraine’s access to Starlink last week that lead to more civilian deaths should at least focus minds.

Paris has riots every year, regular as clockwork. Due to dumb city planning, France has very little mixed neighbourhoods like we do in British cities. Those in the high-rise blocks of public housing in "banlieues", the poor areas in city outskirts, feel like they've been banished out of sight from the middle and upper-classes in central areas. Feel they've been ghettoised. What's different this year is the extra grievances: education spending and energy prices. Former can (and to extent already has) been fixed, but not much the French govt can do if Trump wants to start a dumb war and cut-off the world's energy. France is 116% in debt vs its GDP. That's the same level as brought down the Greek govt in 2010 to ward-off default. Its deficit is > 5%. Really worry that France is becoming ungovernable. France's bonds have increased > 1% in the past month, causing many extra billions of spending to service debt. Politics is heading for the extremes. Macron has tried to cut spending, but hands are tied by being outvoted in parliament (has no majority). Retirement age in France is a ludicrous 62. Tax levels are already at an eye-watering 44% of GDP. France has always had revolutionary politics & mass protests. It's on its 5th republic/constitution. The prescriptions of the hard-left and hard-right: more tax/spending, or shutting France off from immigrant labour in the face of an aging population, are unserious and will only exacerbate. Have to hope there's still a reasonable, moderate majority who'll be appalled by these horseshoe riots (by hard-left & hard-right) and burning cities, and will vote to bring France back to sanity in next election in six months. I don't hold much hope. [Post edited 19 Oct 9:34]

This is the headline in the Jerusalem Post. "Paris synagogue, several Jewish-affiliated sites vandalized on weekend, antisemitic motive unlikely" https://www.jpost.com/diaspora "In Marseille, several businesses sustained damage during Saturday's demonstrations, including some owned by Jewish individuals. However, there was no evidence indicating that the businesses had been singled out because of their owners' Jewish identities or that the damage was motivated by antisemitism."

Yes, you always have to make allowances with France due to them being 'a little bit feisty'. Coming second in a biggest garlic bulb contest is enough to kick off a riot over there and they do have a long-standing problem with anarchists. On the other hand, it's probably valid to question whether we're reaching a wider tipping point around dissatisfaction with the way things are in many countries. There are or have been situations like those currently in France all over the place this year. A quick search throws up the following significant mass demonstrations linked to cost of living pressures and failing public services (non-exhaustive list): Portugal - housing and wages Italy - inflation and economic insecurity Belgium - education and living costs Spain - housing affordability And beyond Europe: Kenya - Tax increases, food prices, inequality and corruption Pakistan, India and most of S Asia - significant protests against fuel shortages & costs Indonesia - Fuel-price increases and household costs Guatemala - Fuel prices and shortages Bolivia - Economic crisis, shortages, government policy Argentina - Cuts to public spending and university funding Turkey - Inflation and inadequate pensions Central to a lot of this is the rising cost of fuel largely as a result of the Iran war, although presumably the Ukraine war also comes into it too, and profiteering. It does seem that there's a lot of unrest around. There's a huge variety in socio-economic factors across all these countries though, so my 6th Form level analysis is unlikely to prove that what we're seeing is part of a wider geo-political shift against capitalism/neo-libralism or whatever we want to call it.

My 'always going to come to this' was referring to Banksy's underlying question really, rather than the specifics of these protests. Although ever-increasing inequality, irresponsibly aggressive capitalism and the extraordinary, childlike inability of the human race to be willing to recognise fundamental limits to what it can safely do will undoubtedly be significant contributory factors in these riots. Without finally acknowledging the inescapable underlying flaws in unchecked capitalism on a finite planet, and making fundamental changes to our entire base system of resource usage, all of the pissing about with sophisticated finance and politicking are just piss in the wind; a wind which will inevitably - completely obviously inevitably - turn into a super tornado. https://doughnuteconomics.org/

| Are we at a tipping point? on 10:23 - Oct 19 with 1342 views | giant_stow | The biggest shock to me isn't that the French are rioting - it's the apparent state of their school system. I say apparent, cos you never know if what you've read is true these days, but I've seen stuff like classes up to 40 kids, no TAs, teacher shortages and school days which finish at bludy 6pm (I'd riot over that last one). Seems like there's an obvious solution to the long school days / lack of teachers. Also weird to read that we're doing something better than a neighbour for a change. [Post edited 19 Oct 10:30]

Literally, I would say a vast majority does know it - you'd have to be pretty incapable of rational thought, or have been completely unexposed to decades of data and science not to have a handle on it - but somehow that vast majority fails to act where it has power or a democratic option. It's either a critical failure in human intellectual evolution, or a selfish stain on humanity, depending on how you look at it.
