Government: We want schools to reopen before it's safe because being in school helps disadvantaged kids

Also the Government: Won't fund school meals for disadvantaged kids in the summer holiday

There was a thread yesterday saying it was unreasonable to expect teachers to work over the summer holidays as they had been doing their jobs during the lockdown period already.

How does that argument not apply to the cooks in the schools as well?

Obviously it would be great if disadvantaged kids got school meals over the holidays but interested to know why the perception of what is acceptable is different for teachers and cooks within the same establishments.

Edit: Not really sure what I was thinking this morning, I know it's vouchers at the moment.

You can't really call them free "school" meals..... on 09:47 - Jun 16 with 3466 viewsBloots

…...if:

1. The Schools are closed due to C19 concerns
2. The meals are provided during the period the school would normally be closed

They are just free meals.

Hyprocrisy works for all sides unfortunately.

A number of parents/teachers/unions don't want the kids back in schools, but they do want the schools to feed some of the kids.

It's a total minefield.

Don't think they're expecting the schools to cook the meals, currently those kids not in school that are eligible for free meals around here get a voucher, believe it's a £15 tesco voucher here.

As a side, the school cook at my child's school isn't working, the meal options for those kids in school are home packed lunch or a cold school dinner (aka packed lunch) prepared at a hub and bused in.

Fair enough, that's a different matter then and it should be done.

Have to admit that's been my fear, I'm hoping there's some conditions attached to it but no idea if there is.

Having had a near neighbour's (very young) son turn up at my house at all hours in the past saying they haven't had breakfast/lunch/dinner and knowing how much the mum drinks, smokes and the rest I have the opinion a certain percentage of benefits should be in food vouchers but I'm aware how that makes me look like a bit of a tory.

If the alternative is loads of kids going hungry, then of course it is the concern of the government.

To be fair, our country also seems to spend its money on the equivalent of Sky, alcohol and ciggies, given we don't have enough money or inclination to address 4 million kids living in poverty.

It doesn't mean that parents also don't need to take responsibility but the numbers are far beyond that.

Not sure why ensuring children don't become malnourished is such a contentious issue. What person in their right mind wouldn't want to see safeguards in place?

Westminster could try behaving like a grown up government and do what we're doing in Wales (confirmed back in April); guaranteeing those eligible for free school meals will continue to receive support until they go back to school.

It's a national embarrassment that we've got so many kids who qualify.

Because a lot have been off for a long time when they would normally be in school and haven't been receiving what they normally would have I suspect (there have been some complaints that people haven't been able to get their vouchers).

Nope - but there are a lot more families likely to be reliant on stuff like this due to the current lockdown situation.

It hopefully removes a worry of how the most in need parents are going to feed their kids for the next month and a half, which can't be a bad thing.

Because making sure children don't starve is an absolute bare minimum of things that government should be doing?

Yeah good point, there's really been nothing unusual going on this year that might mean people have less money than normal.

Because the government presides over a country where hundreds of thousands of children live in poverty. Given it has no interest in doing anything meaningful to redress inequality the least it can do is make sure kids don't starve.

I have nothing against helping kids in poverty, far from it.

Anyways it looks like the Govt is now going to help out, so I'm expecting to see lots of praise for them on here....

Not mad. Just a bit thick. You've just had over 3 months where kids would have been in school but arent. This must have impacted disproportionately on the very poorest and disadvantaged.

They don't deserve praise for doing the bare minimum under duress.

You say you have no issue with helping kids in poverty and yet I look at your posts on the subject across a few threads and it tells me the opposite of that. Perhaps you just don't want to own it when it's put to you in such stark terms, understandably so. You'd have to be a right kunt to have something against helping kids in poverty.

This is a tweet from James O'Brien who still has a job at LBC unlike Nigel Farage.

The people arguing that hungry British children should be denied help in the school holidays seem to be *exactly the same people* that argue we should ‘help our own’ instead of sending money to countries suffering from famine.
I’m beginning to think they’re not very honest.
