Nothing really changes from last night 07:31 - Jan 17 with 2277 viewsDubtractor

I was as despondent as I've been for a while in the aftermath of last night's game. That second half performance was limp from us, and Brighton utterly controlled the game after the first goal, but reflecting on it the morning after I don't think it changes much.

I think a few of us (me included) have probably got a bit carried away by the last 2 league results and performances. The reality is that most teams in the league will be better than us if they are on their game, and we're not completely on ours, which we weren't last night. We are still in a real scrap to stay up, and have a decent chance of doing so, but we will almost certainly lose more games than we win.

We need to dust ourselves off, hopefully get a couple more reinforcements this month, and keep positive for the rest of the season. Scoring enough goals is still very much the challenge for us, and having a few injuries in the forward positions really isn't helping at the moment as it limits options, so hopefully a few returning players adding to some transfer business will see us right.

The performance rather than the result was the main disappointment, and we really need to be getting at least a point from these sort of home games.

That performance / result wint help our recruitment as it slightly changes the outside narrative.

The performance was good for 60 mins, the reaction to their goal was poor. It doesn't help having a lack of bench options in all honesty. We're just not able to change the game from the bench unfortunately

I completely agree, I've mentioned before I struggle to absorb the defeats, after the last couple of years it's hard to get into the mindset to accept that we're going to lose more matches than we win.

I've also mentioned before that it matters not how we get to the 35ish points that will be required. We've shown already that we can get the results against any opposition. We need to stop going into games looking at the opposition and expecting a result based on their position/form. Taking points from our rivals makes our life easier but it's not the be-all and end-all, we can still get to the same total by getting our points from other games.

One thing IS for sure, this season is another roller-coaster for the emotions, for the 3rd time on the trot!

We’re actually better off than we were going into this round of matches, we are only in the bottom three on goals scored now, rather than goal difference.

Yep. That middle paragraph is spot on. People seemed to be getting a little carried away before the match. We have to battle our tits off for every single point, as there are no easy teams in this league. So what if Brighton hadn’t won in 8? For us that’s a meaningless stat. They’re clearly a stronger and more experienced group than us and no mugs. They’d held Arsenal and Chelsea in the previous 2 games. We’ve barely troubled them in 2 games now (although we played better at their place).

Lack of Szmodics and Chaplin from the bench limited the options. We could easily have been going in 1-0 or even 2-0 up at half time, I think we forced their keeper into more saves in the first 45 but threat might be my memory failing. I also think that McKenna was very conscious of City on Sunday and the need to save Morsy and Cajuste, hence holding Morsy back and taking off Cajuste when Phillips took the knock.

Not sure - did we play better at theirs? They over ran us for the most part and we held on for what was probably an underserved point.

Up to the hour mark yesterday, a point was the least we deserved.

Having seen the goals again this morning, I think we were really unlucky. We were the better side first half, yes Brighton had about 60% possession but they never looked like hurting us, where as we created several good situations and had 3 or 4 good shots on target.

The first goal definitely changed the game but the margins are so tiny, if Greaves gets a bit more on it, if the shot doesn't go through Davis' feet Walton saves comfortably...

We didn't just compete and contest the game last night, we were the more likely team to score for about an hour and the game was really there for us. I think that is significant progress from where we were just a couple of games ago and our control of the game has matured so much.

Whether or not we can start picking up results more regularly remains to be seen, but it's easy to be disappointed by the result and lose sight of how far we have come. I honestly feel we are now a stronger side than our league position suggests.

A bit more resilient maybe? I could be clutching at straws

You only had to look at who they brought on from the bench to see there's still a chasm in overall ability/depth.

I do fully agree the performance wasn't great, not poor, just not on it enough to beat a very very good team.

It's a bit of a rollercoaster isn't it?

McKenna said don't get too high and don't get too low and I think all of us probably went much higher than we realistically should have.

I don't think they battered us, just had far too much control.

Oh well.

Realistically, we all knew this was how the season would go.

Oh and Brighton were pretty much the strongest they've been squad wise for a while (whilst still missing a couple of players).

City Sunday.

Easy win.

For us to win games in this division we have to be at our best, and hope that the opposition are a bit off. Nearly every team is better than us, which is to be expected and we will need some luck to stay up. If we do, we'll be able to strengthen and develop in to a top flight team, but it will take more than two transfer windows to catch up with the likes of Brighton.

We can change things around and with the right team and tactics. I don't think the opposition will have so much of an easy day when we have Philogene and Delap up front.
Not so much tippy tappy stuff in our half . We need to scare teams in their half. With pace on either wing and options down the middle, it would take pressure off the defence.

I think we need to put in the perfect game to get wins at this level, that's the level

We have improved defensively but certainly struggled really putting the foot down against teams

We really need a striker and a right winger to come in

I was disappointed rather than down.

We have a performance in us to beat most teams (well, maybe not Anfield next week ;-) ), and as much as Brighton was disappointing, and not what I expected, we will also see results like Chelsea again. I hope (and truly believe) we can manage enough surprise wins to balance out the disappointments.
