It' s all a farce. Truss was elected on a platform of tax cuts and within a few weeks she has revered her flagship policy. She has zero mandate. I still think she'll be gone by the time we play Derby.

While the timing of ending the hated bankers' bonus cap was politically naive, it doesn't cost the treasury any money & actually should produce extra tax revenue.

That doesn't cost the government any money and wasn't one of the contributing factors to the markets freaking out. We may as well have a cap on footballers bonuses, pop stars bonuses and actors bonuses.

LOL. Prime Minister, my arse! She can't even send a message to her MPs without help from Hunt, who clearly is the de facto PM as suggested.

Whataboutery. Cotty said "no one wins" - I merely pointed out that bankers have won, quite spectacularly, from the budget. Post the cap being introduced, many bankers packages were shifted to increase their base pay and reduce the amount they could earn in bonuses. (To try and reduce reckless risk taking) Now unless those bankers are now facing a reduction in base pay, I think it is self evident that they remain one of the few winners from the budget.

Is Jeremy Hunt now De Facto Prime Minister? (n/t) on 13:29 - Oct 17 with 1511 views | giant_stow | My prediction: the markets will get nervy again when its clear that the current PM (Hunt) has no mandate. Fingers crossed an election with a solidly backed Labour govt brings things to a close. There's no way the Tories can carry on without support.

The difficulty they have (one of many tbf) is that the housing market drives so much economic activity in the UK. We really are addicted to rising house prices. Has to end at some point...

I would imagine that the nominal value of the asset behind mortgages plays quite a big part in the supposed worth on the plus side of the banks' balance sheets too.

You don't understand that at all, do you ? Perhaps being a righties has something to do with that lack of understanding "The cap was introduced by the EU after the 2007-08 financial crisis. It was part of a set of regulations known as the Capital Requirements Directive that were meant to force the financial sector to insure itself against the kind of weaknesses that led to the crash and a raft of taxpayer bailouts. The banking sector’s bonus culture was blamed for encouraging short-term profits over longer-term stability in the lead-up to the financial crisis, with Lord Turner’s 2009 review into the crash saying bonuses may have encouraged bankers to take “excessive risks”. The hope was that, with less of a banker’s pay riding on their performance, there would be less of an opportunity to incentivise risky behaviour." So to liken their bonuses to footballers pay is absurd. and merely shows your ignorance, yet again If there is any parallel with footballers pay, then it would be that footballers are not bonused for the total number of goals scored in a game. For the obvious reason. When Truss talked of 'growth' she spoke of wanting more of the reckless behaviour that d to the Barber 'Dash for growth' 1972, Lawsons inflationary budget of 1988 and the rightie led world financial collapse of 2008. Growth for them is not building more house, hospitals and having more exports. It is about increasing revenue from the City through shuffling money around.
