Standard stuff really , drag it through the courts, probably getting legal aid all at tax payers expense.

...was the bloke that escaped from prison, got caught, got charged with escaping from prison and then pleaded not guilty to escaping from prison.

Even he realised he was gonna struggle to deny it and changed his plea at the last minute.

Let's just wring extra pence out of the taxpayers' fund for 'gits and shiggles', hey?

I imagine they were asked to enter their plea and they said "not guilty".

Would you rather people didn’t have a right to plead not guilty when brought to trial or just shocked by the cheek of it? From the title it looks like the former, as the question about ‘how’ is simply that the process allows for them to do that. Is that what you’ve got a problem with?

You've used the wrong question... if you'd asked "why?" It would be a bit clearer. The opportunity for this to go to court, brings it back into the public eye, which gives them more excuse to bring up the police violence against them that followed the assault. If they just admit it, they quietly get sentenced, and everything else is viewed through the lens of their guilt, whereas until then, they feel that they can keep playing on the victim line....

I'd imagine that they've seen that absolutely nothing appears to have happened to the officer who used one of their heads for penalty-taking practice and feel, based on that, that they've got a decent chance of acquittal.

They'll be on a hiding to nothing regardless, though. Those officers will have made sure that their statements are absolutely water-tight.

As the whole Sam Kerr debacle has proven - if you're a police officer and can't make a charge stick, you can just amend your statement until the CPS likes what you've written.

What is it, precisely, about them that leads you to be so sure that they're claiming legal aid?

Do you think the police wouldn't have given them a kicking if they were white? That's quite a strong accusation, mate.

As in the white police officers being cleared and the Asian bods charged?

I make no value judgement on the above, but what you're saying doesn't make sense boss.

Edit: its so out, maybe I've misunderstood!? I stand to be corrected.

Do you think if they were white they wouldn't have been charged? Or that they'd have been charged but the law would have been changed so they couldn't plead not guilty? I'm struggling with this one.

That's not an answer, champ, so I'll ask again:

What, precisely, is it about the defendants that makes you so certain that they're claiming legal aid?

Ah, is this the one where the officer was stamping on his head while the guy was on the floor? I suspect you’re right. There was a whole bunch of wrongs in that incident. Obviously they’ve got enough to think it worth prosecuting these two herbets. Did anything ever progress against the officer?

I had a bit of a search and, whilst there are a few articles about the officer having been suspended around the time of the incident, there seems to have been radio silence since.

I don't know how long these investigations tend to take, but the silence seems pretty damning.
