Is there a reason Town are releasing him if he's obviously thought of by other clubs?

He wants to leave?

He's having trials.

Most players when released will have a few clubs take a look and see if they are a fit to what they're after.

Got a feeling the club decided to release him. Had a very short loan spell at Braintree and wasn’t rated after pre-season.

Was it his dad who often used to be on Twitter bigging him up and saying he should be in the first team picture a couple of years ago?!

If so, coukd be agent / parent pressure making him want to explore ‘Bigger’ clubs?

There was a thread on here last week about a load of U21 players being let go.

I think there's a sense that the current crop of U21s needs thinning out significantly to give the U18s/16s the room to grow into senior football. Current depth of the U21 setup is creating a bit of a bottleneck.

In all the photos (probably a year or two old), he looks very 'spindly' for a defender. Has he filled out at all?
(In a rare moment of positivity, a Colchester Utd facebook site is wondering if he could be on his way home.)

Photo we used was from the Portsmouth Papa Johns game, so earlier this season. Physically, he's probably still to develop, but he's 18 so he has time for that.

Club is being more ruthless on development squad players, I've got some quotes from Mark Ashton from a couple of weeks ago on the thinking for when they announce the release, which is most of them. Essentially, the feeling is that the previous management held onto young players for too long for fear of them coming back to bite them on the bum by going elsewhere and being successful.

Sort of, although I think they mean players like Armin who are a fair way from the first team. He's probably not the textbook example of what they mean, I think that refers more to players who are into their early 20s and not really anywhere near the first team. Zanda Siziba, for example, who recently joined Yeovil, is 20 soon, for example, and wasn't really that close to the first team.

Is Nick Pope actually the only example of 'one who got away'?

Hourihane has had a good career after leaving us. Not sure if he was in the academy or joined us as a young pro.

Perhaps what instigated the concern, but there have been a few over the years, Ryan Bennett is another.

Although they were both released at 16, like Keogh.

Presumably also, with a bit more transfer money available, there is less urgency about getting every last drop of potential out of the Youth system as a feed for the senior squad?

I guess with someone like Armin who is likely to end up as a left sided CB(?) he's already got Baggott ahead of him at a similar age and then possibly Ndaba too if we persevere with him. That's a lot of traffic to get through and there's not the kind of money around below the Prem and those with parachute money for it to be worth us keeping him in the hope we get a fee if someone wants to take a punt on him.

Not sure we should have let Gibbs go to Norwich, he’s played a bit this season without setting the world on fire. Think Klug rated him highly, unless I’m mixing him up with someone else.

Gibbs is a bit different as he turned down the offer of a contract. Club basically made a bit of a mess of it. Initial deal didn't have an option year, then they didn't get back to him for an age after the contract was turned down, then the takeover happened and he wasn't top of the priorities.

My gut feel is that that extra money = lack of pressure to deliver on the youth system, and that by thinning out a bit more ruthlessly you create a better environment for a more elite youth system and a bttter chance of some really good youth players coming through. What you said, really.
