Given the club are now in the Prem (for however long that might be) how do you locals feel about missing out? It’s a great way to boost the coffers and local economy and seems a bitter blow for the town and Suffolk generally.

Ashton being praised and then blamed here doesn’t reflect well either does it?

Only times I've felt remotely worried at night in Ipswich were when electing to walk up the pitch black footpath between Valley Road and the Grove at 3am sh6tfaced after a night at Liquid. People have become warped by the nonsense pumped online – and I agree, it's not an issue confined to Ipswich.
[Post edited 22 Oct 12:44]

Ipswich isn't perfect, not by any means, but there is a warped perception of what it is actually like.

Its a result of the same sort of online discourse that has some believe that London is a hellscape of sharia law and muggings.

I've lived in Ipswich for about 25 years, have worked in the town for longer than that, spend plenty of time in centre during the daytime and at night. Absolutely the town centre is struggling as a retail destination (as are many towns), and the demographic has changed, which may upset some, but I feel no more or less safe now than I ever have.

Edit: none of this is intended to dismiss genuine concerns some may have (just reflecting on tractorboy1978's post), but i feel a bit defensive about Ipswich as it comes in for a lot of unfair flak, and I see loads of positives here and know of plenty of people who work hard on helping to improve it. There is a certain type of keyboard warrior who just lives to snipe at Ipswich - i don't doubt every town has the same.

With respect though, that is simply your opinion as a man. To dismiss other people's feelings and lived experiences (particularly a womens) as being derived by being 'warped by the nonsense online' is rather disrespectful. My fiancee isn't even on social media and barely takes any notice of the news or politics and she feels this way.

Yes, that's my experience as a man and I think these matters are an entirely different situation for women so absolutely accept that element of your point. I don't think it takes away from the broader aspect of people being warped by misinformation.

Totally agree. I spent 25 years working in Covent Garden, living in North London for 18 of those, and have lived in Ipswich the last 15, and never thought anything of getting the last train back from London and walking home, or now, if I've been out to the pub in Ipswich, as well as having my office in the town centre.

The only things I've experienced that have made me felt unsafe were being in the location of IRA bombs exploding within a short while of me being there (The Sussex pub bombing - half an hour after I'd been there for lunch; Two x bombs in bins outside WH Smith in Wood Green at 9.30am, again, half an hour after I'd been in there before getting the tube; Missing the Piccadilly Line Russell Square bomb on the front carriage that I would've usually have been on every morning, except that morning as I had a dentist appointment.
The only other time was having my bag stolen as I'd fallen asleep around Camden way on the night bus back to Wood Green after a night out.

I feel no more or less safe now as I ever did back then. I just had to carry on with life, as I couldn't not go to work etc because of worry.

I guess there’s feeling unsafe and actually being unsafe.

The same has happened in Piccadilly gardens as an area that’s best avoided. It’s been run down online constantly by right wing bots and scaremongering- but it was always a place after 1am not to linger anyway.

Having lived in some of the roughest parts of Manchester long before cctv and ring cameras were much use, it’s probably easy to walk through Ipswich and dismiss people finding it intimidating but I guess it depends on your frame of reference.

It’s never phased me wandering anywhere but maybe the estates might simply as I’d get lost. I guess you’re hinting at the role of Reform again in this thread with their patriotic slagging off of everything and everyone?

Ipswich losing out on city of culture on 10:01 - Oct 22 by ITFC_Essex

As an outsider, who comes into Ipswich for gigs, and visits the Town on matchdays (and when we're celebrating), the one thing I have noticed is Ipswich's overall deterioration, the Town Centre gives Peterborough a run for its money in terms of looking like it's dying off and in places quite filthy, litter ridden and graffitied. In terms of the wider Town, going back 20 years, although Ipswich always had a few "rough spots" it was cleaner, safer and generally a nicer place to be/visit. After dark, certain areas of Ipswich are now very dodgy, you see a lot of crime/drug use just happily happening. No one seems to care, and thats sad. On top of that, the traffic system in places isn't fit for purpose, large spaces are now massively overdeveloped, even a lot of historic buildings and churches have been left to sort of rot, which doesn't scream culture, it screams dump town.

