Bronson, or Charles Salvador as he is now named, has a formidable record of hostage taking & attacks on other prisoners & guards, hence his continued incarceration. By all accounts, he still has anger management issues & while he may feel he has been unfairly treated, would you want to be the Home Secretary who authorised his release?

When you look at the kind of people Who are released back in to society, they could at least put him in an open prison, and see how he can integrate back into society, they are just waiting for him to die. He’s still a human being I think He deserves a bit more compassion.

There’s a few on here with a weird fetish for releasing a violent loon into society. This isn’t the Chelsea FC forum you know?

He didn’t show much compassion for the people he harmed carrying out his crimes - unless you count actually not killing them as compassion. The argument that others who have done worse are being released in society doesn’t carry with me. They should stay behind bars too. I don’t believe in capital punishment but nor do I believe in releasing people like this. It should never be forgotten that prison is entirely voluntary. For me, he stays where he is. Just a view.

"None of the prison and probation officials who gave evidence at the parole hearing said he was ready to be released." Another comment referred to him seeing nothing wrong with living by "his own rules" - clearly unacceptable in society. I do think it's totally unacceptable & inhumane that he's spent a large part of his time in solitary though - surely some socialising for him daily could be safely managed if there was a will to do that.

He has been kept in solitary for others (and his) safety Either he persistently acts like a tw at or has mental problems. Neither suggest he is suitable for mixing with others. Had he been so he would have slowly moved down the scale by now. The key point is the guarded 'he lives by his own rules'. Humans are like most of the animal world social beings. Which means and understand that you are part of a bigger group and consideration, tolerance, understanding etc of others is part of that. Kicking off and 'enjoying a rumble' for what others do not understand will ostracise you, as it has. 'Early release' is no more that a prisoner serving the term as laid down. Sentencing increase that amount so as to make prisons cheaper to run. Twenty years. Behave and you will be out in ten. And when you are out, put one step wrong and it's back inside (see G Glitter) Others are held and will only be released when they are incapable of committing the crime they when inside for - Worboys, black cab rapist

Didn’t have you down as so lacking in imagination that you’d be unable to imagine bars or screens dividing rooms and preventing physical contact whilst still allowing conversation, Harry. And if you’d read my post more carefully, you’d have seen that I was totally opposed to his release. It was the solitary that I pointed out was unacceptable, and which work-arounds could be found for. [Post edited 31 Mar 2023 4:14]

No freedom for Charles Bronson (n/t) on 18:39 - Mar 31 with 1568 views | kpblues | In his latest bid for release he faked a relationship with his "son" for six years and him and his "son" did a very convincing documentary. This was Bronsons idea and he hoped it would gain him publicity and sympathy (which it did). The"son" in fact was not related and was a paparazzi photographer who made a mint. I thought originally they should transfer him to an open prison but on hearing this it would appear I was wrong and he was still trying to con the authorities which means he will never come out.

For some reason some violent thugs are held in high-esteem by some - The Krays also attracted a similar sort of sympathy. No idea why. I used to drink in the Whitechapel pub where The Krays used to frequent - think it’s where they killed someone on a snooker table (could be wrong). Nice pub but completely forgotten what it’s called.

Then there would not be much point to solitary confinement. Rather like using the electric chair but not plugging it in. Solitary confinement is merely the last resort when a prisoner is unable, or unwilling, to fall in line. As time progresses prisoners earn more privileges, and most will look to downgrade their category in preparation for leaving. It is a bit like snakes and ladders. That is idiot is at the bottom (solitary) is down to his behaviour. If he wants to socialise, and others want to socialise with him, then it is not difficult to achieve that In this case it is him, not the system.

Not sure why you continue to keep missing the point. "Prolonged solitary confinement is an extreme form of treatment, prohibited in all circumstances under international law." The Guardian, 01/08/2021 https://www.apt.ch/en/knowledge-hub/detention-focus-database/safety-order-and-di "Risks Whatever the reasons behind the use of solitary confinement, there are indisputable risks to people who are subject to this measure because of its effect on their physical and mental health. Psychotic troubles, anxiety, depression, anger, paranoia and self—mutilation are among the reported effects. These effects can be particularly severe or even irreversible, especially when solitary confinement exceeds 15 days." In other words, the very fact that he's been kept in solitary for such extended periods may actually be contributing to the behaviour that results in him put in further solitary.

The Blind Beggar, just along from the hospital building. It's pretty touristy these days and a number of 'gangster' tours start and or end there.

Indeed, but no one was killed on a billiard table there. That was a fantasy in the film starring the Kemp brothers. George Cornell (an associate of the South of the river Richardsons) was shot in the head in the Blind Beggar by Ronnie Kray.

"Prolonged" is a vague description. The use of solitary confinement and exactly what it entails is probably a little nuanced. For what it's worth, here is the Howard League's description - clearly comes across as being used more than it should be at the very least. https://howardleague.org/legal-work/solitary-confinement/

In the link I provided earlier, APT (Association for Prevention of Torture) give the limit as 15 days - "Due to its effects on the physical and mental health of individuals, solitary confinement should be limited (never more than 15 days) and procedural rules should help prevent all abusive and/or arbitrary use of such sanction".
