Good this, from the Yorkshire Post 15:35 - Oct 31 with 3490 views | Illinoisblue | When a multi-millionaire is begging for £2m, when a Saudi prince cannot give Sheffield United a competitive budget in England's top division or even sell them, when an Italian businessman has to sell Leeds United to a disparate consortium of American businessman and sports stars because he "doesn’t have the wealth to compete in the Premier League", where Championship-level gates are not enough to make Bradford City League Two's richest club and when one with York City's history cannot throw its weight around in the Conference at the same time the Premier League is discussing how much more it can wring out of its next television deal beyond the £5bn it made from the last one, something is seriously wrong.

Maybe it's now having a long look into its own gaping chasm that it seems intent on stretching until only a handful of clubs are ever going to be financially viable. Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 16:09 - Oct 31 with 3273 views | ClareBlue | Well thankfully world cup 2034 will be going to the House of Saudi. I know this because the bid process has been brought forward 3 years, the essential requirements of 7 stadia at bid changed to 4, the bizarre split continental up coming world cup ruling out any bid except from Asia and Oceania and the only viable Oceania pulling out for some reason, no very clear. The ruling body of our game giving 26 days for a country to prepare a bid for a multi billion revenue event obviously set challenges. Fortunately the House of Saudi could meet all these challenges and be endorsed by the Asian federation the day after their bid. Without anyone knowing any details of it, we just know it is the best. How? Because we have been told it is. So the future's bright and in safe hands for our game, whatever franchise you support.
Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 16:22 - Oct 31 with 3205 views | Guthrum | One wonders how even Sky find this viable. A £5bn deal represents about a third of the company's entire turnover. The Prem can only consider such a sum because there are those willing to pay.

Can I still watch the itfc games when we're on sky? I promise not to watch any others though. Its just that were doing quite well ATM.

The £5bn deal is not solely with Sky - it's the total including the Amazon and BT Sport (now presumably TNT) elements over a few years. However Sky has also agreed to pay £935m for the latest EFL deal which will begin in 2024-25 and run to the end of the 2028-29 season so they're still paying a huge chunk for 'football'. The overall point is valid - surely this can't carry on but we've been saying that for ages.

I was all for a boycott at the end of Mccarthy through to the end of Lambert, but I'm not boycotting now ffs.

Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 17:36 - Oct 31 with 2868 views | Daninthecampo | This is happening across all the leagues in the world(barring Saudi) the owners are greedy so I don't understand why a max transfer and salary cap aren't introduced globally, the players won't like it but they'll have no choice but still br earning large salaries. Then we won't be in the stupid situation we're all in now and the cost of football should go down for the clubs and fans, the bigger clubs will always have more fans and sell more merchandise so will still have the upper hand. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 17:53 - Oct 31 with 2794 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | But perhaps the strangest part is that despite being awash with money, very few clubs are actually profitable. Even Sky TV’s margin isn’t huge given their revenue. The only winners in this seem to be the players since so many obscenely rich owners are happy to p1ss away their money for their own vanity (or possible sports washing and/or writing off tax). P.s This thread is an Elephants’ dream…

All the more reason to boycott.

He's right about struggling football clubs in a county which once finished 7th in the Olympic medal table!

I’d agree with that. It has its moments - but the YP is a cut above any other daily newspaper - local or national - in my opinion.

So many average and ordinary players (and their vile blood sucking agents) getting very very rich from the game. How will that cycle of greed ever be broken?

Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 19:25 - Oct 31 with 2524 views | Radlett_blue | Football is the world's #1 game & the PL has become hugely rich because it's the most popular league. So everyone associated with the game - players, managers, administrators & even the despised agents - are all getting richer as well. It's all about TV money & the public want to see the big clubs & the world's best known players. The problem with the lower league clubs is that they all overspend, in an attempt to climb the ladder & obviously only a few will succeed.

Hands up, I piggy back off my son’s Sky subscription so I don’t pay them! I often turn the game off, not that entertaining. Sky ruined football, parachute payments to reward failure? Spend a fortune in the Champioship in the hope you’ll reach the promised land and then sell the club.

those vastly overpaid players say the right things and we (the fans) just lap it up.
Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 22:17 - Oct 31 with 2190 views | brazil1982 | There should be enough wealth in the PL to run a club efficiently. Unfortunately most of that wealth goes on wages and agent fees. More income simply means higher wages and fees. It's bizarre.
Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 22:22 - Oct 31 with 2165 views | ArnieM | The best thing that could happen to football in this country is gif the PL to be disbanded and consigned to wheelie bin and gif the so called big 5 to sod off to done super league in Europe never to be seen again. We honestly wouldn’t miss it, or the hideously overpaid, so called, super stars. PL Is corrupt and morally bankrupt, and Sky tv money is everything to do with. I hope Sky pisses off too.

Good this, from the Yorkshire Post on 22:52 - Oct 31 with 2100 views | Swansea_Blue | It’s perversely wrong, but ultimately we fuel it. We create the demand that allows it to happen. I suppose the better way to phrase that is we’re the ones being exploited through the massive broadcast deals, but they won’t care about that. It’s just about how much cash can be extracted from us and sponsors. We feed each other. And then the global game makes it a case of keeping up with the Joneses, so I’ve no idea if there’s a fix. There probably isn’t as long as the demand is there.

Not by the editor, but their Bradford City match reports are the best match reports I've read in any newspaper in recent years. Well-informed and informative, and explain what happened to people who didn't actually see the game. Kind of like Daily Telegraph football reporting many years ago.
