I want a couple of bookshelves fixed to the wall in Mothers annex.

I could do it but 1/ I don't have time and 2/ I can't be arsed.

Some handyman bloke has quoted me £100*********. Am I out of touch or is that price completely insane?

*********Other people are welcome to quote.

We had a chap put a pair of shelves up in Mrs Zx's study a couple of months back for £50, so it does seem a bit steep based on a sample size of one.

I'm awaiting the follow up thread on your "can't be arsed" comment.

Is that price for just fixing existing bookshelves to the wall??? I.e. not supply materials

You don't need materials to fix a bookshelf to a wall.

Why is this so difficult?

This country!

True enough. Bookshelves use air hooks.

That's about half a day, at approximate current rates. Which is considerably longer than it should take to fit shelves on a wall (assuming they don't have to make the shelves from scratch).

I can’t believe people pay someone else to put a shelf up.

Does he change lightbulbs as well?

Can’t be arsed to do it, moaning about paying someone who can be.

Time to set up a GoFundMe page in lieu of the other tricky jobs that need attention?

Cat litter tray full.

Tyre a bit flat on the Merc.

Couple of leaves stuck in the hot tub filter.

Batteries packing up in the tv remote.

Modern Britain innit. No wonder we can’t find anyone to pick our strawberries.

Ok. The things you need to take into account (as a self employed tradesperson myself) is that rates will always be inflated by costs that employed people usually don't have to consider.

During the course of a year, a self-employed tradesperson won't get sick pay or holiday pay, so you do have to take a modest surcharge for those as par for the course.

However, the key is to evaluate the skill level of the task. Gas engineer? Gone to Uni, learned a trade, has a student loan. Handyman? May be skilled, but anyone with half a brain can fit a shelf. In my opinion , that kind of basic task shouldn't be charging more than £20 per hour plus materials. I'd be charging a full day rate of £150 these days.

Without knowing any specific details or potential complications, fitting two shelves shouldn't take more than three hours, absolute max (factors such as wall type, position, number of fixings do factor in). So do the maths, and don't be conned.

My caveat, though, is to say that I never had any official training for painting and decorating. I didn't put myself through any courses to learn. I taught myself, and my ethic is to treat every job like I am in my own home. The standard I want in my own home, I transfer to my jobs.

Handyman quotes are always based on the handyman appearance checklist.
For example, if the homeowner has a big house, check, increase quote by £200. If they have a new'ish car, check, increase quote by £70. Is the homeowner wearing a football, check, if they can afford a football shirt, they're worth a few bob increase by £50. Is there a young single female in the house, check, decrease quote by £20.

Typical bloody Tory - can't be bothered to do something for themselves and begrudges a common man earning a crust!

Joking apart - lets say it's 1/2 day for the job (including travel from his place/other job to your home) that would give him a daily/week income of £200/£1000pw. Out of that he's got to cover transport costs (petrol, van insurance, tax, maintenance/mot etc), tools upkeep/replacement, cost of fixings, insurance.

Doesn't sound to bad to me?

Bit different if it was a mate/neighbour who might well do it for a couple of pints etc - you are looking for someone competent and reliable and they're entitled to earn a living?
