And have so few players we have a trialist on the bench.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Or: have a Premier League experienced International available on a free, and have an opportunity to take a look at him in action against credible opposition.

Yes, it's totally out of the norm for trialists to be involved in preseason friendlies!
Against Sudbury in July prepping for the Championship, absolutely.

No issue with a trialist but the weakness in the forward positions is worrying, we’re far weaker there than at the end of last season and still would be if Hirst and Broadhead were fit.
Jackson, Sarmiento and Moore out and only Delap in. Even if Johnson can play midfield we’re still down numerically. Central midfield is even worse, lost Travis who played regularly and Ball who didn’t but McK clearly trusted.
I keep remembering Sheffield United started last season weaker than the one before and it cost them massively. We still have time but need players in very soon.

Agree although it's quite a late friendly to be having a look in fairness. Looks decent pedigree so why wouldn't we.
I think Ashton is running the club responsibly and rather than paying silly money/big risk territory then we might make a more pragmatic signing like this.
They were talking about Jordan James on five live earlier and that he'll be worth a lot after 1-2 seasons. Really feels like one we should have pushed for at £5 million but maybe we did....
It's looked OK. Apart from midfield. Need an agile cm who can get past a man when he's dropping deep for the ball. Morsy keeps having to sort out luongo errors with the ball.

It’s amazing the absolute denial on here from some people.
I'm not in denial, we need more bodies 100% but having a trialist on the bench for a friendly that is being played for 45+45+22.5+22.5 minutes in no way makes that point. You could prove the point better by highlighting that we've got a few youngsters on the bench but even that is not totally unexpected for a friendly!

Agree, it’s going to need miraculous performances to take 1 point from the first two games. Morsy and Luongo are going to have to play out of their skins we should have integrated a central midfielder by now. It seems to me that Ashton has too much on his plate what with all the stadium upgrades. It’s just basically Werhun and him doing the entire recruitment. We don’t have any presence in the European or World markets. Hope I’ve got this all wrong.

So your take is that Ashton has been too busy with the stadium to get involved with the recruitment. That he’s got his priorities wrong focussing on bricks and mortar.
Do you have any evidence for that or are you just putting two and two together? I’d be interested to hear it because I’ve seen nothing but speculation on who we are interested in.
We are the weakest financially of the PL clubs. But we still have money and every club is playing hard ball with us on transfer targets. We have a choice. Patience and wait for the right people or buy anyone and everyone for mad money? Result of the latter potentially? relegation, financial rules broken, no money. In other words, a worse situation.
We are a bit between a rock and a hard place. We need to be very careful who we bring in and for what. Of course we don’t have any presence in world transfer markets. We’ve hardly got a presence in this country thanks to idiot Evans. All these things take time. That we’ve been promoted earlier than expected is a blessing and a risk.
Regardless, after over three years, we have every reason to trust Ashton and the decision makers at the club to make the best decisions given what’s available to us.
I for one am laid back about it. Saddened we’ve lost two key players for so long and that the squad looks light at the moment, but a bit of patience and getting behind the club and team (not happy clapping) and we might surprise the damp bedsheet brigade and others.
I suspect we will see a new arrival or two plus a couple of loans before the end of the month.

Pathetic
Don’t understand this. We have 2 central midfielders 1 centre forward and no left winger. Incredible position to be in one week out.

The pant wetting is equally amazing tbh.
I’m a bit confused as to where the ‘pAnT WeTtInG’ is to be honest?
It’s people, rightly concerned, that the squad doesn’t seem to be where it needs/should be going in to our biggest season in 20+ odd years. Maybe Steve_M put it more eloquently than I ever could above, but he’s bang on.
We was short going in to the summer, even more so when Broadhead and Hirst then got injured and still find ourselves with only Delap in the door as a forward option.
But hey, I’ll go bury my hand in the sand and pretend it’s all okay.

Pant wetting seems to be the go to phrase for people who want to moan about other posters but can be arsed to, or can’t explain why.
I don’t see any evidence of said ‘pant wetting’ either.

Yeah not good that our left forwards today were Harness and Ladapo (plus Ayinde I guess). They both did ok but can't escape the fact we'd look more assured in that part of the pitch if a better player was playing there instead.
Wouldn't surprise me if Omari started on the left next week with Chaplin and Burns to his right behind Delap but that leaves Harness, Ladapo, possibly Taylor and Al-Hamadi if he's fit enough in reserve as senior players. That's pretty ropey.
Have to admit the Sheff Utd comparison has entered my mind this week as well. Without wanting to get into 'free hit' territory we're perhaps fortunate that our first two games aren't ones where we'd be significantly better off with a more reinforced squad anyway - it buys us a little more time perhaps but we need to get on with things or this league will leave us behind very quickly.
Obviously difficult to build a squad capable of competing in the Prem in a window, especially with a team that's come flying up from 2 divisions below, but it's fairly clear McKenna is frustrated at the lack of progress and well he should be to be honest.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

This.
I don’t think anyone is naive enough to think we would be done and ready to go by game one. But I do find the fact that we don’t have a Centre Midfielder signed yet is a big surprise given just how important that position is.
Injuries have been an issue tbf and we would have Hirst and Delap, now it’s just Delap. We are just incredibly light and it’s not bed wetting or whatever people say to have concerns about that. McKenna said it himself many times.

No, but he is a lot more realistic regarding signings about needing to look longer term rather than just the next 10 days that some fans are.

I expect us to go with a back three next week, with the players we have at our disposal. Maybe Burns could start from the bench, with Hutchinson and Chaplin as two number tens.

You’ve just changed the words I said to new words, so no I meant the words I said, not the new ones you attributed to me. e.g. no I didn’t say he has his priorities wrong, I’m saying there are so many hours 1 person can work and it’s too much for one person, we needed that new head of recruitment. He’s also taken over the chairman’s role don’t forget.
