Doesn't anyone else think, like me, that this squad (with a little more investment to come too) is actually already better than many of the teams we had when we finished mid table in the championship? I think the Championship is a big step up from League One and may take a few of the players time to adjust. But I think we certainly should have a competitive squad at Championship level, especially with a couple of quality additions over summer. I'd be happy with a mid-table finish next season, but quietly hoping for better! |  |

I wouldn't want to be relying on Pigott.
But I do agree that the bookies' odds are not daft. We're joint 5th in the betting in the promotion market, only shorter than 16 teams. In other words, the bookie (or the punters that shape the market) collectively think we'll finish top third. I don't think that's crazy. It's ambitious, and if we finished, say, 12th, most of us would consider that a successful season, especially if progress is made on other fronts, and the team spirit is decent. But having played Burnley and Rotherham last season, before we really hit our stride, I don't see too many reasons to be scared of that many sides.

The squad being better than it was 10 years ago is a) unproven and b) meaningless. How many of the other 23 squads in the Championship are we better than is all that counts now. We're strong now in that the collective is stronger, better coached and better managed. Not sure where you get Pigott from, he won't play a minute of football this season just as he didn't last.
Staying up is a minimum expectations. Top half is a realistic target and would be a good first season back. Playoffs would be excellent.

Aim high. I actually don’t think the standard is all that. Burnley were exceptional, Sheffield Utd were strong, Sunderland played nicely and Luton’s perfected hoofball worked. Aside from that?
Some of the lower teams looked frankly rubbish. It’s a step up, obviously. I think the way we play and many of the players recruited will suit this division. An addition or two, a tweak here and there to the squad and I think we will do more than ok. Hope over reality? We’ll know in just a few months time. |  | | |

If the pattern is repeated - there will be 7 mercenaries en route this summer - but what if the computer programme says get rid of the entire squad? After all none of them have been much good in the second division at their previous clubs.

Your knowledge of the squad is poor.
The belief and commitment in this squad is palpable and to think it's a squad of mercenaries compared to most of the other clubs in the championship is deluded.
A lot of the squad don't have much experience in the Championship. Those that do have done pretty well on the whole. Walton played every game for Blackburn a few years ago. None of the back 4 have more than 30 appearances there. Morsy has been a regular in 2 sides, Chaplin and Broadhead have good goal returns there playing for poor sides.

I'm not sure many of us will settle for 21st, that would be disappointing for me (although clearly not 'sack the manager' territory)
Somewhere between 15th and 10th I think qualifies as 'satisfactory'
Just outside the playoffs = solid effort.

So long as it isn't used as a stick to beat the owners, manager, coaching staff and players with if we don't achieve it, there is nothing wrong with hoping for a play-off chase. However, a good solid season showing we can compete in this division and potentially build to a promotion challenge the following season is realistic. | |