I'd say, if I were from Ipswich, i'd worry a lot more about that, and would be expecting my local Councils and MPs to be a lot more concerned about what Ipswich has become (and becoming) than losing the City of Culture thing, and if they aren't there lies to real problem. But if you are happy living like that, fair enough, but most people will simply avoid it rather than go there, which effects the local economy, which is what is happening already.

On the upside, I went to Haverhill this week and thats still worse than Ipswich in every way. I went to park up only to find a burned out car casually left there, no police tape, it's safe to say I parked at Tesco instead.

Absolutely spot on.

You stick with your town like you do your football club - even if the people running it make bad decisions and underfund it, or misspend some of the scarce funds it does have. Even in the dark Evans days there were a lot of talented, dedicated people keeping ITFC going in the background. It wouldn't be where it is now without that.

Ipswich as a town is the same. There is so much going on but too many people don't or can't see it. Just because you don't engage with it doesn't mean it isn't there and isn't massively important - especially in terms of creating a multi-use town centre that can thrive in the future. City of Culture would have been a huge help in making some of the best aspects of the town more visible and prominent.

Some of the problems are really hard to fix and it IS difficult to see past the litter and petty crime and neglected, empty buildings and unsafe-feeling side streets. All of those things do exist and are massively off-putting to visitors. But if you're only looking for the negatives, that's all you're going to see. Lots of people seem to have given up and are unwilling to engage with trying to make things better. But a lot of people are putting a lot of effort into creating something positive in the town - especially culturally.

As well as the visibility issue, the geography doesn't always help. The town centre is too spread out with like-minded venues too far apart and isolated. Prevents people from using the town like a destination to spend extended time in. It's the spaces between places that get neglected and need the real focus. The venues themselves, and the people running them, are great.

I think people are misunderstanding what the award means. Actually missing out on the shortlist shows Ipswich & Suffolk are actually hitting above their weight, in terms of what the town is doing and cultural impact. Its actually something to celebrate it means we are doing ok and dont need the 10million.

Basically the idea is the winner gets money to showcase their city culture through a regeneration fund that otherwise they wouldn't have been able to do because their cities or towns suffer from lack of economic opportunities. Ie the shortlist tends to be a list of some of the most deprived cities/towns in the UK who have something positive in their story on culture that they struggle to promote because theres no investment
.
Did you really want Ipswich to be crowned one of the most deprived cities/towns in the country?

Ipswichs big thing in their bid was the Waterfront, yet investment keeps going into and has done since it was initiated. If when all that kicked off 25 years ago Ipswich had bid and said weve got this industrial docks area but its key to our story and promotion of culture to the UK, region & town, theyd probably have won it or at least it would have landed more as a regeneration opportunity

Presenting the area now with its dance studio, bars, restaurants and regeneration of various bits thats happened its more like well youre doing ok with it, why do you need the 10million again ?

The waterfront is lovely now, I’ll give it that. But my wife, daughter and I spend a lot of time in Ipswich on non-football weekends for swimming, and they don’t feel safe walking through the town centre anymore. So in my opinion, anyone who says the town hasn’t changed for the worse is either not wanting to see it because it doesn’t fit their politics,or just not being honest. It’s changed dramatically in the last 10 years.

I didn’t know the actual numbers, so I had a look. Police data shows 389 crimes recorded around Ipswich town centre in June alone, with violence and sexual offences the biggest category at 142, that wasn’t an outlier month either, it averages around 374 a month. So people’s concerns are warranted, and the numbers back it up. It’s not people imagining things or getting worked up over stuff they’ve seen online.

It's not the quality of Ipswich one way the other - it was the quality of the bid itself. Bradford won it and as much as I like the place, it makes Ipswich look like Stockholm.

