What an absolutely pointless friendly 20:40 - Jul 19 with 3487 views | Asa | Cannot understand the point of playing a team in the same division. How many times did we hear this? Well perhaps McKenna yet again has played a blinder. Going to a difficult Championship side and absolutely playing them off the pitch, creating chance after chance and showing the players why they should be massively confident may be yet again the perfect decision from the man in charge. We've looked excellent, could have been 5 or 6 ahead against a side that was around the playoffs for long periods last year. Great stuff. As I say that they've pulled one back, but the point remains whatever happens. For 80 minutes we've played some great stuff, created chances and only been a bit of rustiness away from battering them. What an absolutely pointless friendly on 20:51 - Jul 19 with 3170 views | the_toff | They’re a solid, mid table championship outfit over recent seasons and was always going to be a good test of where we’re at. Only so much can be read into a friendly game, but unless I’ve missed it I didn’t see anyone saying it was pointless, quite the opposite.
What an absolutely pointless friendly on 20:55 - Jul 19 with 3071 views | Swansea_Blue | It’s certainly not pointless (no game is pre-season), but it’s a surprise to be playing a team in the same league. I bet that doesn’t happen very often.

Eh? Same reason. Plus they didn't have to travel. The travel was part of McKenas master plan. Not just playing local. Love his detail. It's a small thing....but he's thinking. I can't help feeling McKenna is the best thing to happen to us since Robson. We have to enjoy him while we can!!

A quick look at their forum would indicate several of their fans think they will struggle this season and losing patience with Ryan Lowe. I think there's worse clubs in the Championship that look ripe for relegation but we shall see.

What an absolutely pointless friendly on 22:33 - Jul 19 with 2477 views | unstableblue | I think it was an inspired friendly choice Pitting ourselves against a mid table champ side… Confidence lift of seeing that we can easily match that level Nice step up from previous friendlies and able to increase the intensity and go for it Key strikers increasing confidence with goals against Championship defence Some outer oppositions Saturday to further cement the patterns of play and get some further set plan defensive tests… then a tough challenge of Luton Hats off to McKenna

What an absolutely pointless friendly on 22:45 - Jul 19 with 2403 views | wkj | I would agree if we were playing Preston having been in the Championship with them for the previous season - but if you ask me it's REALLY important for the players with no/limited Championship experience to play against a team like this on the back or promotion. It isn't a wowee tie, but surely a good fitness and confidence booster that a potential loss against West Ham might not have brought [Post edited 19 Jul 2023 22:46]

What an absolutely pointless friendly on 23:02 - Jul 19 with 2292 views | Mach_foreignBlue | It turned out to be a very good friendly as we could see what we are capable of against midtable opposition. Largely dominant, pleasing evening at Deepdale.

It happens a lot, with the number of these mini-tournaments/exhibition matches around the world, often get a couple or so premier league teams facing each other on the billing.

What an absolutely pointless friendly on 11:26 - Jul 20 with 1534 views | GeoffSentence | On the PNE forum there were one or two people posting that we had requested the friendly for matchday experience of a long away game in the championship. That alone would seem to be reasonably pointed, plus it was a good workout against an established club at the level we will be playing at.

Yes, good point. Mini tournaments often throw up same league clashes. I was thinking about one off games similar to last night's but it's all the same innit. Presumably Leipzig and Werder Bremen will be playing each other before we win the Innsbruck Cup later in pre-season.

Probably speaks volume to the calibre of people I follow on social media but had seen quite a few moaning about how pointless a match it was. After a very pleasing win, it now looks like an excellent move by all concerned. So many positives to take from it.
