Proposal that over 50s are exempt from income tax 15:38 - Jan 12 with 2484 viewsElderGrizzly

It’s not the most subtle of election bribery is it?

If true, that's ridiculous.

If I was under 50 (which I am), I'd leave the country (which I have).

The UK is a mess and people need to wake up and start creating a society and government that works for the benefit of all.

Can't see that happening as it would be much too expensive for the country .I am 75 today and have been paying income tax since I was 15 same as millions of others I would guess .

err, no

The proposed idea is that those who are over 50 and have been off work will be able to keep certain benefits, and not pay tax for a limited period.

The idea is a recognition of the harm Brexit has caused to the UK economy. The realisation that 'brow beating' the sick, the disabled and the mentally unsuited' into taking vacant jobs is not working, so instead of the stick it will be the carrot.

With the underlying thought that once any such person takes on work, albeit pnly part time. they will be thought to have been malingering.

I know this as a friend who was diagnosed with MND was required to attend an interview at his local jobscentre. And as at the time he was using an ordinary wheelchair (not specialist electric one) it was suggested that he could take on some form of clerical work - despite being a builder all his life. I advised him to point out in a letter that no sane company would employ him due to insurance.

On receipt they replied that he was deemed unfit to work, but his case would remain under review. I kid you not.MND ! Sadly we lost him just over a week ago.

Productivity.

Everyone and their dog knows the problem but they clearly don’t want to accept the solution of actually investing in the country, its industries and its workforce.

Things are so heavily weighted against the young that I genuinely wouldn’t notice if they brought in an anti-Tory tax. They’ve long given up on trying to bother improving housing or childcare (ie things which might actually increase productivity or standards of living for anyone under 40) and essentially view us as little more than a cash machine for their voting base.

If they can afford to retire in their 50’s they’ve clearly not contributed enough to the system anyway!

Or is it that they were a generation who lucked out on cheap housing and enourmous capital growth.

I can see the sense in this as the tax system disincentivises people from working when they could simply put their feet up. Posh Dave made things worse by making volunteering part of ‘the big society’ which was rapidly taken up to replace paid jobs in some sectors. The NI system needs an overhaul too - it ought to be possible for couples to top up the other half rather than see their contribution simply disappear.

Good point. Many old people need to stop working and free jobs up.

Baby boomers; I’m never going to retire!
Everyone else; I’m never going to retire.

Just want to make it clear just in case anyone does not realise that you dont stop paying tax when you retire as if your income exceeds your personal allowance you pay tax .

The jobs are currently free. That’s the problem. There’s a skills shortage in the market and things partly aren’t functioning as a result of that. So whether you agree or not there is thinking going on about how to encourage people back into work.

The title of this thread is wrong from what I read. It would be a year.

So if say you have a GP that’s stopped working, you may encourage them back to work. That would serve patients. And after a year would provide tax returns that otherwise would have been nil in an empty job.
