Harry Potter.... 13:29 - Aug 12 with 1178 viewsitfcjoe

...my eldest has got really into it lately and about half way through the last book.

It's his birthday in October so looking at some things around HP - any recommendations for things that aren't the stage show and the studio tour. - i.e. anything obvious me and my wife aren't aware of as muggles....

Also if anyone has seen stage show, or been to studio and has bad reviews be happy to hear as assuming that is what we end up doing so need to manage expectations!

If you’re in London there’s loads of rip off shops as well as the office one on the station platform. He can go get a picture there. Mines the same - so it might be worth seeing if you can do a day visiting locations and combining it with other stuff in the capital.

The tour is worth it if you have watched the movies. The books are slightly different to what was used as movie props, however i would let the imagination run wild if he has only read the books and you'll have a great (expensive) time there

The show is split in two
very dark and based on Harrys son 19 years later..... it is an amazing show but no real reference to the books if thats what you are after

Studio tour is really good, well worth a visit.

He’ll go there with the school at some point (as it’s something they seem to do yearly) but might still be worth doing now as they don’t really seem to be there for a huge amount of time (after travelling down/traffic/getting back etc)

We’ll be good again... one day

The studio tour is incredible, I don’t see how any fan wouldn’t enjoy that, highly recommend.

The show is wasn’t crazy on but for a youngster I’m sure they’ll love it, the effects and staging is very good but the story pretty so so. Presume you’ve seen it’s in two parts so it can be a long day.

Regret to inform you Harry Potter has been cancelled due to the Wrong Think of the hated author and you and your family must report to your nearest Right Think Facility for immediate reeducation.

Has he just read the books or seen the films? A few filming locations in London to visit. Alnwick castle if you do Middlesbrough away or we get Newcastle/Sunderland away in a cup. Feel the studio tour maybe the best bet though.

He's done both, but has finished the book first before watching the movie so is yet to watch the last 2 as still finishing Deathly Hallows.

We were in London at the weekend so took him to an excellent shop in Soho which has all the graphic design etc

Minalima?

Thats a great shop, their version of the first 3 books are excellent, if a little expensive.

Unfortunately the publisher decided to bin them off and use another company for the 4th book (coming out in October) despite Minalima being the actual graphic designers from the films.

Probably works out much cheaper for the publishers now and then all the people who have started buying that collection will need to buy the rest to finish it off.

Yep, that's the one - I looked at the books and were very nice - he has the first 5 books in the large illustrated hardback editions but the last 2 aren't out yet

I hadn't realised they were using someone else for the next book, that's a shame - think it's very easy to spend a lot of money collecting bits!

If you want something a little different (and like London), you could plan a "Harry Potter sights of London" tour; Goodwin Court is Knockturn Alley, there's one which is Grimmauld Place and there are a variety of other locations used from the movies. There are a variety of itineraries and maps available online.

The Studio Tour is incredible - for both adults and kids. I did it about 12 years ago, and then again over Christmas just gone. I have also seen the stage show, and didn't enjoy it, despite being very fond of Harry Potter. It's very expensive as it's split into two Acts, and that's a lot of theatre in one day!

Might be a touch dry for a child, not sure how old, but there's some excellent Harry Potter walking tours in Edinburgh. Much of it was inspired in the city, they take you through the church yard / grave stones for example from which a lot of the character names were drawn from and you have to go around finding them. Some of them even go to the Jacobite Steam Train (basis of the Hogwarts Express) and into the Highlands and links to the stories.

I'd say they're more cultural experiences than pure Potter though, I'm not really a Potter fan but did it with wife and brother-in-law & sister in law who were all in to the books as kids. It was also after about 6 pints and I never need much convincing for a weekend on the p1ss in Edinburgh tbh.

As I say perhaps a bit dry if you're talking younger kids who want to wave a wand around.

Head to Goathland and not only can you see the station where they filmed you can also have a pint at the Aidensfield Arms!

I did the studio tour last December with my Godsons and quite enjoyed it despite not being a huge fan of the films. There were a few nice seasonal touches as well so felt like a good time of year to visit.

Could you dress up as Hagrid for the day? You have the base of the beard but with a few months to go it could be full Hagrid by his bday. Get a consume ordered and work on your acting and he will have his own Hagrid.
