I'm not getting any of this talk, but maybe it's me. Once things are opened up again the virus will come sweeping back and we'll be square one. If the attitude is to give up because people are finding it a bit hard and the economy is suffering, we all knew that before. We may as well have not bothered. Just one person with the virus can cause up to a 400 person spread within a month. Each of those can do the same, as can those affected by them. In practically no time at all we're back into the hundreds of thousands.

The lockdown is not designed to eliminate the risk of people getting it. It's designed to reduce the amount of people needing serious treatment around the peak. The strategy, as far as I know, isn't give up and hope but follow the models of contact tracing and mass testing. There is a voluntary app being developed which I assume will become much less voluntary once lockdown is lifted. I would imagine we'll also have to wear masks when lockdown is lifted.

Your first sentence though J, is referring back to the original concept of herd immunity and the flattening of the curve kind of talk. It's been dismissed, then reinvented, denied again, now being dressed as something else surely. We aren't testing on a national scale and cannot. It's not possible and it is certainly not possible to think about tracing anything now. That was only feasible early doors while the numbers were realistic enough. We still don't even know for sure if people can catch it twice.

And even France aren’t talking about national testing, just testing all With symptoms. One of the main points, is if France are 4 weeks away from a small relaxation of the lockdown we are at least 6 weeks away if not more given the two countries profiles.

When face masks are being discussed I assume it's only ever as a potential temporary measure when lockdown measures are lifted however much until a vaccine is developed and ready to be rolled out? Surely the main exit strategy should be to reduce the spread of the disease as much as possible until a vaccine has been provided.

I may have interpreted incorrectly but the Twitter thread in the OP seems to suggest people will be supplied with them? Although I’m still not sure how that will work as presumably people will need more than one mask

The pressure from the public and press to reopen in the coming weeks will gradually increase and crescendo as the Government dither. It's Government by reaction. No plan. Just dither and look into what the media asked yesterday.

France to begin partial lifting of lockdown from May 11th on 09:00 - Apr 14 with 1953 views | britbiker | Two weeks ago I couldn't buy one mask at a trade shop to do decorating work. We have already seen how many of the public react when it comes to hording. I get the feeling that the advice we currently receive from the government is also guided by the lack of masks available to the public.

I have already come to the conclusion that at some point I will catch the virus. The government response is purely to spread the admissions to hospital over a greater period. I have been off work for three weeks and have just received my text from NHS to stay at home for 12 weeks as an at risk person. I am fit but do have a hereditary lung condition. I rarely get illnesses but feel a fraud as im working out at home every day. However when I do catch the illness it could be very dangerous to me. I have a boss who is keen to restart work and totally ignorant to spreading the disease as he feels it is just like a cold. Not sure how this is going to resolve itself. I agree but I know from talking to others that their mental health is taking a battering at the moment because of the seclusion - they’re either going to make themselves ill through worry or break curfew because they cannot cope any longer. It is one reason the government was trying to hold off lockdown for as long as possible and maybe one of the few ideas which is now being proven correct.

The only exit I can see is reduce lockdown - allow infection - lock down. Reduce lockdown - allow infection - lock down. If anyone thinks there is another way I'd really like to hear it.

I think they’re looking to go down the test - isolate - trace route to try and prevent excessive spread but we’ll end far more tests than we have available at the moment. [Post edited 14 Apr 2020 19:35]

How is that going to end this though? Surely there are only two ultimate solutions - and we haven't got a vaccine.
