Eggs 13:54 - Nov 16 with 2800 viewsMalcolmMeatballHead

Not sure about you guys but in Manningtree all the shops have been out of eggs for days. Has anyone else experienced this? What the HELL IS going on??

I have spent a lot of time in Thailand as I had a girlfriend out there. For breakfast it's common for Thai people (especially older people) have corned beef and eggs for breakfast. I know that will repulse some people but don't knock it until you've tried it because corned beef and eggs is great. Just fry a couple of slices of corned beef whilst scrambling up some eggs in the same pan and hey Preston you have a delicious breakfast

I'm half tempted to get the train to Colchester and go to the Asda near the train station but that will cost about 6 quid in rail fares so when you add things up taking into account travel, inconvenience and the actual price of the eggs I could potentially end up spending 10 quid on my breakfast eggs (besides which it's too late for breakfast).

Sorry to go on but I just wish there were more houses that sold home made eggs (you know what I mean, eg: not from battery hens but instead from people's pets that they keep in their back garden)

It's a bit like white dog poo really, you simply never see houses selling eggs from their front garden anymore. The sad reality is this is probably due to increased theft statistics. We are basically a broken society these days where you can't even trust someone to give you a quid for 6 eggs that were made by YOUR chickens

Does seem a bit pot luck at the moment. I have just managed to pick up a box of 12 at Aldi however.

They'll start again in February.

I saw some white dog poo at the weekend Malcolm. Avian flu has probably scuppered some entrepreneurial egg selling at folks front gates though.
Have you considered Ostrich eggs as an alternative to your conundrum. One egg would suffice for several breakfasts. Just hope for your sake that the Argentinian corned beef producers don’t go on strike or you will be in a right pickle.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think it's safe to say this is caused by Bird Flu and not the shops fault, thought I would add that disclaimer as I don't want to be sued by any brands of shops lol (although my argument will be if you read my original post I made ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION of specific shops so you can shove your litigation where the sun dont shine hahahaha)

Keeping chickens has always been something I've fantasised about. If I had a garden I would definitely buy some pet chickens that lay eggs. 4 chickens laying 4 eggs a day sounds amazing. 2 for me and 2 for whoever wants them. I could even sell them and make an income for myself (albeit a miniscule income)

Thanks for the reply but I wouldn't consider eating an ostrich egg if I was the last man on earth. They are too big and from what Ive read on various forums the shells are a nightmare to dispose of (something to do with calcium)

Depends where you live I guess, there are at least half a dozen private houses which sell eggs from outside their doors, within a 5-mile radius of me in rural N. Yorkshire.

But this is now out-of season (birds breed in spring & summer), and since Monday 7th Nov, Avian Flu has meant all domestic as well as commercial poultry in England are required to be kept indoors, so even if private sellers did have eggs to sell, they wouldn't be able to describe them as 'free range'.

Got a few insights from a guy who is an egg wholesaler the other day.

Firstly, the price on eggs has basically doubled in the past 12 months and could possibly go higher still. He says farmers have switched production from eggs due to the very low margins (he blamed the supermarkets here)

When I asked why farmers wouldn't simply switch back to eggs now the price has doubled, he said there were 2 issues. Firstly you buy some chicks and there is a lead time of close of 6 months before they are laying eggs. Secondly the increased risks around bird flu. If you have an outbreak, you only get compensated for the live ones that are gassed, all the dead chickens are on you the farmer.

He said the bird flu has around 2 weeks incubation and that if you see some birds with it, by then it is likely to have already spread. He said within 2 to 3 days of the first birds dying you could quickly lose half your flock.

So he reckons prices will continue to rise in the short term. Some supermarkets are definitely short (Bookers too).

The good news is that Asda today put a limit on consumer purchases and eggs have a shelf life - so bog roll type hoarding is unlikely.

*All as told to me by a guy in the industry - I take him at his word.

That was an interesting insight. Thanks. Funny you mention ASDA I'm actually walking to Manningtree train station with the intention of getting a train that will take me to Colchester train station and then my ambition will be focused on buying some eggs from ASDA in Colchester. Going to cost me the best part of a tenner though when you weigh up travel/ egg cost/ inconvenience

I do like an egg. I always use that old joke when people you've just met start talking about eggs i turn around and say 'you can't beat an egg' lol. Perhaps it's a bit of a dad joke but it's an ice breaker. Better than talking about the weather which every British person in the stratosphere bleats on about in their Smalltalk.

Have good night folks. I'm going to ASDA, don't be too jealous lol. I will log back on later to answer any questions

They make great pets. We have a small area at the bottom of the garden which is fenced off (and is currently under netting due to Bird Flu). They absolutely trash the garden if we let them out.

It costs a bit more in food than you save on buying eggs to be honest once you factor in when they don't lay. Plus we have 2 that are 7 years old and don't lay anymore. You can't beat a freshly poached egg that has been laid that morning though.

Pros are you have zero food waste - they eat anything. Cons - You have to dispatch the odd one when they get poorly which can be a bit grim.

Interesting. Thanks.

It may cost more but I guess you can't put on a price on the joy they give you (I imagine). Sounds strange but I'd just love to wake up knowing I had something to get out of my cess pit of a flat for. To tend to my chickens. If I had chickens they would have the best life ever

Funny, yet grim that you should mention dispatching them. For 3 years back in the day I used to finish work (when I worked) and spend 3 hours a night for a couple of weeks each December ringing turkeys necks and plucking them. That was grim let me tell you! If you pulled on the neck too hard you'd take it's whole head off and there would be a jet of blood spurting everywhere.

Edit: my sister was married to a farmers son near Otley and it was my sister's father in law who I worked for. The money came in handy (I have 5 kids!) And not only did I get paid in money I also got a free turkey and 2 bottles of wine
