Is it time for George Hirst? 13:47 - Feb 23 with 3607 views | Garv | It's unlikely to result in a huge change in fortunes but it might make us a better attacking unit and help us create better chances instead of relying on Delap trying to do (almost) everything on his own, and aside from anything else he probably deserves it. We've persisted with Delap - why wouldn't we have done? But it's not brought us results. Hirst has done admirably whenever he's had the opportunity, which hasn't been very often, partly due to fitness.

I think Hirst will get his chance again next season, get the most out of Delap before he inevitably leaves in the summer.

Why? That leaves us with no striker on the bench and means either changing formation to go two up top or moving Delap to a position he's yet to play for us when he's been very effective up front.

We’ve won 3 in 26. Maybe try something different?

May as well put Muric up front then if all you want is different and not logical
Is it time for George Hirst? on 14:14 - Feb 23 with 2548 views | Churchman | Hirst brings other players into the game. In some ways he is a better player than Delap as of now as that’s an area of his game Delap is still to learn. Watching the best teams, they know when to keep and when to release the ball. However, Delap has size and is able to bully PL defenders and is going to be a top Centre Forward, probably for England too. But I’d try Hirst if his fitness allows it. Can’t think of a reason why not. It might be worth trying them together too. I think they’ll occupy the same space, but you never know. Hirst is a clever player | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'm not sure sticking two men up front and having no centre forward on the bench is the kind of different that's likely to help us.

I was thinking Delap wide right and Hirst in middle. It doesn’t really matter as it’s not going to happen!

Though keeping a striker on the bench has hardly been successful for us this season. Speaking in general, have we really got to the point where we advocating dropping one of very few players who has looked at Premier League standard more often than not? [Post edited 23 Feb 14:34]

He could score a goal a game for the rest of the season and we're still likely to lose the majority of them. Just because he's performing well it doesn't mean the team is. Delap almost guarantees you 45 minutes of full throttle effort and goal threat every game, why not try giving him the chance to do that at the end of the game instead of the start? I know it's not the done thing but McKenna would be entitled to simply bring him on at half time if he wanted.

Is this a real thread? Our best player, our best goal threat, an absolute pest to centre half’s, who has pace and power and puts in a shift… Should be dropped ?? Bizarre !!

People have different opinions shocker. I wouldn't drop Delap, but agree with giving Hirst a go up top.

But then when they are both goosed after 70 minutes, who comes on up front? I think if we saw Delap as a genuine option on the right, we'd have gone all out for another number 9 in January to give us that option.

Yes. He's developing just like the other young players. It's well and good bashing people out the way and if he scores Great game. When he doesn't he's not bringing others into the game he's not pressing with what I call hirst mindset where he directs you to where he wants you to. He's an absolute beast of a battering ram. But that's all he is currently. Why when we've seen 35 plus different players playing or what ever it is. Can't we see what hirst does with a run.

Golly. We know how good Hirst is: and he's nowhere near as good as Delap. I like Hirst, and yes, good team player, but he isn't in the same league in terms of pace and power. Delap - even yesterday, not his best game... he nearly scored in the first minute, hit the woodwork with a header, bullies and harasses... He's not the issue. Arguably he's our only player who would get into a top 12 PL team.

The more goals and spotlight delap gets, the more he sells for , the more we can keep other players. Makes no sense to not play him. We got promoted without him and now have, supposedly far superior players although not really noticed however watching us against Coventry makes me positive for next season of coming back up with a team that will know each other and that will not need mass replacements next time round

But no one is asking hirst to have the same power and pace. Which btw is slightly wrong on the pace anyway he's somehow rapid this season. But hirst knows how to work with those around him. Even KM spoke of delap and how he has to understand how to play with different players... I just find it off if you're gonna develop youngsters all over the pitch and that sometimes includes some bench time. Do the same with delap. It doesn't mean delaps done wrong. Not all. It's not saying he's poor not even close. Its just he's on his own development path and I'm surprised we've relied so heavily on someone so young this season. You mentioned that first 3 minutes. Completely agree. But what did we get after that? Alot of freekicks the other way. Some simple passes ignored whilst he tried to take on 3 spurs players with a roundabout turn on the ball and he lost it.. I honestly can't say I noticed delap outside those opening moments other than being a battering ram. And that's why I would like to see hirst to see if it changes anything. [Post edited 23 Feb 15:35]
