MAGA sentiment means right wing populism, conspiracy theory leaning, being led by wealthy self interest charlatans, nostalgic nationalism, white nationalism sympathies, eschewing science and expertise in governance. Net zero negativity.
Don’t get me wrong not all people who support Trump or vote republican are MAGA. And the democrats made a complete hash of leaning too left and a shambolic response to Trump.
And it’s wrong to state that every policy or Trump’s has been negative. He has done some things that have challenged failings in the status quo.
But what is now happening in the US is shocking. If you aren’t up to speed on what Trump is doing at the federal level take the time to research, news reporting in the UK is relatively light on what for example is happening in government departments and education. Kennedy’s actions alone in research and healthcare are deranged. The zone is so flooded people are dizzy to the change. His support Netanyahu and Putin is staggering.
I thought when the liar in chief Boris was removed and Trump lost the election (republican voting officials have testified he lost, and yet he’s trying to have school curriculums changed to relevant his view - one of a 1000 insanity points). That Farage will skulk back into his hate hole after the Brexit debacle.
But social media and client journalism is a powerful thing.
And now we see the rise of flag waving, of immigration hate, of nationalism, of AI powered Farage memes, of UK people pining for Trumpian rule, of Reform saying they will frack… etc etc
It’s MEGA and it is coming, combined with the Starmer hate campaign (he deserves massive criticism, but he’s also done much right) before we know it we’ll have damaging people in charge. Badenoch is a disgrace, dancing to the hate whistle.
I just hope the British public can see through the rhetoric.
And in the background AI rises.
What a time to be alive.
Still the sun is shining, and we have our Town (well sort of)
Feels like we’re on brink of a lot of chickens coming home to roost and can imagine various dystopian scenarios playing out.
For me the most concerning thing is how so much these days is driven by hate. I think the digital culture enables that - it was harder to be offensive and spiteful when you had to do it in person and there could be consequences.
On a related note I find that it’s pretty obvious the right are really skilled in harnessing narratives. Fair play to them. Woke used to be about caring about people I thought. Now that’s an insult…utter woke nonsense.
And this raise the colours thing. Now the right have claimed exclusive ownership of patriotism. It’s not exactly exclusive to the right to be patriotic. In other liberal and more socialist countries than here people routinely fly their national flags. Why does the left just vacate any space the right wants to assume control of?
Surely a left wing liberal socialist can he patriotic too. I’d certainly appreciate the flag painted with more care and neatly on my mini roundabout.
For me the left has to do much better.

Starmer and the Labour right are going to usher in Farage as PM and fascism. That was clear 2-3 years ago.
The Labour right and the liberals who destroyed the anti austerity movement under Corbyn through outrageously cynical and immoral AS smears are going to have to own it.
This combined with the People's Vote brigade has led us to this point.
I remember Corbyn saying true patriotism in 2019 was investing in our services, taking care of each other etc. The last chance and destroyed by the 'Rest Is Politics Rory Stewart is a good guy really, isn't Marina Hyde funny' brigade. While they were busy taking Brexit personally, choking on lattes and living in leafy bubbles, the country was falling apart.
Added to this the rise in petit bourgeoise values (read Dan Evans on this - excellent) and you can see why Reform will win a huge majority.

Starmer should fight back by getting rid of Reeves and getting someone who knows what they are doing who has other answers than wondering which tax they can increase next.

Economic hardship always seems to be the main cause behind the rise of the far right, every time. In our case, its 14 years of disastrous Tory rule that brought us here and if you want to apportion blame, I'd look at Corbyn's disastrous electoral showings as something that enabled that run. Corbyn also of course failed to lead the Remainer cause.
Starmer's lot have had one year in power - seems harsh to blame them.

Unfortunately though even if the current government made people’s lives better there would be an effective campaign by the right to persuade them their lives are worse. You have to consider that it doesn’t matter what’s real any more. Facts do not matter.
I’m not persuaded this government has made people’s lives better yet but even if it does it needs to become much more effective at communicating or it won’t make a difference to the direction of travel.

Right wing answers to things are normally simpler sadly, they're almost always the wrong thing to do but very easy to convey in a 30 second video clip
Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

I actually disagree with this.
I think Labour moving right has squeezed the ground for the Conservatives and pushed them right. It has decreased the ground for the likes of Farage.
Much as my own political views are more to the left (mostly), if Labour had moved left, the Conservatives would have had a lot more ground to win the last election and left a lot more ground for Farage and co to work. Off the back of yet another shambolic and painful Conservative term I would imagine Reform etc would have had a field day.
The big shame is that so much of the electorate appears to be so far to the right.

What I find ironic is Labour’s election slogan “ time for change” worked to Reforms advantage. People who agreed it was time for change but by moving to the right rather than the left.
Meanwhile Starmer has moved Labour to the right and risks losing votes to Greens or the new party of the left.
Agsin Farage looks like being the beneficiary.
Starmer is destroying the socialist movement while Conservative Party becomes an irrelevantance.

