Your favourite World Cup? on 14:31 - Nov 17 with 2846 views | Dubtractor | I voted Italy, even though it probably wasn't a classic in a lot of ways, because of the timing of it. I was 14, so the perfect age to be obsessed by all things football, plus this felt like the last time when a world cup was a load of unknowns (to me/probably others) playing in a tournament (who'd heard of Roger Milla beforehand?). That opening match when Cameroon tried to maim and injure Argentina was just a remarkable game! Plus England and Sir Bobby almost going all the way. Otherwise I'd say the Russia one was my favourite as it was a genuinely great tournament.

Your favourite World Cup? on 14:49 - Nov 17 with 2781 views | bluewein | USA '94. First World Cup I remember. I had a VHS of all 159 goals from the tournament which, along with The World's Greatest Goals video I watched religiously. Some great goals and teams in that World Cup, apart from the final which was such an anti-climax... Probs go with Russia afterwards as that's the most successful England team I've ever seen in my lifetime...

Same. England were mostly average, scraped by against Egypt and Cameroon, but found a way. Still recall the agony of defeat watching the semi final in Trader Jacks and then the thrill of watching angry fans smash windows in Ipswich town centre. Not condoning it of course but when you’re 18 and had a few pints it was quite exciting to watch it and hear the sirens.

78 was the first one I remember too - Arie Haan's great goals, Cubillas (sp?) for Peru and their fantastic strips, tickertape on the pitch in the final and the disappointment of Holland losing. But for me 86 edges it, was at the right age to appreciate the games, great football all round, Maradona, and probably one of my favourite matches of all time - Belgium 4 - 3 USSR.
Your favourite World Cup? on 15:26 - Nov 17 with 2658 views | gainsboroughblue | 82 was my first one from the point of view of remembering it. Can recall having the sticker album and the little hardback book that accompanied it, purchased from the solar Superstore on Sproughton Road. As a tournament, it had a lot of memorable moments. That Brazil v Italy game, the Schumacher challenge on Battiston, the Hungary 10 goals against El Salvador, Robson inside 27 seconds, and infamously the Germany/Austria farce. Plenty of ITFC interest too with England and Scotland there. Northern Ireland also representing home nations. From an England perspective, a bit of a flat conclusion following a struggle qualifying un the first place. Eliminated without losing a game having gone through two rounds of group stages. Can remember screaming in frustration at that Keegan header that he flashed wide. I think I enjoyed 86 more, although more games were on at inconvenient times for a 13 year old without a TV in his bedroom. Italia 90 was enjoyable, maybe not the highest quality, but this was tempered for me by being able to pass for 18 in the town pubs to watch the England games in the Cock and Pye.

Do you remember the World Cup book the Co-Op did in 82? Although as I recall I think they were cards they gave out as opposed to actual stickers.

I don't think I do to be honest. Definitely had the Panini album though. Used to get my stickers courtesy of Barkers on Bramford Lane. The one image I also think of is the Eric Gerets of Belgium one. That little hardback I mentioned was actually a ladybird book now I've searched for an image of it.

....in a bar in Zante. A window got smashed accidently during the celebrations. Immediately there was a whip round to pay for the damage and the bar owner ended up with about £250 to pay for a £50 window. If we'd have lost he'd have got 2 smashed windows.

1st one i remember was 1990, i really liked 1994 as i was into it more than 1990, but i remember 1998 as my favorite, there were some unbelievable goals in that tournament, Owen, Bergkamp. Ronaldo was at his peak in his career and was unbelievably good, sadly his peak.

Your favourite World Cup? on 16:27 - Nov 17 with 2441 views | Ftnfwest | I'm with Gainsborough 82 was superb with some enormous games in it. Algeria diddled by the germans and austrians as well but gave germany a slapping. Brazil were from another planet in that tournament, but italy and france had good sides as did the germans in the end. Plenty of town players too. 1990 for selfish reasons of coure but 82 was the first time i watched england in a world cup.

The Sproughton Wild Man was being run by an Irishman during that '94 World Cup so spent a fair amount of time there. Plenty of late nights in there downing Guinness and Whiskey which alleviated the ambivalence of England not having qualified and Ireland doing so. Of course, we also had Bontcho there.(at the World Cup, not the Wild Man) [Post edited 17 Nov 2022 16:38]

I'd just been thinking about that actually, as it was before I was into football & I remembered being in pubs with a load of beered up guys moaning endlessly on & on about us not having qualified.

Your favourite World Cup? on 18:19 - Nov 17 with 2239 views | Trequartista | I tend to like the old ones better 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 not because i'm old and nostalgic (well i am but that's not the reason) because there were fewer teams and i can remember who was in which group and roughly how each team did. I can barely remember anything from recent tournaments apart from the odd incident. When they increase it again next time, i'm out. Oh 1978 i think. Cubillas, ticker tape, even dodgier host regime than qatar, Luque, Kempes, Gemmill, Ally McLeod, Johnston's drug test, Clive Thomas disallowing a goal on the whistle, France/Hungary kit clash etc etc

Yeah they were multi-stickers with no adhesive so you had to paste them into the album with your own glue and scissors, making all the pages stick together. I think i remember they just handed you a batch each time you made a purchase at the co-op, but in the end just gave them away.
