Do we think he could be a realistic option in Jan?

He's available on a free, still only 29, and is enjoying a good spell for bottom of the league Forest Green. You wouldn't have thought it would be too hard to tempt him away from staying on there. Physical presence, can hold the ball up, can also operate a bit wider. The question mark will always be fitness with him, but I just wonder whether he might be a serious option for us that is based on more than just nostalgia?

Wouldn't actually be surprised to see him and someone else. He can't be on much at FGR and although other clubs would likely make an offer it would be a chance to come here and really prove himself before possibly being offered a Championship contact.

Truly impaired.

No. Too slow now isn't he to effectively press?

Just having a look at some xG stuff and Wickham doing really well and may be because he is a good finisher - if he could stay fit here - he has the quality to play at a much higher level and would be a real coup but obviously massive questions over finishing. Wickham is currently 2x his xG

When you look at Plymout players goals v xG it's mad to see how much they are overperforming

Hardie - 1.9x
Ennis - 2.6x
Whittaker - 2.4x
Azaz - 2.5x

Compared to Ipswich...

Ladapo - 1.1x
Chaplin - 1.6x
TJJ - 1.5x
Harness - 2x

Out of interest, what do Will Keane's xG stats look like?

0.31xG vs 0.27 Goals so 0.9x - he'll fit in nicely!

I can't look back at what he was last year but unless he had a ridiculous amount of chances he'd have been well up there at this level

For me, would be a better option than Rhodes.

But not convinced Wickham is who we'd go for. More likely a Prem youth as a direct replacement for the injured John-Jules.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The one thing he won't have lost is technical ability and strength presumably

That might be enough, given the chances we create

He's probably worth a punt, I wouldn't have thought a player like him is likely to upset the other strikers

It's not like you're going out and signing a blue ribbon replacement, you're getting another body in to add to the squad and he probably adds a plan B

Not for me Clive. He lived with Norwood in Cockfield when Norwood was with us and Mullin was playing for Cambridge, they were mates from Tranmere. Bit of a money grabber innit, jumping from banging goals in L1 to move to the Conference for the dough.

Was more in jest to be fair CB , that said , he's banging em in

He claims in the TV show he moved closer to home for financial reasons , sorry I meant to be near his family

I'm also aware of the "friendship" both he and Nors had - I can only imagine the conversations they had over a cup of tea

I would take him in a heartbeat. Of course there is the concern surrounding fitness with Wickham but he is seemingly in a good physical position right now though.

I have no idea whether they are similarly skewed, but it would be interesting to see the equivalent goalkeeping stats for Walton v Cooper. You have to think that any mismatch is unsustainable - I would imagine Cooper is miles above the nearest peer. And I also suspect that this will have normalised by the end of the season

Ignore the above - I have just seen those stats on another thread (back to basics...) - WOW

To be fair, I don't know the guy, might well have been for family reasons and given he's a scouser who had largely lived in and around the NW I don't doubt it was a big pull.
I'm sure the £5k a week helped though :)

I mean - he was in League 2 with Cambridge when he was scoring, and yes they were promoted that season but jumping down one level to a club with a much higher ceiling is not that unreasonable is it? It's literally what a lot of players have done with us.

Would be surprised if his name isn't on a list of considerations but obviously his fitness is a big issue as you say, which is presumably why his contract at FGR was only 6 months in the first place.

Not convinced we're in as desperate need for a striker as some make out but with TJJ out for several weeks or so and Ahadme essentially having to have a 2nd run at starting his season, an experienced cover might not be a bad idea and a striker in form who's about to be a free agent is a good option on the face of it.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

We’ve already got injuries galore and we are talking about an injury plagued bloke who is slowing up and whose career is on the way down. The only reason he is mentioned is because he started his career here and we are so used to hasbeens/yesterdays gravy, ‘do a job’ signings.

Yes, I think we need somebody and no, I’ve no idea who but surely we can do better than that, can’t we?

It’s a no from me.

It wasn't 1 level as Cambridge were already promoted and the contract was on the table. Staying there would've been L1 football. I can't recall anyone comparable doing that here given he was the main man at Cambridge.

The Bolton skipper - Sarcevic(?) - did similar last season going from Bolton to Stockport.

Think it will happen more and more often now - outside the top 10 of L1 there is little difference between the bottom 38 clubs in the pyramid wage wise.....and some non-league clubs (where no FFP or SCMP) pay significantly more, and can build a squad in non league that then can see them out of League 2 before the financial sanctions kick in

Think it depends on the motivations of the players. Money wise you're right in the short term, although proving ones self at a higher level is more likely to alert the attention of clubs higher up the chain who will offer more meaningful pay. A lot of players will want to test themselves as high as possible, so aside from money that's always going to be a factor. Mullin had already ticked off L1 with Tranmere so the appeal of having a crack at it with Cambridge perhaps wasn't quite as strong.

Based on the stats, Wickham is certainly doing the business. However, in all honesty (and despite scoring 2!) In the televised FA Cup game he did not look to have the legs for our game at all. It seems peevish when he scored from half way but overall he did not impress me that day. Maybe that was not representative of his work rate but it wouldn't fit in here if it was imho.

A fit Connor Wickham with service at this level will get goals. I'd be happy to see him join.
Importantly, he seems to be building a good foundation of fitness again which is half the battle when coming back from recurring injuries. Keane and Wickham would do nicely, with TTJ returning to fitness in due course.

Surely Bonne is a better bet, tore this league up when we played attacking football under Cook, struggled after that for personal reasons and the fact everybody apart from Burns stopped scoring.

Now we are back to creating umpteen clear cut chances has to be an option and I would go him over CW.

The only Muff in Town.

Knowing our luck he’d get injured in the first few games and we wouldn’t see him again until the end of the season. For the sake of his fitness, he should stay at FGR.