An interesting if rather depressing read. But the stats and charts also illustrate that the decline in most of our cities and towns is a national trend which in my view is the combination of two decades of “austerity” (aka cuts to local authorities), internet technology driving online retail and working from home, and a lack of public intervention to kick start local economies following COVID. Not to mention the energing impact of Brexit.

What it clearly isn’t is just “an Ipswich thing” or “an immigration thing” (growing up here, there were always the odd dodgy area and rough pubs).

Unfortunately several people on this thread (not you) just seem to relish piling in and making wholesale criticism of the town. Urban areas have always had a bit of an edge to them but there’s a combination of events that are making things a bit more challenging at the moment. We need constructive debate not slagging off our town.

People say this but I don’t understand why and perhaps I’m missing out.

I walk from the McDonald’s end when at the waterfront I pass a hotel, a pub, two or three places to eat and a a newsagents.

This is a serious question, what am I missing and how can what I am seeing be viewed as anything other than mundane?

Fair question. Maybe it depends a lot on the route. When my wife and daughter have a break between swimming sessions, any road from the pool into the town centre is the route they take. At any time of day there are always people loitering in groups, and when you've got a young girl with you, that's enough to make you feel uneasy, even if nothing actually happens. They won't walk into town later in the day or after dark at all now.

I'd agree the waterfront is fine.

You do seem to have selective eyesight….

Fundamentally, you seem to have not noticed the water, ie the old Wet Dock and the several hundred leisure craft moored there including the old Thames barge Victor. It seems like you’ve also not seen the Sherwood Dance House, home to Dance East and its cafe, and the Marinero Lounge opposite it. Well done for spotting the newsagents (I assume you mean Londis?). However there are not “two or three places to eat” - there are at least 10 places to eat (not even counting Cardinal Park which has 7, or nearby St Peter’s Street which has more than 15). There’s also Isaac’s which has numerous bars, and there are at least 2 wine bars. There’s also the Lord Nelson and the Thomas Wolsey very nearby. In terms of hotels, there’s the Salthouse, the Novotel, a Premier Inn and a Travelodge. And there’s a University and the Hold archives, which has exhibitions and another cafe.

There are also 4 medieval churches around the wet dock - two are arts/ music centres.

Was it really such a serious question after all?

No doubt that it could be and will be better (Clay 1 being built and the western gateway hopefully to be sorted soon).

Using absolute numbers rather than percentages, comparisons or trends doesn't really show anything.

Suffolk Police own numbers do show percentage based trends and show an improvement in 2025 over other years:

https://www.suffolk.police.uk/

If you can provide numbers showing a trend then you could create a stronger argument and you may well be right that things are getting worse, I just don't think a single point illustrates that.

Either way the numbers are of course higher than anyone would like but is that a specific Ipswich issue? I think that's probably a countrywide issue with many contributing factors.

Last time I was in Ipswich I walked (drunkish) from The Plough back to the hotel up near the station on a non match day which has changed names and I didn't fancy it so now get a taxi.

I love Ipswich, spent 40 years supporting them and living in it and around it. Us and our people.

Yeah but you're a hard b*****d.

I think that's a valid point about frame of reference. As much as I think Ipswich has a lot of untapped potential and could be a lot more desirable for visitors and investment if it was managed a bit better, I can't say I've ever felt unsafe tbh. I guess as a 38 year old male I'm maybe less susceptible to such risks, and I've spent most of my adult life living in much larger and statistically more dangerous cities, so I suppose its all relative.

Although you’d think with all the talk of this ,I still can’t find a clear explanation online or here what the “award” is for … is it to regenerate a region ? ( I have at least learned you don’t have to be a city anymore at least for this ) … boost one further … reward one for its history “culturally” …. The only phrase I keep seeing is existing cultural diversity in candidates favour… and the winner usually gets some spotlight events through the year … a concert,a museum, a gallery visiting… and by default I guess some tourism.
It’s an honest confused of Peru question.
