Christmas TV Memories 08:32 - Dec 23 with 1628 viewsChurchman

Looking back, it was largely rubbish, but the overriding memories for me were:

The Queen’s Speech. We had to watch it. My grandfather used to stand up while she burbled away. I was bored rigid but made to sit quietly and show respect. Cruel.

The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show - a must see, but if you watch it now, it’s as funny as toothache. Strange how tastes change.

Top of the Pops - a must see for my sister and I. My parents didn’t like it and neither did anyone else, but we didn’t care. Slade and Wizzard accompanied by moans about the clothes, make up on blokes, long hair and platform shoes. ‘What’s this rubbish’ ‘why are they dressed like that’. Ignore.

The Christmas film. There was usually one on. Some family film special like Far From the Madding Crowd. Bored me to tears. Now the Dambusters or 633 Squadron - that would have done nicely, but no luck there.

Anyone else remember a show called Box of Delights? I remember it being brilliant as kid, saw it on Prime and couldn't face putting it on as it might tarnish my one decent childhood memory (Remember, I did started watching town in 86..)

Noel Edmonds in a Christmas jumper prattling away up the BT tower for some reason - has always stuck with me. No idea why.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

We had a few years of OFAH Christmas specials, enjoyed those as a kid.

Vicar of Dibley for some reason, not sure why.

Incorrect use of the first person singular pronoun.
Should be "...for my sister and me"

I know it's not cool to correct grammar and spelling on here, and mine is by no means perfect, but the *I or me* choice is one that many get wrong.
Just trying to help.
Merry Xmas

Yeah it has always been a bit hit or miss, but the last few years it seems like they have all given up. As far as I can tell, the only sitcom to get a Christmas special this year is Mr's Brown's Boys, and I would rather spend the next year trying to lick my own eyelids than watch that.

However, tis the season for World's Strongest Man and University Challenge. Other than that it looks like streaming services are the answer, unless I've missed something good in the guide?

Upvote for this:

“The Queen’s Speech. We had to watch it. My grandfather used to stand up while she burbled away. I was bored rigid but made to sit quietly and show respect. Cruel. “

For me it was Home Alone (the film that is, not some kind of neglect!) every Christmas!

Funny how things have changed . BBC used to be the pinnacle of what's on Xmas day. Now it has the leftovers from netflix

Only Fools and Horses and a Bond film, my dad trying to pause the VHS recording when the adverts came on while Bond played on ITV . Perfect. These days I've got OFAH and Bond boxsets so if they were on, wouldn't feel like a treat any more. Plus Bond seems to be shown on constant rotation on one ITV channel or another nowadays.

Not going out has a special I think Motherland might as well.

Not anywhere near high quality but watchable.

Even during the days I remember there being back to back films on the week leading up to Xmas now there’s 1 or 2.

Streaming has changed the landscape I do miss the days of Only Fools, it felt like an event even if I was a tad young for the earlier specials.

TBF, I enjoyed the Gavin and Stacey special which was 3 years ago already!

Raymond Briggs The Snowman.

Few things allow me to click into Christmas mode, but that always does the trick.

When we were kids it was the hour long show of Disney clips ‘Disney Time?’ That got us crouched around the B&W tele.

TOTP - definitely used to be a must watch every year
Always seem to remember watching Jimmy Scumville visiting sick kids in hospital - OMFG
Rarely watched the Queens speech, surprisingly, as it always clashed with dinner

I think that Not Going Out special is an old one, but I could be wrong and doesn't really matter if you haven't seen it before I suppose! I'll probably watch Motherland at some point though, good shout.

Yes, I do miss the Only Fools specials the most, nothing really comes close these days. Blimey that has gone quickly hasn't it

The Detectorists and Gone Fishing with Mortimer and Whitehouse both have Christmas Specials this year. Only real things I am looking forward too.
