Interesting concept. My first thought would be how well adopted would it be with such a material increase to the travel times. London to Belfast, instead of 1 hour will be 5 hours 20.
As we've seen across other industries, consumers say they want greener alternatives, but are often unwilling to make any significant sacrifices, whether that be cost, time or quality, in order to achieve them.

I think demand would depend on price. If flights were more expensive then people might not mind the extra travel time. The travel is also likely to be fairly comfortable and point-to-point.
France has recently banned short-haul flights between places where train lines exist so if we tried something similar this could fill that void for people who want to go point-to-point with no changes or point-to-point where train lines don't really exist.
I think it could work pretty well in tandem with trains if the legislation was right.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I looked into taking a car plus 4 passengers across on the ferry from Liverpool and I think it would have been cheaper to charter a private jet

I have sometimes wondered whether putting large helium balloons as part of the design of ships/planes would reduce fuel usage and whether the savings would offset the financial costs. The additional advantage with shipping would presumably be that they would not necessarily need the same depth of water to sail in. The increased drag of a fully laden ship must be quite considerable.
