“We know connections are not fully formed yet and we have to work on it. We have to work on it with the players who played today and with the new players coming in”

Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but it sounds like at least a couple of signings are done or close to it? Especially as all the new players played bar Kipre and Button.

It's not a secret that we still need reinforcements. I have always said we have to judge at the end of the window but I think we can all agree we still need two more minimum without any outgoings so suspect he is just referring to anyone who comes in rather than specific players.

That said, McAteer was done very quickly so who knows?

We need not only signings, but those to be starters.

And, he won’t be the first player to miss, but £12m and he’s missed the target today. I’m convinced if that’s a £300k signing in our last championship campaign that hit hits the back of the net.

McAteer for £12 million obviously it would be quick. Top and Rudkin would have driven him to PR themselves.

Look at all the Leicester fans laughing on their forum, makes our £10 million Broady sale to Wrexham pale in comparison.

Do we? New signings are lovely. They give a dopamine hit. But, if we fail to get anyone in, are we really saying this squad is incapable of a promotion hunt? Because, considering his the majority of these players have performed at this level for other teams, it should be more than capable. Especially when you consider other squads throughout the division, including Preston today.

Squad as it stands isn't good enough no.
It would compete. But it's massively missing creativity

Let's not forget our promotion season... Davis effect on left. Set pieces brought chances too.
We had broadhead creating. Burgess creating goals for hirst. Burns drilling balls across the box.
Late on hutch tucking in and hitting shots off.

The biggest problem we have is we have a host of fantastic indivuals in the top part of the pitch. But they all played with 3 4 other players who worked with them
Together for us they are all just individuals missing the elements that actually made them targets in the first place.

Sammy S didn't need to be a creator he was a scorer
Clarke didn't need to defend or relearn how to play on the right he just turned in and scored but had movement all around him moving defenders out of his path
Etc etc

It's not imo a well balanced squad. But we have 1 week to go.

Then a lot of money had been spent to create an unbalanced squad. And more has to be spent to re-balance it. That's not a sign of good recruitment.

After 10 games we will be in the play offs. After 20 we will be in automatics.

Some people seem determined to make a small issue (right now) into a mountain.

Personally I think the recruitment has been absolutely sht the last 18 months

But we've had this with previous owners

When Burley had cash we blew it
When Keane had cash we blew it
KM gets cash we blew it

Cook is the only manager in the past 20 years who recruited excellently and that was mainly players he already knew.

Yes and no, Burnley lost two games all of last season and had lost a hell of a lot of players, we’ve barely had a shot on target from open play.

There’s absolutely justified concerns to the start of this season with 2 points out of 9. I’m not worried but I’ve been underwhelmed by Ashton more than anything for a while, our strategy seems a bit all over the place.

Steady on there Frimmers, I think you're lapsing badly on a number of Paul Cook's signings, like Rakeem Harper, Kyle Edwards, Matt Penney, Scott Fraser & Joe Piggott.

Lol true. May have gone a tad ott there. But he did bring in a large amount of those who helped us to the two promotions.

Km of course hsd done aswell. Davis. Broady etc

But when that next war chest became available. We've seen Incredible numbers spent on players that don't fit what we need.

Not sure I can get behind you on this post Frimmers.

Before we start on the previous managers, I don't think our recruitment has been sh1t over the past 18 months. If it had been we wouldn't have banked nearly £40m!

For me the issue is once you get relegated from the EPL every club is likely to lose key talent such as Delap and Hutch. Then you have other angles where players are super aware the squad is evolving and leaving you behind, the exact same thinking that a) caused one of our GK's to pack in pro footie and b) players being comfortable at a EFL level and knowing if promoted they would be offski.

Now to your previous owners comment which is actually focus on the managers:

Burley did an amazing job for us full stop. Yes we signed some players who we struggled to integrate, but I don't accept we had tonnes of cash and blew it.

When ME took over iirc there was 30m to spend on players, the big mistake was bringing Keane in as manager who had got Sunderland promoted essentially based off the previous managers squad. Would you let Keane recruit players? This was completely an owner issue letting the manager do all the recruiting.

KM gets cash we blew it - Lazy take imho, as per above some of our key talent has had their heads turned by the big boys and some of it out of our control? (i.e. release clauses) Yet this recruitment has led us to be in a very strong position financially.

Lest I remind you, Leicester are in big trouble and expecting more of their top talent heading elsewhere as is the same for Saints.

I'm sure others will pull you up on the Cook comment, yes he brought in some key players but also chucked others into the bin that McK brought back into the fold.

However, as you brought up Cook I do think currently we are in a similar situation in getting the squad to "gel" which led to Cookies demise.

On your final paragraph, the start to this season feels very much like the start of 22/23. A lot of hope, before seeing a bunch of individuals on the pitch with little to no cohesion.

Agreed, but I have utmost faith in McKenna getting things worked out tactically/formation no matter what happens recruitment wise.

Let's see how we fare once the transfer window closes, the other relegated clubs from the EPL will be doing the same. While a negative that our key talent has jumped ship, maybe it is a positive they have done so with the window still open.

Anyway you cut it, now is not the time to be throwing the proverbial baby out with the bath water.
