Mckenna saying hes staying 12:05 - Apr 12 with 2816 viewskeanekipper

While i hope its more than just words, its easy for him to say this at the minute as there are no offers on the table. I refuse to take the statement as anything other than just words and the reason for that is i dont think my heart could take it if he leaves this summer after fully buying into what he said.

sorry to be a debbie downer but it comes from a place of loving the man too much

I think you are spot on. Of course he is staying because he hasn't been given any alternative.

I think the key message is that he is happy here as is his family and they are settled. He certainly isn't about to jump at the first offer made (but we knew that already from previous offers made). However, there is always the potential for an offer that turns his head and that doesn't have to be within a transfer window like it does with a player.

At least it shows that he’s happy at the club, which to me suggests things are well run. I have confidence that we’d make a decent appointment if/when he goes - not another journeyman dinosaur.

He has to say he is staying, he is possibly following a 3 line whip currently on how to respond to such questions

1. We are still in season and fighting (a lost cause ...)
2. Season ticket sales
3. Player retention
4. Possibly no other offers currently
5. It generally looks very disloyal to say anything else

I know people will say he could have dodged the question, but I think for points 2 and 3 the club won't want him to totally dodge the question.

Given last summer and what we believe to be triggered by his agents, I won't allow myself to think this is total commitment as the OP has said.

It definitely doesn’t provide any guarantee that he’ll be here next season. However, he’s a clever guy and chooses his words carefully and will be aware that a statement like that could come back to bite him and make him look disloyal (not that that would be enough to stop him from moving on if the offer was right for him). He could have just as easily have said that his full focus is on this season and he’s not looking too far ahead etc. if he was looking for a way out

McKenna may well be wishing that he had joined Brighton ins the summer - an established PL club with a good overseas player recruitment network. The sort of club where an ambitious young coach like McKenna feels he could really make his mark. Instead, he stuck at Town, where he hasn't been a flop & has had to deal with a below par squad, but he hasn't really enhanced his reputation either. His next move will be a big one as far as his career is concerned & bringing Town back up won't hugely advance his CV, while if we flounder next season, he may have missed his chance of a big job.

He’ll be off at the first offer he gets from a PL club.

My hope is that it happens early in the summer, so we have time to bring in a new man and hit the ground running

Yep I think you are right.

If an offer like Palace, Brentford came in, I think he would go and I wouldn't blame him if he did as much as I love the guy. There were people in here last summer saying "Why would he want to go to Brighton" I think we have seen why. So would make sense if he wanted a crack at the Prem with a stronger squad.

It could very easily be taken as a moment in time comment but given what has happened and what is to come he advisors will have war games a number of scenarios and will know what’s most like to come up this summer. With that in mind, he doesn’t need to go as far as he did, it’s full tilt planning for me: message to current players thinking of leaving, message to future players we are starting to be interested in for this summer, message to fans we are going to be roaring in Aug. Waka waka.

He has a massive contract with us. He's not going to say he's annoyed and wants to leave, is he?

I think he'll be off at the first sign of a prem offer but good luck to him.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Yeah I’ve no issue with it.

I will have though if it’s dragged out all summer, or done with 3/4 weeks to go.

He won’t be off at the first offer as he’s under contract . Unless the contract has an escape clause which I don’t believe would do as that would show he wasn’t confident of staying up when he signed a multi million pound contract at the start of the season. He will stay as no big clubs will want him and going to another lower club fighting for possible relegation would be worse for his career than staying at town to fight for another promotion and still get paid a lot compared to most managers In the world.

He wasn't off at the first 2 prem offers last season so why do you think he will be next season?

I am sure he would leave if he felt the overall offer was better than what he has here but he has already decided that wasn't the case with 2 established Premier League sides.

His stock was high last season and we gave him a massive contract.

He perhaps didn't have the confidence to take a massive job as he's self aware enough to know he lacked managerial experience at the top level.

He's defo going when someone half decent sniffs around him.

Downside scenario now is that if we struggle in the championship and his stock drops further.

Pointing out the obvious ... he has a settled family and joining Everton or Wolves for 3 months before being sacked after not getting them higher than mid table probably wouldn't appeal to someone who is more interested in building a reputation as a top manager somewhere where he knows he will be backed and supported.

I think he is a very astute man and that is part of why he is such a good manager. I am sure he recognises that he is in a very good job and can wait for something that is definitely better to come along. I don't get any vibes that he lacks confidence in his own ability.

He will definitely go when he gets a better offer but I don't see that as him jumping at the chance of a basket case in the lower Premier League.

He is very astute. So astute that he'll always remember it's a results business and our board will expect promotion next year.

If a safely mid table prem club comes along during a managerial merry go round period I think it's objectively less risky to leave.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Maybe he has a clause, maybe he doesn’t. For managers they are uncommon - the club wanting to recruit them usually just buy out their contract, which can be done at any time (unlike with players).

If he gets interest, wants to leave and the enquiring club is willing to buy out his contract, he’ll be off. As others say though, he’s an astute man so knows the risks of moving to a cut-throat bigger club, and had a young, settled family.

He’ll think very hard before risking that upheaval. I can assure you that in high-flying jobs, there is always an element of balancing quality of life with pure financial gain.
