Keeping cool tips 15:03 - Jul 12 with 2537 views | unbelievablue | I live in a 6th floor (top floor) flat which faces east and north. Gets so much sun. I am melting. Fans running constantly, windows and doors open. Any tips and tricks?

Keeping cool tips on 15:06 - Jul 12 with 1766 views | Coastalblue | Stay where you are! I'm 5th floor, same direction and most of our windows don't open more than a crack due to the station below. It is brutal at the moment. One weird thing that does work, put your bare feet in a bowl of cold water while you're sitting.

As opposed to wearing shoes and socks. That's where I've been going wrong.

Keeping cool tips on 15:22 - Jul 12 with 1607 views | geg1992 | Not sure if my house is just particularly well positioned, but I find that if I close all windows and close the blinds to not let any sunlight in, the house stays really cool. Then at night, I open the windows to let cold air in again. Not had any issues with heat thus far.

Keeping cool tips on 15:27 - Jul 12 with 1586 views | bluelagos | Cold shower. To quickly cool off, blast of cold water on back of neck. Socks in fridge before bed. Ice lollies not ice cream. Windows closed if air outside is hot, open if cooler outside. [Post edited 12 Jul 2022 15:32]

Top advice that, although mrs ullaa still fights back at the counter-intuitive thing of shutting windows / curtains in hot weather. OP, you could move house to into a tiny narrow north-facing terrace with not enough natural light - visitors normally pity us when they walk in to our hovel, but not at the moment.

For numerous reasons we don't have curtains on a lot of the windows. It certainly feels cooler when we have windows and doors open.

I can't explain that, so fair enough! In my experience, its like keeping the windows shut in winter to keep cold air out. The summer morning starts off cooler, so trap that air in and keep the sun and warming air out.

Makes sense, but we get the rising sun directly at all of our main rooms through multiple windows (some of which are wall to ceiling), and it seems to heat the hell up damn quickly, like a greenhouse. Sigh.

I love the way Brits can't wait to get abroad for a fortnight in the blazing sun but moan, moan, moan when it gets hot over here. Brits are afraid of heat. They also moan that it's cold in the winter.

I love winter, hate the direct sun, and haven't been on a 'summer holiday' in years. Bring on the cold.

Harsh. I spose you must have nice views to make up for it at least.

We're spoilt by our temperate climate and therefore very delicate.

The industrial heartlands of the Thames Estuary, unfortunately. That said, I can see Canary Wharf and Stratford from the balcony, and the Thames is less than 1km due north, so I can watch the ships go by. Looks nice at night.
