The 'Complete' British summer of sport 11:44 - Jul 14 with 4452 viewshatch

I've found myself going to a lot of sporting events recently and it has got me thinking about what I would need to attend to say 'British sporting summer? Completed it mate' or whatever the kids say these days.

My summer has or will include:

Royal Ascot
Henley Regatta
Lords Ashes
British Grand Prix
Wimbledon
t20 Finals Day
The Open Golf
Old Trafford Ashes
Oval Ashes

What is missing from the classics? Crucible is not summer (and is boring as hell), Women's Ashes perhaps? Athletics? British Speedway Grand Prix?

I'm conscious this comes across as a sporting brag but it's only having gone to a few of these recently that it got me and some of my friends debating in the pub last night what would be the 'grand slam' of british sporting major events.

I wouldn't include all of yours in a 'classic' list, something more like:

- Wimbledon
- British Grand Prix
- Lord's Test match
- Open Golf
- Royal Ascot

Henley is not about the sport so shouldn't count and I think a 'classic' list only has one event per sport.. I still think there's probably one event missing from my list though.....

That's fair.

Others out of season include the London Marathon, Boat Race, Grand National etc but in terms of Summer I think you've probably summed it up there.

TT may be a push but I can certainly try squeeze in Cowes and the Tour of Britain to complete the set.

Probably wouldn't make a 'classics' list, but the sevens at Twickenham is a fantastic couple of days of sport and a great experience. Think it was May this year.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I'd like to see those so-called 'sportsman' sink a dozen pints then race their bikes like darts players do.

According to The Sloaney magazine's online guide "Sloaney Season", it starts with Cheltenham Festival (March), and includes the Grand National (April), The Boat Race (April), Badminton Horse Trials (May), Chelsea Flower Show (May), Epsom Derby (June), Royal Ascot (June), Test matches at Lord's (July), Wimbledon (July), Henley Royal Regatta (July), Edinburgh International Festival (August) and others, ending with Goodwood Revival (September). Not all of these are sports, of course. I would add The Open (golf) to the list & any cycling at the London Velodrome could be interesting.
The "London season" was what helped form the old Stock Exchange adage of "Sell in May and go away...and don't return until St Leger Day". Not everyone knows the second part, but the logic was that the major players were otherwise occupied by "the season" between May & September & so there was no likelihood of the stock market rising.

If the Chelsea flower show is on their list I’m surprised it doesn’t include Glastonbury and Glyndebourne - and no Sloaney list would be complete without a pukka or two
