League 1 transfer dealings... 11:52 - Jul 21 with 2663 viewsOriginalMarkyP

I think that our dealings have only really been on par with a lot of the other top clubs in League One. Wigan, Lincoln, Sunderland, MK Dons...to name a few all seem to be doing good business in the window.

And what worries me is on a par isn't really going to help us. Because many of the clubs doing decent business finished above or around us. And certainly without the massive clearout we've done. So that means they were probably starting from a stronger position before they started bringing bodies in.

I know we'll bring in a few more, but I think we are only one of many potentially good teams in this league. In reality we could easily finish outside the playoffs. Or even struggle to get above 9th if things don't go our way.

Cook will need a good start because the reality of playing in a league where almost all the top clubs appear to be strengthing could bite hard very fast.

Sunderland's business has been dire. A midfielder on big wages who was good 4/5 years ago and never recovered from a major injury (remind you of Judge?), a 17 year old centre back that is going to be bullied week in, week out. Evans admittedly a good signing.

Harper, Burns, Bonne, Pigott, Fraser are players out of reach of the other clubs in this division IMO.

We've signed a very good calibre of player - but still so many gaps in the squad - defensively and out wide in particular.

Our signings have tended to come in bursts - could do with another burst soon!

Sunderland fans are very jealous of what weve done, they've done nothing in reality .

I'm not sure they have really.

Lincoln have lost Jorge Grant, Alex Palmer, TJ Eyoma, Morgan Rogers and Brennan Johnson. That's basically most of their best players last season. I don't see many guaranteed stars in the handful they've brought in so far to replace them.

MK Dons sold their best player to us and their recruits are unremarkable.

Sunderland have got Pritchard in but lost their target man.

Wigan are much stronger, but finished 20th last season and got taken over, so were always going to be!

Not a cat in hells chance I would trade our business for Sunderland's. I think we've done really well in the market so far, although disappointingly the most exciting of those we've been linked with we haven't got over the line IMO. Crooks, Celina, Bradley, Morsy. They were all ambitious (some more than others) and in Morsy's case I'm not sure there was much in it beyond a rumour, but they're players of an ilk that I really thought could properly kick us on a level or 2.

That's not to say Fraser, Harper, Evans, Bonne, Piggot et al can't, I think they're all very exciting signings, but I'm still hopeful there's a couple of meaty ones to come. Agree we still look light defensively too.

If we pull Celina out of the bag, you won't see a better signing relative to level being played at this summer. Of course, unless Bale does wind up at Cardiff!

Agree we could do with more defenders, but equally, we kept plenty of clean sheets with a similar backline playing in front of Holy and behind a much more lightweight midfield. If we line up against Morecambe with Nsiala and Woolfenden at centre back that's no disaster.

Not sure what you mean about being ‘on a par’ with ours. Do you mean of a similar quality?

If so it means that we have had a massive upgrade in the squad and that we will now be able to compete equally with the teams that were above us.

It wouldn't be a disaster, we just have no depth beyond that other than unproven kids. At right back, we're putting a lot of faith currently on KVY being fit when he hasn't thus far demonstrated an ability to do so. I don't see Donacien as a Cook full back with that appetite to bomb forward. We're 2 or 3 short at the back, and our pursuit of Bradley previously suggests it's an area we're keen to strengthen. I'm a bit surprised it's taken so long.

Based on our transfer dealings, you are predicting we will finish lower than 9th then.

Interesting take and not one you will get too many subscribing to. Time will tell. Of course, we may well sign a lot more players. Also we may start a little slowly as the team may take time to gel.

Nah, sorry but that's tosh.
The calibre of signings we've made so far is way beyond our rivals imo. Yes we're light in a couple of areas still, but with a few more signings of a similar level we'll be looking very strong indeed. Have faith!

We definitely need more there, for sure. But now that we've assembled most of our first choice midfield and front line, if the defence takes a little longer, even into early season, I don't think it'll kill us.

Ipswich: 8 - Vaclav Hladky, Macauley Bonne, Rekeem Harper, Lee Evans, Wes Burns, Matt Penney, Scott Fraser, Joe Pigott
MK Dons: 7 - Franco Ravizzoli, Scott Twine, Mo Eisa, Aden Baldwin, Max Watters, Josh Martin, Ethan Robson
Wigan: 7 - Ben Amos, Max Power, Tom Naylor, Gwion Edwards, Jack Whatmough, Stephen Humphrys, Charlie Wyke
Lincoln: 4 - Josef Bursik, Dan Nlundulu, Chris Maguire, Lewis Fiorini
Sunderland: 3 - Callum Doyle, Corry Evans, Alex Pritchard

On a par? Really? Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally?

Taking Sunderland as an example... Whilst we've bought in Pigott who scored 20 goals in 45 games for a team that finished 13th in League one. Sunderland have sold Wyke, who scored 26 goals in 42 games, for a team that finished fourth in league one, and have failed to replace him.

If things don't go our way in every match next season, we could finish 24th. But the likelihood is we are going to finish somewhere between 1st and 6th, based on our recruitment. As everyone on this board is aware, we still need more players, based purely on how many people we've let go.

He did say our rivals, though. He might be looking at them as mid table (since he thinks we have moved no further forward from last year). What about those who will be challenging for promotion? Oxford, Fleetwood, Rotherham, Wycombe and Doncaster?

Our player of the season is now at Plymouth.

There should be a context to this, though. Fraser is a completely different level to Wilson. The OP is just saying something controversial for the sake of it and in the hope that we will start slowly (not altogether implausible) and he can go "told you so".

I think there’ll always be players which other clubs sign who some of us would have liked to sign love here - Jayden Stockley, Craig McGillivray, George Dobson and Sean Clare at Charlton. Chris Maguire is a nice signing for Lincoln. Scott Twine for MK Dons. Clark Robertson joining Portsmouth. Maybe Matt Pennington could have done a job for us at this level but he’s gone to Shrewsbury. Alex Pritchard is a good signing for Sunderland. Wigan have done some very good business - Naylor, Whatmough, Power, Wyke.

Saying that we’ve done a good job so far though obviously there are still some gaps to fill.

Of course... and I do think Wigan have done good busisness but I think we have done good work so far with more to come. Think we're a bit better than par ATM.

A CB or 2 I think puts us in a good place but I feel that might come late in the window as a final loan, someone not happy to sit on a championship bench who maybe comes available once squads are a bit more finalised.

Last week the only signing in League One I was jealous about was Scott Twine going to MK Dons. Then, a day or two later, we bring in arguably the best attacking midfielder in the league last season.

Switch Hull, Peterborough and Blackpool with Sheff Wed, Rotherham and Wycombe, and put them 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the table from last season. Including those three, of the 12 teams that finished in the top half last season, only us, Charlton & Crewe have improved/stayed consistent.

Wednesday release nearly a dozen players, and have had to sell more. Rotherham are on the verge of losing Crooks and Smith, their top goalscorer last season. Wycombe have lost their two best players to the Championship.

Sunderland have lost 64 of their 91 goals from last year. Lincoln have lost 50 of their 98 goals. Oxford have lost two of their best defenders. Portsmouth have lost their goalkeeper, best CB, and every centre midfielder.

None of the seven teams mentioned above have improved their squad. They are all MASSIVELY worse off than last year, whereas we are already better off bar two defenders and a winger. Then it goes into supporting players.
