Because of the inherent corruption, which everybody knows about, of the supposedly 'free market' system, which we continue to allow to destroy our countryside and our society because the gods of growth and pension funds. All despite knowing that there'll be nowt to spend a pension on in a fked up world anyway. Crackers.

The costs are due to 30 miles of tunnelling, bridges, covered cuttings and the like, mainly at the behest of Tory MPs.

The result is that the cost for each mile of HS2 is almost ten times higher than the price paid by France to open a new 188-mile stretch of its high-speed network, at £46 million in today’s money.

They would have known how many tunnels, bridges etc they needed before agreeing a price. There are many questions that need answering, but won't be.

Because like all government contracts the costs will initially have been based on everything going exactly to plan with no delays/problems/excessive inflation and the contractors will have over promised on delivering.

Corruption? Possibly, but more likely that government ministers and senior civil servants are just not experienced enough in the areas they are making decisions on and the firm’s building this thing are running rings around them.

It was ever thus, unfortunately!

They could have spent the money they've already spent improving or adding to the infrastructure that was already there.

But now we've started it seems bloody pointless to make a train line that goes from just outside Birmingham to outside London slightly faster than the line that's already there.

What a waste of time and money. I'm sure some private companies made lots of money though.

But that's the thing, who does this benefit? From what I've seen they won't extend it into Euston where at least it would make some small amount of sense. We'll have a train going from Birmingham to Old Oak Common.

Truly what the country has been crying out for.

The main need for it - improving capacity North of Birmingham - still remains so the likelihood is that but gets built anyway at even greater cost just as redesigning Euston to reduce the number of platforms cost nearly as much as building to the original plan would have done.

There’s been a lot of engineering work done already, Euston and the south of Camden have been a building site for years, and some extensive tunnelling and bridge building has been done further north.

I see that Downing Street are denying the cancellation decision has been made again this evening, just to highlight how well this is doing.

The country should be spending on infrastructure though, that includes doing HS2 properly AND the northern rail links which are desperately needed.

You can trust the Conservatives to spend your money.

Whatever you do, worry about the loony left wasting it.

As for the OP, I think the official Conservative line is, yes it's a great idea ... but we can't afford it ... but we might find the money ... and, err, Labour won't say what they will do ... I'll let you know our decision ...

It’s a brilliant idea. There’s no reason for a tiny little island to have loads of domestic flights. If we had a modern fit for purpose rail system it would do more for ‘levelling up’ than any Tory ever has. And it would make life a bit easier and take more polluting transport off the roads.

But it’s being implemented by feckwits.

There was something in the press the other day about how Labour’s manifesto under Corbyn would have cost the country far less than the wastage under the Tories. Yet remember all the ‘they’ll bankrupt the country and take us back to the 70s’ stuff? Politics is in a right old sorry state in the UK.
