Harry Kane 11:08 - Jul 7 with 5109 viewstextbackup

I’ve watched all the games so far at home with a clear head, no beers to cloud judgement.

Hes been sht. Hardly any energy about his play, closing down slowly or not at all, sitting in CM for large parts of the games.

If Hirst put in a few shifts like that I’d be seriously pissed off.

I really hope Toney gets a chance in the semi, but obviously GS won’t drop his captain.

My mates and I all say the exactly the same, lethargic performances at best,
Won't be but should be dropped or at least subbed earlier,

He looks properly knackered if he’s not injured, not even really busting a gut to get himself in the box.

Thought we might have seen Toney a lot earlier yesterday but guess it worked out in the end.

He reminded me of Douglas in that clip against Newcastle.

He’s not fit. Got a back injury and needed injections to play the champions league semi. He has previous declaring himself fit for big games when he clearly isn’t.

I would start Watkins against Netherlands I think his pace could be more beneficial against their huge defenders of De Ligt and Van Dijk. Kane can come on after an hour and still maybe make the difference.

It should be seen as rotating your squad rather than dropping players, but as he hasn't been doing that it'll be seen as Kane dropped

Totally agree. Said during last nights game that Southgate should pull him off (Not literally of course) Seems unable to beat a defender in the air. Partly agree with Shearer that if we are knocking long balls up to him then he needs someone else near him otherwise it comes straight back. Think we should try someone else up front and in no way does it work having Saka one side with nobody able to cross from the other side.

I suppose the fact that he's got 2 goals reminds us that he's always capable of popping up with one, which may prove crucial in a tight knockout game.

But yes, that's a silver lining, and I very much agree on the cloud itself.

For those of us old enough to remember the last Euros in Germany in 88 (I went to the England games and final that tournament), it’s reminiscent of how Gary Lineker performed after which we found out he had been carrying an illness (glandular fever I think).

The difference thankfully 36 years on is that England have so much strength in depth these days compared to then. England supporters today don’t know how lucky they are!!!

Not a chance of Kane being left out! Toney only got on last night because Kane fell into that cooler box and hurt his leg.

That, and what touches he has had (those which have come to him by chance rather than any effort) have been pretty piss poor on the whole as well - he's given the ball away when one of his two main roles is to hold it up and lay it off well. Liability at the moment, like playing with ten men.

He doesn’t look fit but Southgate won’t drop him.

Some players need saving from themselves.

I’m fully expecting him to come out in a few months’ time and announce he wasn’t fully fit but didn’t want to let the country down.

Yeah, I would start Toney, but so hard to leave Kane on the bench. Can't see Southgate dropping him. I think he will go back to a 4-2-3-1 of
Pickford
Walker, Stones, Guehi, Shaw
Rice, Mainoo
Saka, Bellingham, Foden
Kane

I would go with
Pickford
Walker, Stones, Guehi, Shaw
Rice, Bellingham, Mainoo
Saka, Toney, Palmer

Yeah he's been terrible. Can't keep up with play. Can't stretch play. Can't press. Southgate taking him off with 10 mins to go almost blew my mind, because how did he last 110 mins playing like that if not to be nursed to penalties? Surely that was the plan and it just got to the stage where he couldn't even walk anymore. If the miracle happens and a goalscoring chance falls at his feet though..

Gareth will continue setting them up to give away as little as possible, and brick walls like Harry in the centre and nobody on the left probably help in this regard. Keep it compact, no overcommitting. Hopefully we won't need to score in the first 90' but if we do, there's enough individual quality at the top end to feel like you've bought a few tickets in the raffle. To be fair to Gareth, we have given up the least chances in the tournament I believe with his setup. That we've created close to the least chances in the tournament as well isn't the focus.

There was a moment in that Swiss games that's summed up his performances. Saka beats his man down the wing, looks to put a ball across six yard box and Kane is behind the penalty spot with a complete lack of dynamic movement.

It’s confusing, he looked decent against Serbia when he came on but not seen since, I would play him over Kane

The bit that done it for me was him being at CB, then RB clearing the ball up to…. Where he should have been.

Such a wasted opportunity for Toney or Watkins

Hepatitis? And didn't he soil himself against Ireland?

I realise that Kane has had a very good season in Germany, but his England performances seem to have gone the other way. The only time he really got into the box was the goal against Slovakia.

He doesn’t seem to be helping at the moment. I’m sure Southgate will stick with him in case he manages to have a moment, but it makes you wonder what we’re missing be excluding more mobile strikers.

He’s letting the country down by selfishly playing when every single person can clearly see he’s struggling.

It’s like playing with 10 men

If his name wasn't Harry Kane, he'd never play for England again after that last performance.

It is all a bit of a mystery.

In an optimistic moment I find myself imagining that GS decides that Kane landing in the dugout is the excuse he needs to make his customary one change to the team by swapping Kane out for Toney or Watkins.

But in reality there is no chance of that. It is clear that GS feels Kane needs to fulfil two roles: 1. to be there for the flag exchange and kick off, and 2. to be on the field at the end as we try and grind out a draw and get to penalties. Which means he then spends 2 hours trying not to over-exert himself.

He's not been great, but he definitely doesn't look fit.

However................an unpopular opinion is that you can stick one of the other 2 up there, they'll still not be good as the service is not very good.

Toney came on for 12-15 mins and touched the ball once? (before penalties)

I dunno… there were many times I saw him half heartedly jump, or in most cases wasn’t ahead of the rest of the team to make himself a decent option to pass to.

Watkins could cause the Dutch defence issues, a half fit Kane will play into their hands, and VVD will look like prime Jaap Stam

Kane in this tournament has been England's version of Ronaldo, a once great player but now woefully off the pace but apparently undroppable.
