‘We’re evicting our 90-year-old tenant because of Labour’ 15:54 - Dec 19 with 6528 views | giant_stow | https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/property/buy-to-let/evicting-90-year-old-tenan (various paywall removers avaialable) It turns out that this couple *had* to evict a 90 year old because Labour *might* have made them pay an extra 11 grand tax. They bought for £164,000 and sold at £425,000. This was all Labour's fault. Remember that everyone - Labour's fault.

‘We’re evicting our 90-year-old tenant because of Labour’ on 16:42 - Dec 19 with 3969 views | The_Flashing_Smile | Reminds me, I bumped into an old neighbour recently who was moaning her disability benefits have only gone up a small amount (like £5 a month or something, which I agreed was ridiculous). And then she starts moaning about Labour putting up the tax on second and third homes, which is even worse for her and her husband as they're in London... So let's get this straight... they have THREE homes, all of which are IN LONDON, and she's moaning about the tax and not enough of a rise on HER BENEFITS. A lot of people can't afford one home in London (and I'm struggling with the mortgage myself at the moment) let alone 3... and she's also claiming benefits! Funny thing is she's a sweet woman, bit older than me, and talked like she had no idea she was in the wrong and wasn't being hard done by. Astonishing.

‘We’re evicting our 90-year-old tenant because of Labour’ on 16:57 - Dec 19 with 3829 views | flykickingbybgunn | As I read it the owners of the house were afraid that they would not be able to sell that house that they were using as a pension fund because of new laws restricting ""No fault" evictions. Meaning that giving tenants reasonable time, say 6 months, would not be enough to comply with the law. There can be no surprise that restricting the profitability or flexibility of renting out your house will result in fewer people doing it. As a result rental costs are going up. An appaling thing at a time when imigration is not being restricted and living accomodation is at a premium.

Today's Mirror main headline is "We Have Been Betrayed" about the WASPI women. And your second sentence is hyperbole. As it is, the Telegraph used to be a decent, Conservative newspaper and it didn't taint its news stories with undue political bias. These days it is an unthinking mouthpiece for the Tories and Reform, and no longer a serious newspaper.

It's actually mind-boggling that such an article exists, even allowing for the Telegraph's political slant. It's so revealing as an insight into some peoples' mindsets, while actually being a powerful argument against the sort of politics that that paper stands for.

There was a Tory Bill doing the same but it fell because of the general election, and Labour took it up. Here's a link to it. https://bills.parliament.uk/publications/55325/documents/4782 [Post edited 19 Dec 2024 17:09]

The Telegraph is on steroids. They had an article saying Labour were going to force pubs to close earlier, “Pubs could be forced to shut early in new Labour nanny state blow” “Crackdown on drinking under consideration as ‘fun police’ Government sets out plan to improve health and tackle anti-social behaviour” All,this despite including A Department for Health spokesman said: “It is categorically untrue that the Government is considering changing alcohol licensing hours.”

Think the Telegraph used to be one of those publications (like the Economist and the Financial Times) that imagined their readership to be such ruling class conservatives by nature that it was often unnecessary to propagandise them. You could inform them what was going on in the world in fairly unvarnished ways and rely on them not to draw any unwanted conclusions. These days though the same class out of people seem to want a sweet hit of anger with every story, so its journalism has gone into fairly steep decline.

I might be wrong as I haven't read the small print yet, but I thought the issue wasn't "giving tenants reasonable time, say 6 months", but that once tenants had signed a Tenancy Agreement, they had in effect a right to stay permanently unless the landlord either went through lengthy court proceedings, or could show that they needed the property for themselves or a member of their family. For many landlords (not saying all) that's a far bigger issue than profitability, esp when it comes to the possibility of having nightmare (anti-social, refusing to pay rent etc.) tenants on your doorstep.

I love the Private Eye spoof character, Sir Hubert Gusset, who is always writing to the Telegraph. Here is an example. SIR – Recent weeks have seen speculation that the actor Idris Elba might be selected to play the next James Bond. As various commentators have correctly pointed out, it is simply ridiculous to suggest that James Bond could be played by a black man. In Fleming's books it is quite clear that Bond is a Scottish milkman called Sean (Rough Diamonds Are Forever, p94). To recast Bond as a member of an ethnic minority is quite simply unrealistic and I suggest the producers forget about such fanciful politically correct gimmicks and return to the stark realism of the early Bond films, in which Bond nearly has his genitals cut off by a laser, or turns a car into a plane, or goes to space, or uses an ejector seat to throw villains from his Aston Martin, or defuses a nuclear bomb in thirty seconds, or has an invisible car, or arrives on a beach with a tuxedo on under his wetsuit, or defeats an entire base of heavily armed men, armed with nothing more than a pencil. To turn Bond into a black man completely defeats the hard work the filmmakers have done to make him a plausible, nuanced and three dimensional character. As that well known socialist Michael Gove said at the time the Bill was introduced 'Our new laws introduced to Parliament today will support the vast majority of responsible landlords who provide quality homes to their tenants, while delivering our manifesto commitment to abolish Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions. This will ensure that everyone can live somewhere which is decent, safe and secure – a place they’re truly proud to call home.” So naturally it's all Labours fault.

i used to subscribe to the DT because it was good quality journalism and gave a different view point from many of my other sources of news. Some time around 2016 it became a rabid, frothing mouthpiece for the tory party so I dropped it. If it has changed since it just seems to have become worse. political objectivity is a thing of the past.

I came across this letter to the Guardian in connection with the death of John Sessions. John Sessions did not act on stage between 1994 and 2013, but for many of those years and beyond he took part in the annual Private Eye performance at the National Theatre. This was a reading-out of Eye sketches from the preceding 12 months, chaired by Ian Hislop and performed, usually, by Sessions, Harry Enfield, Jan Ravens and Lewis MacLeod. The last item of the evening was always one of that legendary old buffer Sir Herbert Gussett’s furious letters to the Daily Telegraph. In rehearsal it all went smoothly enough, but in performance Sessions did not just milk each joke, he creamed and yoghurted it. It was ridiculous, it was over the top and it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Each year, when Hislop announced Sir Herbert Gussett, there was a rumble of excited anticipation from regular attendees, and some of us could not help starting to laugh before Sessions had said a single word.

You’re totally correct on this. Most landlords just want to make a reasonable return and be good to their tenants, but this potentially puts them in a very difficult position with absolutely no flexibility. Unfortunately this will mean private rents will go up steeply for what is remaining.
