I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that 18:07 - Aug 21 with 3686 views | gtsb1966 | The most annoying thing for me in football is the deliberate foul when a team is breaking away. Would like to see more sending offs for that.

He "Took one for the team". Agree with your stance btw. The VAR view the ref was looking at looked just as bad as the numerous angles Sky showed, so the red should have stood imo.

I thought he deserved to be sent off for that. Knee high, no attempt at the ball, took the player out. Mind you, seeing the reaction of the City players when the decision was changed was funny.
I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 18:44 - Aug 21 with 3082 views | Trequartista | I thought it was a yellow at first but almost a red, surprised var got the ref to look at it again as not a clear and obvious error, not surprised the ref overturned it though, they don't seem to have the guts to against the var. i bet he was looking at that screen thinking "i don't really know if that's red or yellow, i'll just play safe and go with what var thinks"

I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 21:46 - Aug 21 with 2691 views | Garv | Definitely. Not for every little trip but when it's that blatant, not accounting for Trippier being airborne, refs should be able to exercise a bit of their own judgement and send the man off. The acceptance of the professional foul is going the same way as the acceptance of 'any contact means foul ' was going. All for stopping it.

I agree with you. It’s a massive bugbear of mine. Blackpool player got sent off yesterday for something similar (todays was worse imo)

I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 09:03 - Aug 22 with 2096 views | artsbossbeard | I've been boring people for ages on this subject AND I'm one who has always told my lads to give a foul away on the half way line to break up play and allow us to get back in to shape. IMHO, a rule change is needed here as this type of cynical play robs teams of a goal scoring opportunity. It's frustrating as a supporter when you see a 3 on 2 develop from an opposition corner, for example, only for the player on the ball to get clipped for a cheap free kick and everyone back in position. I noticed the Rangers lad on Saturday got a straight red for exactly this but the ref spoiled it by not given the Hibbies lad a red for something similar.

20 mins in the bin for a non-violent but professional foul (although Trippier’s tackle was pretty reckless)

I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 11:12 - Aug 22 with 1823 views | Wickets | Yes i agree but sometimes its hard to tell deliberate from an honest challenge although not in this case . I would have had no argument if the red had stood and we only have to look back to the Euro final where a shirt grab around the neck was only deemed a yellow !
I'm glad Trippier got sent off for that on 11:34 - Aug 22 with 1750 views | itfcjoe | This happened to Allan for Everton last season and it was upgraded from a yellow to red, was amazed this went other way. I'm all for this being a red, I don't like cheap pull backs or subtle trips - but when they are cynical and you are having to go to ground to make them, or tripping someone with absolutely zero intention or chance of getting the ball and it is just a total professional foul it should be a red

But where does it stop and how long before player start diving like they do in the area to con a penalty rather than stay on their feet with a clear opportunity?

You could apply that logic to not having penalties - they encourage diving in the box. I'm waiting for when refs start giving penalties when a defender puts his arms around an attacker at a corner

I'd agree with that. I played both football and rugby as a youth and have always preferred the generally non-cheating nature of the latter, and the strong stance that rugby referees take in relation to cheating, talking-back etc. Indeed, maybe sin bins wouldn't be a bad model to follow.

Has that ever been done? If it were done as a matter of course, I'm sure it would put an end to it fairly pronto. [Post edited 22 Aug 2022 14:52]

I'm sure it's been mentioned that referees are going to crack down, I guess one issue is that attackers are doing the same to some extent

Can it be done? Does the ball have to be in play for a pen to be given? Imagine a team A's keeper is about to take a goal kick, when one of team B's players headbutts a team A player in midfield. Team B's player would be sent off... but would the goal kick be changed to a free-kick?

I think it is going to be hard when doing a cynical foul like this for it to be anything but a foul - if a player stupid enough to dive in like that in an area like that with only intention being a foul then they get what they deserve
