It makes no difference though. If there is 3 minutes left and we keep the ball for a minute, there is still only 3 minutes left. The ref doesn't add extra time on. He simply stops the watch for the period we were keeping the ball. If it takes the sting out of the game and disrupts the opposition's flow then I'm all for it.

If it takes the sting out of the game then yes but most of the time it doesn't. On ifollow they said Chaplin and Hirst told them to give the ball back so who does it help?

Either way it doesn't affect the amount of time the game is in play for.

I didn't mean to imply that it did. I meant if we waste a minute of normal time they ref will add a minute of IT on. So keeping the ball does nothing except maybe gives them a bit of a lift when the board goes up with a decent chunk of time. I said in a previous post about this that if it broke up the opposition momentum then great but it shouldn't become a habit.

Exactly, the players never respond well to it. I imagine they just want to stay focused and see the game out, it doesn't help when they're having to stand around for 30 seconds waiting for the ball to come back in to play.

Got to admit I enjoyed the karma of it when the goaly was suddenly keen to get on with the game and couldn't.

Guys. Stop with the throwing the ball back in the crowd on 23:28 - Apr 18 with 1640 views | LankHenners | It's really stupid and will backfire at some point (there was an instance a couple of seasons or so ago where the Cobbold lower kept chucking the ball away then the other team equalised in the last minute wasn't there?). One of those things where it's all fun and games until it very much isn't. Given how our players reacted to it it's fairly clear they'd strongly disagree with people saying it's a laugh or somehow tactical.

Yes, regrettably ours. When even our players are asking for the ball back it makes it all the more obvious it’s not needed.

I'm just going to mention it, as I'm sure you know this, but your post reads like you don't know. You understand when the board goes up, thats the minimum amount of time to be added on, not the only time to be added on, don't you? If the ref wants to add on more time, for the crowd keeping the ball he can. [Post edited 19 Apr 2023 8:59]

Tbf it was mainly Chaplin who was ridiculously pumped up. Ie yellow card for the push at the penalty and telling the ball boys to speed up etc. Understandable but just saying he was absolutely buzzed. I don't think it's an enormous deal either way. [Post edited 19 Apr 2023 9:11]

Agreed. Vale keeper fully deserved it. Had he not time wasted from 0 minutes the crowd wouldn't have done it.

So, it's wrong for Port Vale to waste time but OK for Town to do it once we're ahead? Two wrongs don't make a right, although in the cynical world of modern professional sport, we can't afford to be too high minded.
