Monday morning situation 08:44 - Dec 30 with 1456 views | SitfcB | Was woken up by the Mrs at about 10 past 8 telling me the downstairs fire alarm was going off. No one in. We live in a flat with one below us, separate entrances. Went down had a look through the letterbox no sign of fire. Googled the landlords (estate agents) to see if there was an out of hours number, there isn’t one on the website. (Maybe we should get it) So I rang 999 told them and they sent a crew out. Fire engine arrives, with no less than 5 blokes. They have a check with the thermal imaging camera and ladder up to the high window out the back and find nothing. Just feel maybe it was a waste of resources/time calling them out? Did apologies to them and said not sure what else to do as may have been something smouldering or whatever. Would you have done the same?? Typically there was a house fire opposite the in-laws last night where a man died so... [Post edited 30 Dec 2019 8:51]

Monday morning situation on 08:48 - Dec 30 with 1386 views | Mullet | You did exactly the right thing. Any threat to life needs reporting. When I was a student I was back on my own and our fire alarm went off and I couldn't shut it down for ages. I'd cooked my tea about twenty minutes earlier, but there was no sign of fire anywhere. Told 999 all of this and they sent a crew out who checked the whole house including the loft. One of them got a bit arsey with me, but even his mate told him to shut up in the end. Generally they'd rather not have to recover bodies or go into buildings already well alight, and it be an alarm fault or whatever. I still felt stupid for ages about it, but it's a small price to pay I'd say.

Monday morning situation on 08:49 - Dec 30 with 1371 views | brogansnose | Yes I would. I'm sure the services would rather come out and find nothing than burnt bodies. Think you've played it by the book there Sitters.

Monday morning situation on 08:51 - Dec 30 with 1353 views | Steve_M | No, you did the right thing. Far better to be safe here than take the risk.

Monday morning situation on 08:55 - Dec 30 with 1308 views | Guthrum | Entirely correct. Had a situation once where I accidentally left something on the cooker and went out. My neighbour thought she heard the alarm and went to ask the people on the other side, who said "It's probably something electric, ignore it." My housemate got back to find the place filled with smoke (fortunately no damage except to the saucepan involved). Fire alarms are there for a reason. It might be a fault/false alarm - but it may not be.

Also tell your neighbour what happened as soon as possible, presumably you are on speaking terms.

Monday morning situation on 09:11 - Dec 30 with 1192 views | HARRY10 | Spot on, and to be expected given that you are above said problem area. Thermal imaging stuff seem logical - now it has been explained that's what they can do. Maybe best to check with letting agent about what to do if any out of hours problem occurs, power cut, flooding etc as lack of contact details seem amiss. Also best time to make sure your contents insurance is up to date, covers everything.

Yes, just off the phone to them, they’re going to contact the tenant. Yeah will talk to them later when they’re back.

You wouldn’t want to get an earful from the misses if it happens again.

Monday morning situation on 09:22 - Dec 30 with 1118 views | BlueBadger | God yes. Better to look daft in front of 'the professionals' than risk something dreadful happening. In a similar vein, I never tell off anyone who puts out a 'false alarm' cardiac arrest call, no matter how 'spurious' it looks by the turn I've sprinted across the building. Apparently they no longer rescue cats from trees. #austerity Edit: Unless its on fire, then they would. Presumably. [Post edited 30 Dec 2019 11:10]
