Following on from the Wood thread - how much would the 1981 team be worth today? 15:32 - Jan 12 with 1583 viewscbower

Assuming they were at the height of their powers:
Here's my guesses:
Cooper - 8 million - top 5 goalkeeper in the country
Burley - 15 million - scottish international, marauding full back
Mills - 20 million - England regular and sometimes captain!
Thijssen - 30 million - Dutch international - recognised by fellow pros as player of the year!
Osman - 20 million - England international
Butcher - 40 million - legend, capped 70+ times by England
Wark - 70 million - 36 goals from midfield, bought by multiple Champions League winners
Muhren - 25 million - Dutch international, walked into Man Utd first team.
Mariner - 50 million - England centre forward for many seasons
Gates - 30 million - England international
Brazil - 50 million - scored lots of goals, went on to Man Utd and Spurs

and let's not forget the Beat too. (60 million) - Sir Bob said he was the best he'd seen!

Over 400 million!

Wow! I even think I have been a little conservative too!

Any thoughts?

Cooper would be worth min £30m
Burley (given Wan Bisaaka's price tag) £50m

When you take into account Harry Maguire being sold for £80m I think a lot of those fees need to be revisited.

I'd say. When you think many were considered amongst the best of their contemporaries at the time, you could easily triple some of those estimates.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Mariner at £100m would be a steal. He’d walk into any current top team. Think Havertz, Werner, Lukaku - he could do all of what those three do. Hard as nails too.
Burley: undervalued. Luke Shaw signed for Man U for £30m in 2014. GB was a lot better than him.
Wark - top scorer in Europe for years. £100m bare minimum.
Osman - worth more than a paltry £20m

In fact the only correct valuation is Cooper

If Grealish is £100m surely Thyjssen would be 60-70 million

You spelt "If Grealish is £100m surely Thijssen would also be £100 million" wrongly.

Anyone who saw Thijssen play in his prime here will tell you what a devastating
player he was. At times, he was unplayable. You’d have him in your team long before Grealish

Bowers - not your usual standard!

You could double most of those - except Warkie. But even then he’d go for more that £100m

He certainly could stay upright a lot longer than Grealish 😉👍

I did say I had been conservative. However, from the reactions received it seems I am miles out! I grew up in the 70s and 80s with that team so know them well but perhaps I still can't get my head around the ridiculous money for transfers nowadays. I will go away and consider how wrong i have got it!

Steve McCall-Play anywhere. 50 million.

Total squad value.

Feckin billions.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I think the saddest thing is that if we could so some timewarp and be 1981 in 2021 that despite £45 million from the Europa League win, £160m in PL prize money, £3m from an FA cup semi, selling out PR each week, we wouldn't be able to keep the players because the oil/blood/etc money would blow us out of the water. Selling Wark for £100m is great, but how can you replace him?

Easy, get Mark Brennan for 25k.

Or wait for his contract to run down and re-sign him on a free. Again.

"Thijssen - 30 million - Dutch international - recognised by fellow pros as player of the year!"

So £30M for the best player in the league in today's money?

Yes, I agree you have underestimated.

The best team he ever built.
