Treatment of Woolfenden 18:37 - Mar 9 with 3962 viewspointofblue

A bit random isn't it? First dropped out of the 18 by Gill (nominally Lambert), then returned for Saturday only to be absent again tonight. Yes, I know he's been struggling but he's been asked to be the senior centre back when he barely has the experience for that role.

I'm sure he does have a future with us moving forward but when we have two number tens on the bench plus three wide players (as Jackson can play out there if urgent too) it seems odd to not even give him a place there.

With PCs attacking preference it does make sense to have a more attacking bench than defensive.

All speculation.

Am sure there is a reason and that PC will have communicated the reasons behind it to LW.

Knowing us, that's more that likely! Though if so, would prefer to have McGuinness on the bench over Harrop.

Not sure, at least Harrop doesn't do anything. Sears gives things to the opposition.

Just can't see why we wouldn't have a more balanced bench considering the options available and I feel Woolf's been very badly treated this season, mainly by Lambert. Hope it doesn't put him back too far.

Yeah I agree. Part of me hopes he has an injury just so its not just a case of being left out.

I think it is as simple as not needing another CB on the bench with Chambers on the pitch.

But we did on Saturday? I assume he was just covering Judge's absence.

No sign of him again. I guess Cook is treating him with kid gloves going off his comments in midweek about those not playing being the key players but it must be difficult being a key centre back to not even appearing in the squad.

Alternatively he's not impressed at training and overall he hasn't played that well this season. It could also be that he doesn't want to load the bench with defenders.

Players should be treated on merit, not given special treatment because they are academy products.

He has not been a key centre back, on performances this season he is potentially fifth best, behind Wilson, Toto, McG and Chambers.

I feel a little bit gutted for him because I think he was set up with failure by being treated as a senior centre back alongside McGuinness. I’d like to see him alongside Chambers or Wilson in the middle where he can be offered some support rather than being expected to lead the defensive line.

Last season though he was one of our better performers.

ETA - McGuiness has dragged us back for the same reason as Woolfenden has this season - two kids in the middle do not work. If we’re going to bring a youngster through it should be ours, not someone else’s, especially when the different in talent is not that great. Toto has a mess up in him and neither he or Wilson are known for trying to play out from the back. We’ve been leaking chances and goals in recent weeks; the lack of finishing has saved us, Gillingham excepted. The defence as it is is not that great.

Though interesting to note that if it were to be Chambers who copped an injury, there is no-one on the bench who'd be a natural fit for RB, though Skuse has played there. Yet, gIven this, there is no Mathieson so, unless he too is injured, it says several things re Cook.

It would make sense not to sub Edwards in case he were later needed to cover Chambers at RB.

Matheson is way way off the pace here...

Take that as #definfo.

Not sure if Woolfenden has been any worse than one man mistake machine Nsiala? And as I said, our current back four has hardly looked assured over the past few games.

The combination of Nsiala and Wilson have only lost 3 games this season as a duo. They've played 14 games together and kept 6 clean sheets.

As much as toto scares me he and Wilson works.

Although this may sound harsh I think they’ve worked through luck rather than judgement to date. Eventually their luck is going to run out.

Have you heard anything about him wanting to leave, as per ChateauWines’ post, Phil? If so I can understand him being left out of the squad despite the benefits I think he could bring.
