Young and Greaves can cover. Albeit Greaves would change our structure in a far more dramatic way.

I think it's a pretty specialist position that LB/LWB role. Would have to be a complete tactical rethink if you played those two in the role. Neither are much of a threat to get in behind. IMO Time to start planning properly for either life without Leif or a viable alternative to compete with him if we manage to get back up. With Townsend out of contract next season, we would have had to do it then. This just moves that forward a year.

The idea that Ashley Young isn't a good enough Back-up Wing Back for a team in the Championship is mind-blowing to me! He knows the position inside-out, and has played it for many different managers with different tactics and systems.

If Greaves drops in, I don't think we'd ask him to play as a wing back like Davis so he'd be more defensively minded traditional left back. It's something he's done before at Hull for half a season. Not a like for like replacement, but serviceable with some change in the team. The idea that Ashley Young couldn't play as a left wing back and wouldn't have much threat seems bizarre. He's played there for Man Utd, Inter Milan and England for crying out loud! He is absolutely specialist enough for the job!

Of course he could play it but he's 40, is right footed and has played predominately as a right back over the course of the last few seasons! In my opinion It would be a tough ask to ask him to play in the same way as Leif if he was out for any sustained period of time. You're replacing historically our top assister. Would you be happy with him starting as LB for the entire season? Same with Greaves? If the answer to that is no then we need better cover. [Post edited 11 Aug 8:35]

I don't think he particularly rejected the club, he rejected the fact that we was in the Championship. But given how Rob Edwards said 2 weeks ago on their local radio that the ball was in Hackney's court, and that by the time the Swansea game had come around for them this weekend just gone, they'd have 2-3 more players in the door - they ended up only signing 1, which was going through the process anyway. They missed out on a £8m midfielder after Hackney rejected us, as Lyon swooped in last minute (Pavel Sulc, not Tyler Morton). Still think he comes here personally, their summer signings depend on him going.

He is fully able to play either side and is just as natural on either. There is absolutely zero doubt he could play an attacking left wing back role. Would he have the same engine as Davis? No, but Townsend didn't either. Whatever option we end with is sub optimal compared to Leif, but we have options such that I'd rather we focus on central midfield than here.

John Wark could have played any of those positions to a higher standard than any of our current players play their primary positions. Like you say, quite some player! Matt Holland filled in at Right Back during a game in the Championship, once, due to an injury. He absolutely Rolls-Royced it!

But it does not have to be sub optimal! That's my point. What's happened to Townsend is a real real shame because he's out of contract next summer and likely won't play this season. Therefore we are in a situation where we are just a year ahead of schedule in terms of recruiting a replacement. Why not go and get a specialist LB who can provide cover for Leif but also real competition if everything goes to plan and we go up next year. We have enough resources that we don't need to neglect one position in favour of others.
