Positives today.... on 15:06 - Aug 29 with 3490 views | Nthsuffolkblue | In all seriousness, how close did any of the team on the pitch at any time today match with what we will play during the season? I would suggest pitch time for Hawkins and Norwood and no injuries picked up are positives enough. It is disappointing to be beaten by a league 2 side but the result really doesn't matter that much. We need to play our first team next Saturday and they need to take it seriously. I won't be disappointed to go out of that cup but we really could do with the confidence of a performance and a positive result. The midweek game can be for fitness for the rest.

.....our biggest issue (amongst many) last year was that we had no defined game plan, no defined style of play and no defined starting 11. Pre season is the perfect, and only, opportunity to address that, yet we have not. Nobody has any clue who will be starting and they definitely have no idea what style (if any) we will be playing. How do you think the players feel at the moment? Whatever job you are in, you need to know what your role is, how you will be working and who you will be working with. It's basic stuff, but the fraud seems incapable of doing it.

Positives today.... on 15:18 - Aug 29 with 3336 views | unstableblue | Agree it sounded like no identity to play, which despite the huge amount of change is still a concern. BUT?! That’s 90 mins for Huws. Norwood got 45 and sounded bright. Hopefully there’s no reaction. Holy and El Mizouni sounded on form when brought on. Let’s hope to see Lamberts preferred team against Bristol Rovers with all the niggles with key players settled and lessons learnt from today. Team: Holy KVY Chambo Wolfenden Ward Bishop Downes Huws Lankester Norwood Jackson

I agree with that. I felt we did have consistency of formation and style in the previous matches. Yes, this team was radically different. Was it also a different formation and style of play? I think he used it as an exercise in fitness for some who haven't played but the worry is that he does that with matches that matter during the season. He does need to be consistent and players need to know their roles and be comfortable in them. I hope they do but fear you may be right.

I agree that we have got two more games to try to decide what the starting team for the real games is to be. One of the games is almost meaningless and the other one is totally meaningless but some contenders for stating the real games will need more game time and others will need a bit of game time but not too much. I suppose the Bristol Rovers game could start with something approaching the team that is expected to start against Wigan but to be able to do that PL would need to have some idea of the team that he wants to start against Wigan.

Agreed. Our club is ruined. It's so sad to see. Evans has killed it. All that history. Then he comes along and rips it all up. What a total Muppet.

Ripping it up involves a positive and deliberate act. He's just inadvertently trodden all over it, let it fray and decay, and seemingly forgotten it.

I don't think he ever really had any interest from the start. Was looking for a fast buck. It didn't happen and he gave up from there. He has slowly shredded everything we were about.

I get that we all complained about formation and strategy, and now we seem to have one, but it's also about partnerships. The "counters" idea went out with Duncan. I know that you have said you take little notice of pre-season games, but as we get nearer to the real thing I would want to see some thought-through attempt at blending. Of course that may have actually happened, but, if so, then thinking again, and with a tad more urgency, is necessary.

I agree that it would help if the likely starting line up for league games was pretty clear by now but it does not seem to be. I would not think that many if any that are expected to start against Wigan will start against Arsenal's third team but some of those projected starters will need game time against BrIstol Rovers. I think the starting back four will be KVY, Chambers, Wolf and Ward so perhaps they could start as a unit against Bristol. Holy is likely to be first choice keeper to start with so maybe play him against Bristol but with Przybek with Wales presumably Holy will get one of the two games and Cornell the other one. Midfield and further ahead has all sorts of possible permutations.

However, Downes and Norwood almost certainly start. I suspect Skuse, Edwards and Sears are in his team. I would imagine Huws is too. It really isn't all that unclear if you ask me. Of course, Jackson, Hawkins, Dozzell, Bishop, Judge and Lankester may have something to say too.

If the clarity you speak of involves Skuse. Edwards and Sears, so clearly and sadly linked with failure, then a fit Bishop, Dozzell and Lankester need to have more than just a say.

I think if fit Bishop has to be in the side (or should be). Downes, as you say, is a certainty. I would like to have Huws in but also the side probably needs Skuse so that is four players for three places. I would like Sears to be in there and probably he will be. As you know from my post on another thread Edwards would not be in any starting team of mine but that does not mean that he will not be in. I think it is probably Norwood or Jackson. So it does not seem to me to be clear cut who plays ahead of the back four. Your post might be correctly predicting what PL is thinking regarding a starting team but we shall see.
