the weight he delivers each one with....almost every pass is perfectly timed and weighted in a modern game where so many waste good positions with the modern trend to ping every pass at pace which often results in the ball going out of play...

Definitely looks a player.

Sometimes these youngsters come in and you can see they are good but just need to be a bit more strong etc etc.

Humphreys has come in and not looked out of place at all. Maybe we've managed him very well.

It’s very very early days but I already expect that from him just because of the way he has taken his chance. Best young player for quite a few years IMHO.

Good luck to the lad and well done for taking the opportunity

Was having this discussion with a mate yesterday, he's so slight in build but competes and doesn't look out of place physically. His positional discipline is incredibly good for someone of his age which certainly helps. Morsy is the perfect partner for him too, you can see that he really trusts Humphreys alongside him which is as bigger compliment as you can give.

The pass he put over to Harness to set up the 1st goal, was pretty accurate too.

That wasn’t Humphries, it was Morsy

Agreed.

I was also thinking yesterday that he’s learnt to use his body well. And to take the foul when players try to overpower him.

So his size really doesn’t seem to be an issue. In fact, with him coping well enough with the physical stuff, his size remains an asset for getting around the pitch and being quick and neat in possession.

I bloody love him. Just hope as a club that we can match his likely career progression over the next 2-3 years.

Him getting the opportunity, through injuries to others, and then grasping it as he has, is a perfect example of why it is important to have some young players in and around the squad rather than just out on loan.

We've spent the last decade or so loading our squad with also rans for squad depth (Tom Carroll being one of the worst examples, but there are plenty more), and they just block any opportunities for young players. We do have a fairly large 'senior' first team squad now in fairness, but not too many that are just making up the numbers.

Do we think his configuration with Morsy is different to Evans’? Strikes me that Humphreys and Morsy play left and right, whereas Evans was very much the deeper of the two.

Anyone got a heat map?

Was it possible a misconception that Evans sat deeper? He was top of league 1 for attacking passes etc.

Also, any young players that are kept here on the fringes of the first team squad are going to be getting top notch training, development, psychology and training matches these days, so perhaps it's not quite so important to get loans out for experience as it used to be. Perhaps depends on the mentality of the player a bit, and whether they get game time at the loan club.

Pretty gutting to think that we could have had a midfield 3 of Downes, Gibbs and Humpreys but we'll never get to see it. Even add Dozzell in there and that is a quality group of CMs from our academy.

Really looking forward to seeing Cam's progression.

It’s a small sample but I get the impression that Humphreys helps knit the left side together much better than the Morsy/Evans combo.

Possibly as you suggest because it’s a left/right combo rather than the 1 up, 1 back style of Morsy and Evans. But even so I think Humphreys is more of an all-rounder than the other two which probably helps him do that job.

When Evans is back I fully expect Humphreys to make way. But for me that would be more about managing the workload than saying Evans is a better player as Humphreys contribution has been comparable IMO.

TBH I have no idea how an attacking pass is defined - if it is one to a wing back who then puts a cross in then I am not surprised he tops those stats, but that doesn’t mean he is playing in a more advanced role than Morsy.

I think Evans used to take the ball off the CBs more often than the others - and that Morsy is doing more of that now. Not saying one is better than the other as a configuration, just that this is yet more evidence that we are adopting a round peg / round hole policy - and if you have a triangle peg you had better make the hole triangular (that definitely doesn’t make sense)

If it is the case that this is a new way of playing then I suppose it is unsurprising that we concede goals like we did against Cheltenham while it beds in, but suspect it will continue to look pretty good now it has settled down.

Agreed. Wes is stood next to Donacien at the start of the clip, then as soon as he sees Cam has stopped the cross coming in he’s away.

Just excellent counter-attacking football.

I think this is absolutely the key. All too often we've blooded youngsters into a sh*t storm of a team and expected them to float. I have so much confidence in McKenna knowing when the time is right for our academy grads.

It comes down to squad depth/priorities though doesn't it? While Cook bloated our squad, blocking the path of youngsters in the event of injuries and suspension to front-line players, KMac opted to have a tighter senior squad augmented with some youngsters.

True to an extent but Humphreys is getting his chance because Ball, Evans and Camara are injured - that's still a lot of traffic

hopefully he'll get enough time to show that he's worthy of equal consideration. And with a higher ceiling I'd like to think this gives him the edge given the clubs policy on financial development (buy low/sell high)

I actually disagree with this.

Before I start, don't get me wrong, his on the ball play is excellent and he definitely has a bright future.

However, I feel defensively his positioning affects the left-hand side. Every game he has played in so far, the other team have created lots down our left. That is because the game passes him by and his not filling the right positions.

If you look nothing comes down the right-hand side and that's because Morsy is positioned to cut it out or give them no space. Whereas on the left the just run through where Humphreys should be, and Davis is left one on one/two.

Great on the ball, needs to work on positioning off the ball.

Morsy’s defensive work and positioning is outstanding so no real criticism if Humphreys isn’t (yet) up to the same standard. But overall I think Humphreys can give us a better balance on the left.

If it weren’t for needing Evans right-foot for set pieces and the likely need to manage Humphreys’s workload then I think there’d be a proper battle to start alongside Morsy.
