Breaking a journey to Scotland from London 23:03 - Jul 24 with 2246 viewsCharlie_pl_baxter

I need some advice from the hive mind. We are driving up to Scotland for a holiday this summer and looking for somewhere to break the journey on the way back. Also trying to find somewhere nice but affordable to stay on the way up. Any suggestions?

Poll: We recruit two strikers, one has to be Bonne or Wickham, who would you have?

If you are going to head for the A14, then I'd say Wetherby and Scotts Corner services are the obvious stop offs, but as for staying over, maybe find somewhere nice like York or Harrowgate?

York is expensive but Harrogate is ok with plenty of places to eat and drink. Further up the A1 Richmond might be an option

Just had a thought - there’s a Town fan who used to live down here in the SW who now has a B&B in Hutton-Le-Hole in North Yorks. His name is Gareth but not sure of the B&B name. Think I’m right that he does special rates for Town fans but then again I might have made that up!

Which part of Scotland as that might determine where would be a good stopping point?

As a kid when we used to drive up to the west coast from Ipswich as a family we always used to stop at the Royal Oak in Appleby, for some reason, so I have fond memories of it. Pretty little town albeit best avoided the week of the annual horse fair unless you want a slightly livelier experience https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appleby_Horse_Fair

Are you coming up the M6 or A1(M)? Also, as BlueinBrum has said, where you are going in Scotland would determine the best halfway stopover.

We're currently staying in an Airbnb in Eyam (known as The Plague Town) just north of Bakewell, which is nice... or anywhere in the Peak District if you like beautiful scenery/walks/caves.

We went to Scotland a couple of years ago for a summer holiday. It rained. Temperature one day reached a maximum of 9C.
Hope yours is better.....

You should watch the new take on The Decameron while you are there, just to go full meta.

I have no idea what that is or where I should watch it!

I would recommend A1 then A66 for a more interesting journey, then depending on where in Scotland you are heading, stop off in Carlisle, Keswick or Annan. Largs is nice but is a further up the West coast, but handy for a trip to the Isle of Arran.

Try Durham - it’s very small for a cathedral town (city?) but very beautiful and walkable centre

Depends how far north in Scotland you are going. I used to stop in Ripon when holidaying in the south of the country. Any further north to the highlands or beyond, it was in the Newcastle area.

Initially south west then across to Livingston then back to London. Probably going up the west coast so M6.

Whitley Bay if you are going up the A1. You can release your inner Viking on Holy Island and pick up some craster kippers as a breakfast treat whilst reliving El CID in the guise of Christopher Teace from Blue Peter riding his horse from Bamburgh Castle.

You didn’t say where you are going…. Scotland is a big place. Stirling or Bridge of Allan are good stop off en route to the midge filled Highlands and Islands.

I'd say Lake District or Peak district depending on how far you want to drive before stopping over. Cumbria borders SW Scotland so you're practically there already if you stop off in Cumbria. Grasmere, Ambleside or Keswick all give good access to the central lakes if you do opt for Lake District.
