Hope he’s ok and enjoying the superb start to the season. Always enjoyed their posts but can’t recall seeing anything since last season?

I noticed they had gone a little while ago and assumed it was to avoid transfer silly season! Hope Clive is doing well and returns soon

Hi all,

Hopefully not 'look at me', certainly not intentionally, I just wanted to wish everyone on here all the best over the coming weeks, which will no doubt be challenging. Goodness knows what they'll bring, but I know if people stick together and look out for one another it'll be a damn sight easier to handle. This place is a great outlet for that and a wonderful resource for Town fans and non to come together, keep up the great work.

Everyone needs to remember that it's perfectly acceptable not to agree on things, it doesn't make someone a bad person.

I, like many, have found recent days tough, and I can sense when I'm not the best version of myself. I'm going to take a little social media hiatus but I'll be back when the football returns.

All the best to you all in the meantime.

Anyway if you see this CB hope life is treating you well.

Edit: Just noted that post was from 2020. They were posting last season. Probably taken another break but hope they are ok

Yeah and that's great, but this is not the first time we've had the exact same passive aggressive nonsense about me trying to be inclusive when I don't know. Just smacks of stirring to me, but there we are.

It's all a bit odd.

I have got into the habit of using they/them for all sorts of practical reasons.

Speaking as a former Parliamentary drafter (note drafter not draftsman), gender-neutral drafting has been used for some time in legislation, and predates current controversies about gender identity and the like.

In legal writing, masculine language has traditionally been used to refer to people regardless of their gender. Examples include the use of masculine pronouns (he/him) and nouns such as chairman.

The practice for legislation changed in 2007, and in fact pre-dated that in the office I worked in. Since then, it has been government policy to write legislation in gender-neutral language.

If you are interested, the following s a link to guidance on gender-neutral drafting which includes three basic ways to avoid gender-specific pronouns, which are illustrated with examples:.

repeat the noun (for example, “a person is entitled to a benefit if the person...”);

change the pronoun (for example, by using “they” or “their” in the singular: “a person fails to comply with their duty...”);

rewrite to avoid the need for a pronoun (for example, “It is an offence for a person to...”, rather than “A person commits an offence if he...”).

https://7a21077a.flowpaper.com/GuidetoGenderNeutralDrafting/#page=1

So if it government policy requires the use of terms such as "they" in legislation, it's perfectly acceptable for someone to use them on TWTD. Indeed to object would seem to me to amount to a form of cancel culture.

when sex is unknown or the use is intended to be inclusive of both sexes, legislation seems the perfect example, the singular use of they etc seems absolutely uncontroversial to me. also if you know it's what someone wants - since ignoring what someone wants when referring to them would be impolite. but using it as a default, which I don't think is the case on this thread, is a bit ugly.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

And you are entitled to that view, just as much as the person using the term "they" is entitled to use that term.

I suppose my argument is live and let live, and let's not get bogged down in culture wars which the right use for political reasons.

The latest example is an article in the Telegraph where Kemi Badenoch is arguing for a ban on gender-neutral toilets in public places.

I have been to several places recently with gender-neutral toilets, especially restaurants with very little space. I didn't bat an eye-lid, and can't really see how they're can be a safety issue given they can be locked.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/13/gender-neutral-lavatories-are-an-inv

And is she seriously suggesting separate toilets on trains, or the removal of those Dr Who like single toilets you see around Leicester Square, or the removal of any toilet where there is not space for another?

EDIT: when it comes to culture wars, even the Telegraph appears to have picked up on the nonsense of the following, which is clear cancel culture, something the left is often accused of.

We exchanged some friendly PMs last summer, he said he was OK & had moved 7 months previously to a house with a larger plot for veg growing.

Then same again a few months later in Dec. '22. He wasn't happy with certain aspects of the forum, incl. a couple of people posting on it.

Greatly miss him, he was a top poster. I do hope he's well and enjoying his new garden 👍

i'm not sure how my comment is "bogged down in culture wars"? very strange.

i think there needs to be a new internet law to match godwin's law - the first person to use the phase 'culture war' is always the person fighting the 'culture war'.

is she actually arguing for a 'ban' on gender-neutral toilets? i thought she was saying that new public buildings needed to include sex segregated toilets as well as anything else they may provide - a positive duty to include rather than any ban. the examples you give of single cubicles seem entirely right as they are and I'm sure she's not proposing to change trains etc.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