Difficult times ahead.
Green and LibDem always did split the left of centre vote. It is the existence of parties on the right that has split the Conservative vote in a way it usually isn't.

That’s a great post.
I agree Woke is in principle a great movement. The left kind of messed it up with how far the trans movement went. But the way the right have demonised it, says so much.
Everything is too polarised, left and right, anger anger.
There is no crossing the aisle in American politics, just two camps shouting at each other. Same goes for the media. We are, will go the same way. Farage, GB News, The Guardian’s lurch from centre left.
The colours thing is bang on. Britain strengths’s are creativity, humour, multiculturalism, sense of fair play, politeness, self-deprecation - I don’t recognise those things in this urge to use the Union Jack or cross of St George to harp back to some pre WW2 false nostalgia.
There are very valid reasons to protest outside an asylum hotel, but to do it coked/stellaed up wrapped in St George’s flag fire up by social media ain’t one of them.

'There are very valid reasons to protest outside an asylum hotel' are there really or are they directing their frustrations at the wrong people?

“You tell them a lie, and then when you don't need it any more you tell them another lie and tell them they're progressing along the road to wisdom. Then instead of laughing they follow you even more, hoping that at the heart of all the lies they'll find the truth. And bit by bit they accept the unacceptable. Amazing.”
When Terry Pratchett (RIP) speaks more sense than any actual politician you know we're farked.
The Democracy for Sale team have recently released an interview discussing the Christian Nationalist influence from the US. It’s only a part of what you’re talking about here, but might be of interest to some. Disclaimer: I’ve not found time to watch it yet, but they normally do a decent investigative job on stuff.

Whether Corbyn presented the message in a sensible way or not, the principles behind his policy are, frankly, the only principles which can save us now from societal breakdown in a 'me'-obsessed, imbalanced, fat, consume-all-you-can, culture of rabid, aggressive, capitalist ideals which are coming up against so many immovable boundaries now.
It's utter madness to carry on down this 'growth is God' route when there's no social, economic or environmental space left to 'grow' into. Surely everyone can see that, at least on some level?

Look I’m a left of centre person.
But we have a problem with illegal immigration and the processing and/or integration into our values of predominantly male economic immigrants. The sexual crime rates are a too stark to ignore.
I agree protesting outside a hotel where immigrants are being held is aiming anger and protest at the wrong place and institution.
I also don’t think it’s right to demonise everyone protesting outside these hotels, some are local with legitimate concerns.
But many are fired up by the Farage, Robinson and increasingly Badenoch wolf whistle. And they’re there to basically make a far right statement. You can dress it up as much as you like.
Of course nothing is as simplistic as you say as these bad actors would make you out, much of this immigration is caused by US and UK foreign policy, much of it is caused by the disastrous immigration policies post Brexit, rushed through. And so on and so on.
The Tories parroting that Rwanda would have solved this is reductionist clap trap, but reductionist clap trap can get a narcissistic crook into the White House!

I’ll have a watch.
I was going to mention that the form of MAGA we will have over hear won’t at its core have Christian nationalism (cause we’re a bunch of atheists), nor gun rights, nor pro-Russian (Tucker Carlson has much to answer for) at its core.
But it will have a hatred of the left, bile spewing opinion journalists, and potentially net zero running through it (ULEZ and Sadiq Kahn demonisation)

Yes, I can’t imagine us exactly replicating the hardcore Christian nationalism either. The money is already flowing this way though, which is a worry. I can easily imagine a future where a continuing spineless Starmer government or a Farage government is prepared to undermine women’s rights (they seem to be the main victims in the US) in exchange for cash/support. Even if they don’t go as far.

Nope, sorry - that won't stick this time.
Who has moved the country further to the right? Who has got into bed with BlackRock etc? Who has lied? Who has reduced the membership of the Labour party to the point where it is almost extinct? Who is going to lead us to Labour polling 15% or lower in a general election? Who has no principles?
Not Corbyn but Starmer, Mcsweeney and co.
Corbyn won more votes in 2017 and 2019 than Starmer's false landslide.
Time for those who thought he was forensic to own it.

Sorry but imo Labour have legitimised a lot of hard right rhetoric and so they've given Farage ground not taken it.
Flags and crackdowns is all they had and why would you vote for the fake version when you can have the real thing in Farage?
If you were Farage, there's nothing that Labour have done that you wouldn't want them to do.
The Starmer project (Mcsweeney) = handmaidens of the far right.

I've got a lot of sympathy for what you say mr Nth. I don't have a clue as to which party (or version of) can make that argument successfully in an election though. Its all fairly bleak right now, but maybe an answer will become clear down the line?
